Pick Your Hometown Grammy Winner - Day Four
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The music industry’s highest honor - the Grammy Award - will be handed out Feb. 8 in Los Angeles. And as has been the case in recent years, there are a remarkable number of contenders with Georgia connections.
With that in mind, each day this week we’ve highlighted a category with Atlanta (or Georgia) nominees - in italics - and asked for your winning pick.
Today’s category: Best Rap Performance By A Duo or Group - especially remarkable in that it is the only one, out of the 110 that will be handed out Sunday, where four out of the five nominees have hometown connections. (Not to mention, only two out of the five were really heard on radio). Here they are - in, fair warning, unedited form:
“Royal Flush,” Big Boi featuring Raekwon and Andre 3000
“Swagga Like Us,” Jay-Z & T.I. featuring Kanye West and Lil Wayne
“Mr. Carter,” Lil Wayne featuring Jay-Z
“Wish You Would,” Ludacris featuring T.I.
“Put On,” Young Jeezy featuring Kanye West

I think you all should remove the videos due to the foul language. Do it for the kids please!!!!

I think kids use fouler language than this in everyday conversation. Also, if you actually researched the demographics for AJC.com, I don’t believe there are too many “kids” (18 and under) on this site.

Who cares? Rap isn’t a real art form anyway. And “ATL” is a term for those in the hood. IntelligentCitizen is a misnomer. You don’t do bad things and justify it by saying “well everyone else does it.” That’s just stupid. Remove the videos.

Isn’t “ATL” the airport code for Atlanta?

to concerned citizen why is it so wrong to “I think you all should remove the videos due to the foul language. Do it for the kids please!!!!” but when someone like Micheal Phelps takes pictures of himself smoking a pipe its no big deal.

DO NOT REMOVE VIDEOS… I doubt if there are any kids reading the ajc, but I’m pretty sure they saw Mike Phelps smoking that pipe… Stop trippin

So nice to see the higher art forms on the list… I am unimpressed with the options.

Is this the best anyone at the AJC can come up with? Glad I don’t actually buy this paper…

If the music offended you why did you take the time to listen? Come’on, you know what these rappers represent. DON’T REMOVE THE VIDEOS! The likelihood of young people on AJC.com – NOT. Check your kids’ MySpace and Facebook pages – you’ll find the same videos!

I’d say that THREE of the five receive regular airplay, at least in Atlanta - Swagga Like Us, Mr. Carter, and Put On.

Michael Phelps just lost millions you morons. I’d say he paid the price. Jay-Z and Young Jeezy called Obama an “n” and bashed Bush AT THE INAUGURATION, without any real justification, but that’s ok with you. That’s the reason a large number of blacks will never succeed. They fall for the “black thing.” They’ll always be idiots, and those who are supposed to look out for them profit from keeping them down (Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and every rapper out there). You can pretend it’s not tru, but that doesn’t make it so.

You’re glad you don’t buy this paper? Trust me, the paper version doesn’t have embedded video. Maybe you’d be better off with it. ;)

Man everything a BLACKMAN do is wrong. And Especially to you redneck ni55as. You so called educated black men that despise your on race. Rock and Roll music talks about the same thing as rap music and the videos are just as vulgar. The people who makes the satanic music is labeled as good guys compared to rappers. Man get serious. You are mad cause you have a black president. LOL ha get over it. Our music is no worse than any other music. Everything will always be a black and white issue to most people. But always keep this in mind. Us blacks that you love to hate are the chosen people of GOD. That’s the reason we won’t just go away like you prejudice people have been trying do to us since the beginning of time. Slavery, KKK, HIV, nor Crack. has killed us off yet. We’re still here in your face. WE ARE THE ISReaLITES. The blessed seed of abraham. WE will always be here. Whether you like it or not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, although I am open to all types of music and yes some of it is offensive, last time I check there was a thing called the First Ammendment and that allows every citizen the right to freedom of speech, and no matter how we may feel about it, there is a market for it and they have the right to both hear it and listen to it.

My vote is for “Put On” or “Royal Flush” I think “Put On” will win.
Art is art, whether you like it or not. It is expression and can be perceived many ways and should not be censored. If there is potentially offensive content and is going to be displayed where a general audience will be exposed, they should be warned (as they were here) and allowed to not listen. This goes for rap, speed metal, paintings, comedy, whatever the art form. A right to free speech folks.

I’m definitely with jan that those are the two best songs up for the award (how did Wish You Would get nominated? It bumps in the car, but it personifies the bad stereotypes of rap). I’ll also agree that Put On will win.
Speaking of which, MAN did Jeezy get robbed or what? The Recession was definitely Rap Album of the Year worthy.

stfu,
What do the black Muslims think of your claim that they’re Israelites? Moron. 20,000 black people couldn’t leave New Orleans before Katrina even though they were warned for 2 weeks, but 1 million managed to organize a trip to Obama’s inauguration in DC pretty fast didn’t they? Hmmm. Yeah, chosen people I’ll bet. Let’s how “chosen” you feel when Obama screws up, as he’s already doing with the ridiculous “stimulus” plan.

Everything Andre 3000 touches is gold. Royal Flush should win, but it probably won’t.

Rap is crap, and these awards shows are rigged. Its all the same, anyone can do this crap you don’t need talent to do this
