Lit on the Bricks

My thanks to staff writer Adrianne Murchison for alerting me to the “Lit on the Bricks” poetry reading event Sunday at Grady High School in Midtown.

Several local poets will be reading from the anthology “Under the Rock Umbrella: Contemporary Poets from 1951-1977” by poets born during the height of the rock music era. Among the scheduled readers: 2007 Pulitzer Prize winner Natasha Trethewey.

These aren’t rock lyrics, but one can hear a rock influence in some of the poems. “Parents have a chance to squeeze into their patchwork bell-bottoms, ” said Julie Bookman, from the Grady High School Foundation, which is presenting the event. “It’s a throwback to rock ‘n’ roll music.”

The Varsity will provide food, and Jake’s Ice Cream will feature its special “Hippy Chocolate Chippy” flavor.

The event spotlights National Poetry Month. Details: “Under the Rock Umbrella: Contemporary Poets from 1951-1977.” 4-6:30 p.m. Sunday. $10; free for ages 18 and younger. The courtyard at Henry W. Grady High School, 929 Charles Allen Drive N.E., Atlanta. www.gradyhsfoundation.org.

It’s great to see a Pulitzer Prize winner who has been so active in bringing poetry to many events since she won the prize. I’m especially pleased to see poets engaging teen-agers when the reading of poetry seems to be mostly poets reading other poets. Also, poetry slams and performance poetry by poets such as Alice Lovelace, Theresa Davis, Karin G, and others brings this art alive.
