Publix is pretty darn good. And there’s a buffet down in Jonesboro, called Mama’s Country Buffet or something, that has great fried chicken and a bunch of good sides. Honestly though, the best is home-made.
Matthews Cafeteria* Why am I giving away a Central DeKalb secret? Sorry DeKalb Police Officers and Detectives for giving away our secret for home cookin and best fried chicken!!!
PUBLIX ON PONCE AND MRS WINNERS ON MORELAND AVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hands down…I have been to many “fine” dining establishmnents and hole in the wall places in Atlanta….belive it or not PUBLIX is #1…Mrs Winners CLOSE second place…not greasy, good crunch, seasoned very well.
My 2 favorites are The Busy Bee Cafe and Publix. Since I moved to Georgia I have not fried chicken in my house because as long as there is a Publix, there is fried chicken in our house.
I’m not sure about Publix regular fried chicken, but I do know they have the BEST wings ever! Oh how I miss those honey mustard wings. No publix in Kentucky but I stop in everytime I come back home to visit.
Should also mention Glady Knights Chicken and Waffles. Eating that fried chicken is a wonderful experience. Even Adam on “Man vs Food” loves it! Used to like popeyes but once I found out that they use MSG, the shine came off. Don’t eat it anymore.
I won’t say they are the best, but South City Kitchen deserved to be on this list. They have very good fried chicken (much better than any I’ve had at Gladys and Ron’s Chicken and Waffles).
I haven’t had fried chicken at a lot of the places mentioned by others here, but I had some at South City Kitchen in Midtown a few days ago and it was so good my eyes went crossed for a few seconds. Certainly the best I can remember.
Family Traditions Restaurant in Townelake has the best food anywhere but their fried chicken is like Granny used to make. And don’t miss out on Fridays when the veggie speciality is fried okra!
The Brickery Grill & Bar in Sandy Springs has the best buttermilk fried chicken around..an old family recipe. Extremely delicious and extremely addictive…
Big Chick” in Washignton, Ga! The Hot 3 piece, fries and a roll. Let the heat of the chicken soften the roll in 5 minutes. I’m like past the Pepper Sauce! Help ME! I’m about to faint!
Late nite! “Church’s Fried Chicken” with a Roll not a biscuit. Walmart has the cheapest at $4.49 for a 8 piece to Go! Great for family Unions. Busy Bee is good to me if I want to Celebrate a Good week! Oh, that Big Guy Tim McLendon in Grant Park is good too. Oy!
Good down memory lane with me for a moment: “Day old friend Chicken smothered in brown gravy with fine chopped or thinly sliced onions simmering for ten minutes in that wonderful brown gravy. Over a bowl of Grits! Annie Bolted the Door!! Don’t let anyone Inside! He made biscuits that cold morning and I asked him to marry me!
Does anyone remember the GREAT fried chicken at the Woolworths downtown? I would slip away for lunch and grab a serving all wrapped up in a foil bag, came with a dinner roll, the best! Difficult to find really GOOD fried chicken, beyond ones own kitchen.
It makes me sad that some people do not know what GOOD Fried Chicken taste like. As a true Southerner I was fortunate to grow up in a home where Fried Chicken was a staple of our diet. Good Fried Chicken does not come from Walmart, Public’s Deli,Church’s or Mrs. Winners. For me Mathews has good Fried Chicken, another good place is Maritza and Franks in Hapeville.
Midway Mealhouse hands down. Midway peels the filmy skin layer off their chicken and it is salty and juicy- Their sides do not match their chicken. Matthews in Tucker is good but not as good as the one the brothers opened in Winder that burned down but their sides are amazing.
Oh Man!! If there’s any fried chicken in this town that’s better than Colonnade’s I need to know it. I’ve been eating Colonnade’s fried chicken for over 60 years and never had better.
There is nothing like a two-piece white from Church’s Chicken with a pepper, fried okra, and a honey biscuit! I live in KY now and we don’t have Church’s here, only KFC (of course).
Why do people write Publix or other ridiculous things like that? I understand Watershed and Buckners for sure, but it’s ridiculous when people put Krogers or some goofy thing like that in here. Don’t waste people’s time
Of the chains, Popeye’s is best, especially the spicy. Crispier and less greasy than KFC. Church’s used to be good - better than KFC, but I haven’t been there in a while.
Grocery store fried chicken (like Publix) is an abomination - usually more breading than meat. The breading can break your teeth when hot, and is only semi-edible when cold.
For one-off, Mom & Pop type places, Buckner’s has my vote, but is a haul for me. Closer to home I like Daddy’s in Acworth and The Whistle Stop in Kennesaw.
Buckners in Jackson, hands down, plus all you can eat family style with fresh cooked veggies - Sunday best day of week. Colonnade on Cheshire Bridge for per portion plate if you want to stay closer in to Atlanta. If traveling north, the Dilard House in Dillard, just north of Clayton, also family style is wonderful as well.
I didn’t even grow up in the South, but even I know Publix fried chicken isn’t any good. How can something be dried out and greasy at the same time? I’m looking forward to trying some of these other places that people have mentioned, though!
My Wife makes the most succulence chicken I’ve ever tasted, It will make you slap your mama! for serving you that dry over salted crap from KFC I think its the combination of spices and buttermilk soak that gives it that juicy flavor, damn I’m hungry just talking about it.
PS. Your all invited to my house for Sunday dinner.
