Akon — The Cartoon?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Yesterday Atlanta rapper-singer-songwriter-producer Akon took a step backwards in the image control department, pleading guilty to harassment for tossing a fan off stage at an upstate New York concert last year; (resulting in an agreement to perform 65 hours of community service and a $250 fine).
Today, a nudge forward perhaps?
Akon has signed a deal with Goanimate.com, where — according to the press release — “users can create custom, movie-style animations with Saturday morning cartoon characters, politicians and celebrities
A winning animation using Akon’s hit songs and characters will be posted on Akononline.com, MySpace.com/Akon, Loud.com and UniversalMotown.com. And the ones with the most views will earn the creator an autographed copy of his new CD “Freedom,” and other prizes. (For contest details go HERE ).
“We are thrilled to have found an innovative partner that gives Akon fans a creative way to interact with their favorite artist and each other,” Ayal Kleinman, VP of Marketing and New Media said in a news release. “The GoAnimate software is the perfect tool to enable all music fans to express themselves on the web without extensive internet knowledge and skills.”
“We are very pleased to announce this partnership with music superstar Akon,” added Stone Newman, Senior VP of Licensing and Business Development for GoAnimate.com. This partnership marks our first music license and allows us to reach a completely different fan base. “GoAnimate.com gives Akon fans the chance to actively interact with one another.”
(Mind you, this deal was inked and the release was sent out before Akon’s plea).
Have some ideas for an Akon cartoon? Think you’ll want to enter the contest? Or that this a good move for Billboard magazine’s pick for top pop artist of the year last year?

Two words: “Whoa, whoa!”
Let’s think this one through before such a move. Who will be his market? Will this be an “Adult Swim” caliber show?
Think about his songs, their message, and the effect on kids. Additionally, the songs, message, and how the adults now act to it.
