Where have you had the worst sweet tea in and around Atlanta?

It seems appropriate that the top vote-getter for our worst sweet tea question is a sandwich chain based in Connecticut. We all know that the best sweet tea comes from the South.

The “winner” for worst sweet tea was Subway. Check out your picks for the sweet tea hall of shame

And since our mamas taught us to keep mum if we didn’t have something nice to say, we decided not to pile any more shame upon the Atlanta tea-makers who might fall short on occasion — so there are no critic’s picks this time around. Check in next week, because you can bet we’ll have something to say about the best sweet tea in Atlanta.

Don’t really like or drink the stuff. But, I would have to say our friends sweet tea is horrible. He uses 2 cups of sugar and 10 sugar tablets. Can you say GROSS?!!

I’ve had bad sweet tea everywhere. Most chain restaurants over sweeten the tea, then they also make it really strong, which makes it taste like syrup. The best sweet tea is light in color and not overly sweet. Tip - if you can’t see through the glass, it’s too strong, and if you can see the sugar swirling around, it’s too sweet. I usually order half sweet / half unsweet. That usually corrects the issue. The worst I’ve had recently was at Outback Steakhouse, but I have to admit that I normally get water at most places.

Williamson Brothers BBQ has great tea. As does Schlotzsky’s Delie on Virginia Ave in Hapeville.

Since you haven’t gotten any responses to your original question, I’m not going to answer it either…

The worst sweet tea on the planet is in Toronto. The more a restaurant advertises “fresh brewed” tea, the more likely it is that they’re serving something that tastes like severely oversweetened instant tea from the dollar store.

(Does anyone else have a friend who orders unsweet tea then puts in twelve Splenda packets? I have two who do this and I can’t figure it out.)

Anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon line. I asked once in New England if they had fresh-brewed iced tea (knowing it’s better to ask first). I was told yes and was brought a can of sweet tea - like a can of coke - when I said this was not what I had in mind, she pointed out it said “fresh- brewed” right on the can. I opted for bottled water.

I hate to be contrary, but the term “sweet tea” is not Southern, but is the term given Southern tea by Northerners during the great invasion of the 60’s. Iced tea is sweetened, end of story. When “they” came down, anything that wasn’t “like it is in New Yowak” was considered repulsive, and since what “they” called tea wasn’t sweetened, they had to differentiate theirs from real iced tea by referring to it as “sweet tea.” I am a 60-year old native Atlantan and we NEVER referred to it as “sweet tea” until Northerners started showing up by the boatload. And while I’m ranting, that was the beginning of the end of Southern living as we know it.