Favorite is Popeyes chicken. I get the mild but put the hot sauce on it. Great thing to eat before going out to have a couple of drinks. Then I love Buckners chicken when we are heading to Savannah for the weekend!!
Maryland’s Fried Chicken in Augusta, Ga is a good one. Also, Wishbone, which is the recipe that Kroger’s use. WifeSaver is also a good one! You cant go wrong!
It’s called BEST OF THE BIG A=Atlanta. Not Augusta,Savannah. I am not driving 2+ hours for fried chicken. I’ve only been to Busy Bee twice in the past 10 months but their chicken is pretty good.
I heard Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House was good in Savanah. I like Busy Bee. Not to much batter. Kroger’s on a budget, it uses the Wishbone Recipe. “Holla!”
For those who love JCT Kitchen. Go to that strip mall earlier in the day and check out the fried chicken at Star Provisions (the front part of Bachannalia). It’s an amazingly light crispy salty perfect delight. Keep in mind this is lunch only.
My fried chicken is the best but since I never feel like cooking the best fried chicken around is POPEYES! I live in Villa Rica and I drive all the way to East West Connector or Camp Creek Parkway to get Popeyes chicken. If you are in the KNOW please tell someone to invest in one closer to Carroll County!
The Historic Green Manor Restaurant in Fairburn has the best fried chicken outside of my mamma’s! Like manna from heaven. The chicken fried steak will make your tongue slap your brains out too!!!!!
If you are ready for a road trip BUCKNERS is the best but if you want the best local (hands down!) it’s at the CORNER CAFE on the square in Lawrenceville!
Publix is the best!!! #1 in town, always made fresh..best buy in town! Chicken is made fresh and available in family combo meals to reduce cost for large families!!!
I was in Hartsfield Airport in Feb.
2009 and ate dinner at Paschell’s. I heard that Paschell’s was known for its fried
chicken, it was surprising good.
All you folks who are mentioning Buckner’s-I’m betting you’ve never been to Hunter’s Family Restaurant in Jackson. Besides fried chicken, they also have great fried pork chops.
1st - Ryan’s Steakhouse
2nd - Publix
BUT———
We need to have a “TASTE OF ATLANTA’S FRIED CHICKEN” Festival where ALL of the nominee’s get in one location at one time and sell a taste of their entry to the public so that they can cast a more inclusive and knowledgeable vote. Plus - it would be like being a kid in a candy store for us fried chicken lovers! Why, my favorite cologne is “Eau de Fried Chicken”!
Po Folks serves a good fried chicken these days. BUT the best fried chicken I have ever tasted was served at the old PASCHAL’s restaurant and at the old Chicken Q. ….wonder where ARE those recipes!
Mary Macs has the best fried chicken #1
Gladys & Ron’s Chicken and Waffles and if you happen to live on the north side where there is no southern cooking…Alpha Soda fried chicken is great, just call 30 minutes in advance so it’s ready!
Paschal’s and Busy Bee! Both on the southside of A-T-L! Over 100 years of cooking delicious southern cuisine. Can someone please pass the fried chicken, collard greens, ham hocks, and cornbread?
Matthew’s and Weaver D has the best fried chicken, period. Food taste like other things is in the ‘buds’. I think Buckner’s is terrible and very over priced. Butches in Jonesboro, are you kidding? The worst food I’ve ever eaten and not very clean.
Decades ago there was a cafeteria chain in Atlanta called Morrison’s. They had the BEST fried chicken hands down.
The closest in taste to it that I’ve been able to find is the Collard Green Cafe. If you’re able to ignore the grumpy old man that runs the place, you’re in for a great piece of chicken!
Didn’t like the Colonade’s chicken. The Blue Willow and Gladys Knight’s are pretty good, but certainly not the best. Didn’t like Matthew’s Cafeteria’s chicken either.
Nobody does fried chicken better than the Colonnade, order that with the macaroni and cheese and finish that baby off with a big ol slice of Coconut cream pie. NOW THATS WHAT I CALL EATING!!!
for those who say Publix yuk, well just maybe a lot of us like the crunch. I could do without the inside. I try to buy the skinniest piece they have just to have the crust. I am a native of Atlanta so truly southern. Matthews is very good as well as Blue Willow but I still prefer Publix to any around.
Boortz is upset because his name was misspelled by the very company HE works for. No wonder he preaches on HATE so often. The man is full of it…HATE, that is!
Keep it up Neal (Spelled correctly BTW!)

The best would have to be Paschal’s. I love the slightly salty, crispy fried outside and juicy on the inside - YUM!!!
A close (and by that I mean, the winner eaked out by a hair) second would have to be Busy Bee. Third would be Thelma’s Kitchen.
The chains (Publix, Popeye’s, etc.) are good only when you have to take it in bulk - like to a dinner or picnic.
The posters have put up many I haven’t tried and first on my list will be a trip to Jackson, GA!

1st - Ryan’s Steakhouse 2nd - Publix BUT——— We need to have a “TASTE OF ATLANTA’S FRIED CHICKEN” Festival where ALL of the nominee’s get in one location at one time and sell a taste of their entry to the public so that they can cast a more inclusive and knowledgeable vote. Plus - it would be like being a kid in a candy store for us fried chicken lovers! Why, my favorite cologne is “Eau de Fried Chicken”!

Didn’t like Matthew’s Cafeteria’s chicken either.

for those who say Publix yuk, well just maybe a lot of us like the crunch. I could do without the inside. I try to buy the skinniest piece they have just to have the crust. I am a native of Atlanta so truly southern. Matthews is very good as well as Blue Willow but I still prefer Publix to any around.
