Dollar and sense

creflo.jpg

Dr. Creflo A. Dollar is signing his new book, “8 Steps to Create the Life You Want,” from 6-8 p.m. today at Wal-Mart, 6149 Old National Highway, College Park.

Dollar is a polarizing minister who preaches “propserity theology.” His supporters believe he is lifting them up, teaching them financial responsibility as well as Christianity. His detractors think he’s a con man, getting rich off of poor people.

Here’s what is billed as a “book description” on Amazon.com, which I think means it was written by the publisher:

“Confidence, peace, and abundant life — we all long for these things. In this life-changing book, author and renowned pastor Dr. Creflo A. Dollar challenges readers to stop wishing for a satisfying life. Instead, Dr. Dollar proclaims, we should be claiming the success that God promises today. We do not have to be defined by past failures or mediocrity; we must move forward into the richness available to us right now. God has designed a glorious destiny for each of us, and all we have to do is take hold of it. In order to seize our destiny, each of us must be willing to radically transform our lives. “If you don’t like the way you feel,” says Dollar, “you’ve got to change the way you think.” By taking manageable steps along the way, each of us can achieve life to the fullest — until it overflows.”

On the surface, it’s hard to take issue with those sentiments.

Dollar was in the news in November when he was one of several wealthy televangelists targeted by Sen. Chuck Grassley, whose Senate Finance Committee asked for financial records from Dollar and his church (as well as others, including Bishop Eddie Long). That’s no sign of guilt or innocence, but it sure got a lot of people’s attention.

Can we talk about Dr. Creflo Dollar, and/or his new book, in a spirited way that doesn’t get ugly? It’s worth a try. What do you think of Creflo Dollar and his approach to Christianity?

This is another case where I’ve never read the book.

HOWEVER, I HAVE heard the man speak - I had ZERO better to watch early one Sunday morning.

From a Christian perspective, his ‘prosperity theology’ is just another cult. It has ZERO basis in the Bible.

Christ - nor any of the New Testament saints - NEVER proclaimed earthly riches. All riches are awaiting us in Heaven, according to the NT.

As a matter of fact, Christ and the NT saints proclaimed the exact opposite message:

Because of me, you will be destroyed. You will be tortured, robbed, and killed for my name. All kinds of suffering are coming to those who believe in me, because the world hates me and will hate those who believe in me.

History bears this out. Christ was crucified. At least 6 of the 12 disciples were as well, though in various forms. (One - Andrew, I think - was crucified on an X, another - Peter, I think - was crucified upside down.) Only John lived to an old age, and he did so in an island prison that makes Alcatraz look like a 5 star hotel.

Paul spent more time in jail after his conversion than free, and to the best of my knowledge was killed in Rome.

To preach ‘prosperity theology’ one may as well be Jewish, because you certainly haven’t read the New Testament and you’re still believing the same things that were promised to the Jews. You cannot believe that Christ was God and believe ‘prosperity theology’, because ‘prosperity theology’ makes Christ a liar. If He was a liar, He cannot be God, because God is Truth.

Does it matter? God has a future planned for us alright: a future six feet under pushing up daisies feeding worms and really settling in. The 6000 year old earth is flat like a flatscreen TV cause the reception is better as god watches us. Round CRT screens distort. See where this is going? A new reality TV show called, god wants you dead.

Yes, it’s god wants you dead. Life is merely a test to see if you can be trusted with the power you will have in the afterlife. Satan didn’t rebel against god because he knew he would lose, no sir, Satan thought he could win, and that means that he had enormous power, just like all of us will have.

After death, there is a window of time in which you are vulnerable to be hobbled and handcuffed limiting your power. If god so chooses, you will be limited by these after-death contraptions and your evil soul will not be able to ruin everything or compete for space with the good souls, who passed the test of life.

To pass the test of life you must always pray for others, not yourself, and really mean it. If you have talents, then give them away to the disenfranchised. Lift up the people you consider the scum of the earth: THAT will impress god, trust me.

Ever see the cool expensive enclaves of graves in the better part of the cemetary? That should cool you off real fast. Oh, I’m so impressed with your grave, sir! I’m going to stick my head in the toilet cause I’m not worthy.

FOOLS!

Anyone know if he’s going to pay taxes on this one - or is this part of his ministry too?

Givemeabreak- He probably won’t pay taxes as the $$ will more than likely go to one of those tax-exempt ministries that he’s established and not to him personally. By having the $$ directed to the ministry, he can, at his leisure, dip his hands into the bucket and pull out as much cash as needed

Jeff got it right this time, there’s not much more to say. I used to live in Knoxville, where there was a huge billboard for an “evangelist” that said the Bible guarantees believers health, wealth, and eternal life. The truth is, it only guarantees one of those. Jesus himself said that his followers had to be willing to give up everything, and would suffer in his name.

WOW Thanks so much. Now that I see how much christians argue with other christians I might as well stay a sinner.LOL I thought you guys were not supposed to judge people but love others. Wow thanks for helping to send sinners to hell. We might as well stay as we are because this is not encouraging.

Sinner:

Christians ARE called to judge - the teachings of each other. We are also told to expel the false teachers from our midst. Dr. Dollar’s ‘theology’ is false teaching, therefore he is to be expelled from our midst.

Kat:

Actually, there IS a point of contention that I forgot to mention yesterday:

Dr. Dollar’s ‘theology’ promotes a worldy, self centered philosophy. This is the exact OPPOSITE of the NT’s heavenly, Christ centered philosophy.

Wow. Its wild how many people are speaking against my pastor on this site.

