Globes fashion: Beauties and beasts
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.
If certain actors and actresses strolling the red carpet during the Golden Globes Monday night find themselves in the fashion penalty box from now until Oscar night, they have only themselves to blame.
On the other hand, some could spend the rest of the year in hiding — they’ve already cemented images of near-perfection in our minds.
Here are our picks for best and worst of the Golden Globes.
BEST
A. Scott Walton
Natalie Portman, wearing vintage Chanel, displayed a down-to-earth, other-worldly beauty not seen since the heyday of Audrey Hepburn.
Renee Zellweger, who, with a flash of her newly sculpted legs beneath scant layers of sheer chiffon gave us a new interpretation of what lies beneath.
Charlize Theron, in a Dior creation by John Galliano, left little to the imagination and — much to be desired.
Marylin Johnson
Anne Hathaway’s one-shouldered navy dress by Marc Jacobs was short, sweet and of the moment. Her best accessory? Red lipstick
Keira Knightley looked sleek in Valentino?s strapless white sheath, which she wore with great aplomb.
Geena Davis proved that old fashioned can be stunning — in Escada?s full-skirted red satin ball gown with a jeweled bodice.
Morieka Johnson
Natalie Portman proved that short can indeed be chic. Her classic haircut and lace Chanel party dress set the perfect tone for the young ingenue.
Felicity Huffman will always be the least desperate of all the housewives on her series. She shows the 20somethings that style is not wasted on the youth.
Terrence Howard was purr-fection.
WORST
A. Scott Walton
Geena Davis, in a randy interpretation of a lipstick red Jessica Rabbit dress that should get whoever suggested it impeached.
Mariah Carey, in a black-and-white paneled satin “spray-on” dress that she said Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld whipped up within minutes. It deserves to be put away wet.
Drew Barrymore, in a green jersey knit sheath that — suffice it to say — super-sized all her attributes and assets for the public?s viewing displeasure.
Marylin Johnson
Mariah Carey — the late designer Coco Chanel is spinning in her grave.
Charlize Theron’s strapless black Dior dress did not flatter the usually stunning actress.
Johnny Depp, because red and black should be reserved for University of Georgia sporting events.
Morieka Johnson
Rosario Dawson dressed for the after parties rather than the actual award show. Her formless coral gown was as flattering as a burlap sack.
Pamela Anderson gets points for effort … but not many.
Scarlett Johansson chose to spray on the dress rather than the tan.

Without a doubt it was Mariah Carey. She is good looking woman who isn’t 20 years old anymore and shouldn’t try to dress like it.

On the other hand, Felicity Huffman worked with what she’s got and looked absolutely fabulous.

How long can a person live on water and a low carb feeding tube? How many size 0’s does Hollywood have? How do they hide the feeding tubes under chiffon? Too many questions, not enough answers. Mariah Carey hot? Surely you jest. She looked like 40 lbs. of trash stuffed in a 25 lb bag. I have seen better knock offs trying to cross Buford Ave in busy traffic. Where was the ever glamourous old Hollywood beauty Halle Berry? She is usally the cats meow, but she was missing this year. Drew Berrymore, get a bra, please, with support. Johnnie Depp, come on, you’re making millions, buy a tie, take a shower and get your wife some teeth whitening strips.

Mariah needs to turn down that second helping of potatoes more often. She has become such a porker lately and also seems to always think that flashy and trashy is sexy. I’ve NEVER seen her dressed in anything classic and classy. Gina Davis, on the other hand, is not 20 anymore either but always tries to look elegant, even when at a post-menopausal age.
I think, however, I’m the only person on the planet that thought Gwenyth (sp?) Paltrow looked terrible, and it had nothing to do with her pregnancy. That dress made her look like she’d come straight to the festivities after running through a windstorm at a TP factory while covered in something sticky.
I also think someone needs to deflate Pam Anderson’s balloons. Does she really not look at herself in the mirror and see the joke she has become? Unfortunately, it gets less and less funny the older she gets. Here’s a visual - Pam Anderson with those same balloon b@@bs at 80, wrinkles and all. :(

I agree Gwyneth looked like she was wearing a frumpy nightgown- she’s been known to wear some awful stuff to award shows. The best dressed person was Hugh Laurie, hands down. That is one hot man- he looked smashing.

