‘Tut 2’ on the way?

tut.jpg

The AJC reported last fall that the blockbuster exhibition known as “Tut 2” might be coming to Atlanta.

Looks like we’ll find out for sure next Wednesday. The Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University just sent out an advisory saying it would make a “landmark announcement” that day and that Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin has been invited.

We know that the Carlos Museum had been talking with the exhibitors about bringing Tut 2 to the city-owned Civic Center.

Carlos Museum officials say they can’t talk about the announcement, but word is that “King Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharoahs” will be at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center in Midtown this fall.

To learn more about what’s in this massive exhibition, check out the website.

What do you think? Are you interested in seeing the treasures of King Tut?

I saw the exhibit in Los Angeles a couple of years ago…It’s not that impressive. The relics look just like they do in photographs. It was no big deal to see them in person, IMO.

My class drove down to New Orleans to see the Tut exhibit in 1976. It was a long wait but it was(is) definitely worth standing in line for. If it comes to Atlanta I will be sure to take my son to see it.

I agree with sk8nmomma. I saw the exhibit in Chicago at the Field Museum last year it was very disappointing and uninspired. Plus, the crowds were ridiculous.

I missed the exhibit when I was in Seattle many years ago due to scheduling conflicts with the business purpose of my trip. I vowed I wouldn’t pass up that opportunity again!

I saw it in Fort Lauderdale several years ago. It is treasures from that era, NOT the actual artifacts of Tut himself. Egypt will not let the actual treasures of King Tut out of the country.

I had the pleasure of viewing this exhibit in Cairo. I also was able to go in his tomb. I would encourage that if you can go, GO.

I saw this exhibit in Philadelphia last year and wanted everyone I knew to see it. Now they can. It is a great show—and just the kind of show that Atlanta needs. I remember thinking that Tut and Atlanta would make a great pair. I hope we are all right. Thanks for a great news item. Priscilla Daves

This exhibit is NOTHING like the 1979 exhibit— I saw “2” in Ft. Lauderdale a couple of years back— not worth the time, frankly.

Go to Cairo instead (or London— that’s where the best Egyptian collection is anyway…).

No items from the Tutankhamen discovery have been outside Egypt in 30 years, until this winter when the Antiquities commission allowed an exhibit in London. While not the entire collection that was on display in the 70’s, this is a great honor for Atlanta made possible, I’m sure, by the gracious return by Emory of the ‘unknown’ pharoah a couple of years ago.

Yes, our families and friends welcome this grand exhibition of King Tut 2, here in our great City, with our great Mayor, and our great People! Remember the beauty and excitement of Atlanta’s 1996 Summer Olympics?…Well, just imagine the thrill of this exhibit—“Oh what a feeling!…”

Thank you for the opportunity to comment.

I saw the 1st King Tutin New Orleans& the exhibit was incredible. It would be Great to have the 2nd King Tut in Atlanta.. from all of the reviews I have read this 2nd Tut is nothing like the 1st…a good many of the pieces are not allowed out of the country but even if 1/3 of the exhibit comes to Atlanta it is well worth the time and effort to see it…Thanks Emory and Mayor Franklin.

I saw Tut’s artefacts in the Egyptian history museum in Cairo, truly astonishing and amazing. Also got to travel to Luxor and visit the actual tomb, where Tut’s body is still interred (they took all the valuable stuff out as well as the mummy, but that was later returned out of respect, or maybe fear of the curse…). Highly recommend it, though admittedly I was travelling over there before 9/11 so couldn’t be sure of the saftety now, but Egypt makes a great deal of money from tourism, so it’s generally pretty safe for foreigners.

I saw the Tut exhibit in San Francisco in the 70’s. It was definitely worth while; but, at the time they were saying that no venue in Atlanta was secure enough to house the exhibit. The Atlanta Civic Center was here, then. What happened?

The reason the exhibit is coming here now is the Carlos Museum, which has built a strong reputation over the last 20 years as a significant, scholarly museum in the antiquities field.

“this sad city is starving for some culture”?? Oh, please. Have you been to the Carlos? Seen any of the recent exhibits at the High, which is really starting to hit its stride with a smart mix of exhibits (currently) in photography, contemporary art, American Modern (O’Keefe), African Art, and antiquities from the Louvre. Go see a play, or two. Go hear one of the nation’s best orchestras.

So, what is the web site to check out?????? It wasn’t given. I would love to be able to come to Atlanta to see the exhibit, but due to the price of gas, it is out of the question. I have to admit though that I have a great interest in Ancient Egypt to include King Tut.
