Modern Skirts — From The Road
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The second of the two Dispatches From The Road today comes from drummer John Swint of Athens pop-rockers Modern Skirts, performing tonight at The Earl.
Planning to go? Have a great Skirts story to share?
Well, again, here’s John’s - complete with the personal candids he wanted to share with the Atlanta Music Scene, ABOVE:
We left Richmond, Virginia at 2:00 p.m. after our arrival there earlier at 4:00 a.m. We were staying at my girlfriend’s house for the night. We were on our way from playing an album release show at Criminal Records in Atlanta the day before. We went straight from Atlanta up I-85 to Richmond, feeling great. We usually feel pretty good at the beginning of the tour. We are getting along and excited to be back on the road, excited to be with each other, and reminiscent about how much fun we’ve had and how much trouble we’ve gotten into in the past. We can’t wait to reclaim the excitement of the past trips. But usually, by the end of the tour, the friendly chatter ceases. The excitement is over, and we can’t wait to get away from each other. But, let’s be positive. This is the beginning of a great tour. It’s gonna be a freakin’ blast. Lots of fun van time to look forward to on our long journey.
After a quick rest in Richmond, and convincing my girlfriend’s dog that she was not invited to go with us, we are on our way to Boston, home of the Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots, and Paul Revere. Today will turn out to be a long drive as well. We got some lunch off of the first exit that had food. We passed a break-dancing Lady Liberty who was popping and locking and breaking it down. We decided that it was good that America is making a stand to appeal to cross-cultural youth with this new mascot. If that’s not the case, then at least a schizophrenic homeless man who found a statue of liberty suit has something to do during the day while listening to the music inside his head. Lady Liberty really did have some bangin’ moves, though. Go America!
We drove for another ten hours up I-95. I’ll spare the details, since they were mostly fart jokes and other forms of childish shenanigans that happen all to often when you are in a van with a bunch of bored dudes who have cabin fever. We drove. It got colder. We drove. It got darker. We drove. It got much colder. We arrived in Boston at 2:00 a.m. We were amazed by the mounds of snow everywhere as we parked in front of our friend’s house where we would be staying for the night. We get our bags out of the back door of the van, and are ready to go inside. Then, probably because everything had gone so well all day, we hit a major snag. The big back door of the van would not shut all the way. Something must have gotten frozen during our long drive. Well, this sucked because it’s freezing, and we’re parked on a street with thousands of dollars worth of our musical equipment in the back of our van with a door that doesn’t close. We wrestled with it, trying to fix it for an hour before giving up and tying the door semi-shut with bungee cables. Then we slept.
Today, we took the van to a shop here in Boston where the back lock will, hopefully, be as good as new. We’ll hang around the city today, and play a show tonight at TT The Bear’s. Then, off we go with the rest of the tour. We’ll be hitting Brooklyn and D.C. Then it’s back down to the considerably less snowy Southeast where we’ll play to our friends at the EARL on the 30th, and our snuggly friends back home at the 40 Watt the next night. We are staying positive and looking forward to the rest of this cold, long, wonderful journey.