Good to know that I’m not alone about Gwyneth (thanks for the spelling help). Just because it was made by Balenciaga does not make it a good dress. Plus, with the way it hiked up in front, it looked like she grabbed a non-pregnancy frock just because she could still fit into it. Pregnancy dresses are longer in front to prevent that.
I agree that Hugh Laurie looked stellar but for my money, Terrance Howard put every guy there to shame, Georgia included. Wow.

Mariah looked like trash! I love her voice, but she dress trashy. She needs to grow up and dress her age. I think she would be much more respected if she did. And Geena Davis did not look good in that red gown - ugh !!!
George Clooney - always the man !!!

You will note, SR, that I said, when referring to Gina D., that she “always TRIES to look elegant…” [emphasis added]. I agree that it was not her best look but she still looked better than Mariah. Does Mariah not use a stylist? Is she so insecure about her sexiness that she has to dress like a 38th & Madison “Ho” to feel sexy? I just don’t get it. She has all the money in the world and dresses like she shops at Goodwill.

Mariah is living proof money does not buy class or good breeding. If she does have a stylist…I mean come on…it would be a stylist Mariah would hire, so she would have to pocess the taste of a hooker. The woman is straight up ghetto.

I think Mariah looked very nice. Stop hating on her. And as far as turning down a helping of potatoes, who said pretty is stick thin. Not me. I would sleep with Mariah before Felicity or Geena (notwithstanding I don’t do white women). Who says because you’re older you have to dress like a old woman. Flaunt what you got I say, she has it, she flaunts it!

Mariah looked like trash. The dress was a hot mess, and I can’t even believe it was a Chanel (by Karl Lagerfeld). Mr. Karl must have forgotten to take his geritol that day because that dress looks like it was slapped together by a high school home-ec student. I wish for once that Mariah would wear a dress that is actually in her size. And the slicked back ‘do with the ringlets looked stupid. If she has a stylist, she needs to fire him/her. If she doesn’t have a stylist, she needs to put in for emergency wardrobe help. She looked like a two dollar crack ‘ho.

I think that Queen Latifah had on a nice dress. She looks good in Blue. That is her color.Terrence Howard is always a number One dresser. And the ladies from “Housewives” always know how to dress. Charlize Theron dress was not that bad. Everyone was dressed nice and so much spirit.

I thought Queen Latifah looked FABULOUS, she gets prettier and sexier each day. Way to go for her to show the world a plus size girl with some curves can own the red carpet.

Wow…just reading most of your comments, life for many of you must be perfect. Only perfect people can strongly criticize others. Please…share your secrets so the rest of us can be perfect like you. I have never understood how “dogging” another person makes one feel better about themselves. Who cares about what these people wear on the red carpet. I guess someone does.

Oh, for heaven’s sake, this is a BLOG Sherlon, Joyce and Denise. Get a grip. If you get that offended by folks talking here, then you have very short fuses. We’re having fun, and YES, it IS at the expense of others. It isn’t like any of us are musing on world peace. I happen to love Mariah as a singer but it irks me that although she was one of the most talented in that room, no one would put her on any pedestal or in the same league with the other talent because she looked so trashy. She always goes for the sex-pot approach and let’s face it, with Pan Anderson in the room, she becomes an also-ran. She wants to act so she needs to dress like she wants to be taken seriously. The only person who ever got away with flaunting her take-no-prisoners attitude in the face of Hollywood was Cher but she COULD act. Mariah, if you saw “Glitter”, can sing. Enough said.

Queen Latifah is stunning. The woman is CLASS. I thought Geena pulled of the Christmas ball gown pretty well. Mariah? Lived up to expectations - pure trash. And Nancy, do you really think Pam Anderson will ever allow a wrinkle to appear? Between the b@@bs and the lips, I wouldn’t want to sit next to her on airplane for fear she would explode with the change in cabin pressure. Pam is the next Joan Rivers / Michael Jackson freak-of-nature plastic surgery overdose… but I will say, at least she was coherent this time.
And yes, it would be nice if Johnny Depp took a shower, a shave and put on a black tie for an event like this — but he’s always been a bit off-center, don’t you think?

okay, leave Johnny Depp out of this. That mine is so fine! I couldn’t figure out if Pam Anderson was wearing a dress, a shawl or a baby sling. I think Reese Witherspoon looked awesome as usual.
