Memories of The Fox Theatre

fox.jpg

I went to “Larry, Carols and Mo!” at The Fox Theatre last night. Now in its second year, this sweet, nostalgic evening includes Christmas carols, organ music by resident organist Larry Douglas Embury, faux snow, pictures with Santa and a movie — this year, the classic “Miracle on 34th Street.” It’s free, and nearly every seat was filled.

Shortly after we sat down, my husband said, as he has said before, “They were going to tear this place down?” He keeps asking because it’s just so hard to fathom that, back in the 1970s, this grand old theater was going to be demolished to make way for an office building for BellSouth. Thankfully, some Atlantans fought to save it. (Including Joe Patten, the fellow who still lives in an apartment at the Fox. You can see photos of his home if you scroll down to “photos/multimedia” and click on “Phantom of the Fox” on our arts page.

What are your fondest memories of the Fox? Did you love a recent concert, or perhaps you remember when it was a down-at-the-heel art movie house when Midtown was virtually abandoned? Or did you attend a memorable party in the Egyptian ballroom?

I very much enjoyed the Nickel Creek/Bela Fleck show in October. The Fox has such great acoustics, combined with a very respectful audience that night, made it a perfect concert. Its beauty is merely a bonus.

I never saw a movie there, but every show from the 70’s on was memorable. Santana, Genesis, the Grateful Dead, Zappa, the Clash, Allman Bros, Talking Heads, B-52s, String Cheese Incident, Yonder Mtn String Band, and others, were all great nights in the Fox.

Looking forward to ringing in the New Year with Derek Trucks/ Susan Tedeschi in the grand old theatre.
