Indigo Girls Launch Their Own Label
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
What started out as — and has long felt like — an independent movement is now officially one, again.
Legendary Atlanta folk duo Indigo Girls have established an imprint — IG Recordings — and its first release will be their own: a two-disc set they’ve already recorded titled “Poseidon And The Bitter Bug.” Emily Saliers and Amy Ray’s first studio CD in three years — actually a full band version of the album and an acoustic version with a bonus track — is due in stores March 24, 2009.
“I am overwhelmingly excited to be independent because it really is where the heart of music sits for me,” Ray said in a press release. “I don’t have many regrets about the major-label life of the band because we certainly got a lot out of it. We were lucky enough to be on Epic when Pearl Jam and Rage Against The Machine were our label-mates and the company was developing bands with the intent of creating catalog artists. That has all changed, and it’s just not worth being on a major. It hasn’t felt worth it for a long time. Beyond that, it never fed my soul the way an independent career can.”
“I feel a great sense of freedom in finally being rid of the major-label world,” Ray continued. “It’s been a burden for a while for me. I felt an honesty and sincerity making Poseidon, because I fully believe in independence.” Saliers added: “It feels liberating and centering, even in the midst of change.”
Looking forward to “Poseidon”? What did you think of the Indigo Girls’ independently-released debut album, 1987’s “Strange Fire”?

As amazing as the entire Indigo Girls catalog is…the all-time masterpiece is Amy’s new solo album “DIDN’T IT FEEL KINDER”. Personally, I could never thank Amy or Emily enough for their music…I rank them up there with The Beatles…and I am a straight male!!!

Bold:Great to know that Emily & Amy have gone “full circle” from local & independent to “Big label” and back! Italic: I went to High School with Emily & Amy, remembering the band days, their sisters, soccer, Emily winning talent shows, etc, it is great they have been successful, popular and made an impact on the music world greatly exceeding the Atlanta market. Bold: Best wishes to continued success with the new label!

Good luck to them; with internet & indie distribution, the majors are becoming less relevant all the time.
That said, doesn’t Amy already have her own label? And the idea of band and acoustic versions of the songs sound indulgent to me… it’s as if artists can’t edit themselves any more… which is why they start their own labels. (A real producer could tell them which versions were better; that’s what they do.)

An extablished act Like Indigo Girls don’t need anything that a major label can offer (MTV? Tour Promotion? Top 40 Radio play?) All an established group needs is a promotions team, a distributor, a booking agent, a lawyer and some people that they can trust. You are going to see plenty of the “120 Minutes” crowd and 90’s alternative crowd start to do this - many have already. They can sell 1/10th as many records and make the same money and control their own business

The Girls have never gotten the recognition they deserve in low these 20 plus years. Two guys who played and entertained at their level would have graced the cover of the Rolling Stone multiple times. Just proves the record business is a mans world. I wish The Girls all the success in the world with their independant lable. With their continued focus on the fan, they are sure to succeed!

A great band, and Amy’s solo work is impressive too. I’m glad that they are finding a way to continue to flourish creatively.
Now, as a straight male, if I could just find a way to admit publicly that they are one of my all-time favorite bands.
There I am in younger days.. star-gazing… painting picture-perfect maps of how my life and loves would be. Not counting the unmarked paths of misdirection my compass, faith in love’s perfection I missed ten thousand miles of road I should have seen.
Perfect. Just absolutely perfect.

Daemon is still around. It was started by (and is still run by) Amy Ray and it recently released her new album, Didn’t It Feel Kinder. I think that IG felt that it was a conflict of interest to release the new record on Amy’s label - besides, I think they needed something that was their own.
They do have a very professional and well-versed producer, Mitchell Froom, producing Poseidon.

I can’t think of any other musical group who’s grown musically the way these two have over the last couple decades. If they were men, they’d be regarded in the leagues of Neil Young or a Bob Dylan. As it is, the mainstream press barely recognizes their work. But the fans know it. And they’ll keep turning out with each concert and each new album. “Didn’t it Feel Kinder” was my favorite record of 2008.