First of all, prosperity means wholeness or well being. God wants us well in our finances as well as in health, relationships, mentally and emotionally.

Next, the government does look at our financial records. We call them the IRS.

Lastly, Jesus did preach prosperity in Mark 10:29,30 in this life and the life to come. And Matthew 6:33 and many other scriptures as well.

Nobody talks about Pastor Dollar’s teachings on Love, or the anointing.

Nobody talks about the houses and cars that he has freely given away. But I guess you don’t care about those things.

Yenrah:

Dr. Dollar might be well advised to read the ENTIRE passage.

For example, the Mark passage is at the end of the story of the ‘Rich Young Man’.

Here is the passage, NIV (emphasis mine):

17As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

*18"Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good—except God alone.* 19You know the commandments: 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.'[d]"

20"Teacher," he declared, "all these I have kept since I was a boy."

**21Jesus looked at him and loved him. "One thing you lack," he said. "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

22At this the man's face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!"**

24The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, "Children, how hard it is[e] to enter the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

26The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, "Who then can be saved?"

27Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God."

28Peter said to him, "We have left everything to follow you!"

29"I tell you the truth," Jesus replied, "no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel 30will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life. **31But many who are first will be last, and the last first."**

The passage from Matthew, again, one would do well to read the ENTIRE passage: (Once again, NIV, emphasis mine.)

*25"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?* 26Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? *27Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life[b]? *

**28"And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?** 31So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. *34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.*

It is CLEAR that Dr. Dollar seeks to build his CULT using the same techniques as any other cult out there, from the Church of Latter Day Saints to the Brank Davidians to Heaven’s Gate to the National Socialists (aka Nazis). (And yes, Dr. Dollar is just as evil and crazy as any of those groups I just mentioned.)

Take a Scripture out of context, tell people what they want to hear, and then demand that they give you their _ in return for heavenly approval. Its been done for nearly as long as humans have been around, and probably will be around as long as humans are.

The scripture is not out of context. You just focus on the part about the rich man giving.

What was Jesus really saying. He said everybody (including the rich young ruler) can give what they have to God and God will increase it and give it right back to them because he knows you are trustworthy.

The point was not to give it up to be broke.

Yenrah:

Actually, Christ was saying to put him above ALL else, and you will be rewarded IN HEAVEN. There is ZERO mention of EARTHLY gain.

In fact, as I have already stated, the predominate teaching of the NT is that those who believe in Christ will SUFFER in this world.

You are still holding on to your worldly philosophy, exactly as the Cultist Dollar would have you do.

Might I recommend reading a book by Bill Myers called Eli? While it was enlightening for me in many ways, I’m quite sure it will (hopefully) be enlightening to you in others.

By Yenrah

January 9, 2008 1:34 PM | Link to this

Are you sure? Zero mention of earthly gain. He just said in verse 29 that you would gain houses in this life and the life to come. And that when you put him above ALL (which is what we do) he will take care of your other needs.

We only suffer at the hands of sinful people who wish to persecute us.

Not in our finances.

You people are confusing me. I feel so lost. Thanks for not helping. I dont know what I should do. If Christians are called to judge then I can never be right. I have done so much wrong. Oh well I’m hopeless. I shouldnt be a christian then because I don’t want to be judged. Thanks I will stay lost hopefully I find love. I thought Christians were loving and I need love. I’ve been hurt.

I’ve read most of these comments and all I can say is that my family and I were border line destitute. Cars repossessed, on the verge of loosing house, didn’t have money to feed baby. All of this b/c of poor decisions I, the man of the house made.

Knowing all of that Creflo Dollar belled me out by helping me financially. He saved my family, gave us money, helped me get my feet on solid footing again. He didn’t ask for anything in return, all he wanted was to make sure I got into church (not even his church, b/c I don’t live in ATL or NY). This man loves people with his money. From what I hear he has purchased over 100 cars for people that needed them out of his own pocket. Over 40 homes for people that needed them out of his own pocket. How many of you have purchase at least 1 car for someone out of your own pocket? How many of you have even helped a person out with a house note, not asking to be repaid? Until you’ve done that, I don’t really think you have to much to say. A fool can always looke a man with money and say what he should be doing, but until you have it- you really don’t know. Besides until you have it, can we really trust that you’ll do it just b/c you say you will. Creflo Dollar has it and is doing it.

Let them without sin cast the first stone. Since some you so called “Christians” love Jesus so much remember his words, remember how he would have us love one another, and our enemy. For those that are spouting Hate for Dr. Dollar, which by the way I agree with 100%, if you would just Love him instead of saying that the man is going to hell, how much better would your point get across. You people would make it seem that 100% of the people on this earth should be seeing the bible through the same eyes. What one man interprets from the Word most likely always will differ from what others might interpret. But, that is were the blessing lies, because what God will reveal to one man could bring a whole new revelation to man kind, but those who spend their time damming people to Hell will NEVER !!! see it. No one has the power or authority on this earth to send anyone to hell. Just stick with the power and authority you were given here on earth and you might actually get something accomplished on your stay here. And one more thing, for those who spout out things like we are to be persecuted as Christians, and will be hated and everything else, when was the last time you really stepped out there and spoke the truth to a crowd that didn’t want to hear it, probably never. That is the worst type of Christian, the hypocrite, the luke warm, always willing to send someone else to Hell over hear say, but you are the type of people to never analyze your own walk, and because of that you will always stay the same.

Now, I bet you Hate spouting Christians at the beginning of the post are old and stuck in there ways, well I am 24, and I know what the goodness of God brings to me, and what I bring to Him. Maybe if more folks could have more innocent minds you could see the truth in front of you.

God Bless
