Janet Jackson’s Triumphant Homecoming
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Soooo, Janet Jackson was really, really sick, right?
Hospitalized a few weeks back (due to what was later reported as migraine-associated vertigo), and taking so long to recover that she had to reschedule this, and other dates on her first tour in seven years, yes?
Couldn’t have been.
As the part-time Atlantan that appeared before a just-over half full Philips Arena Sunday night gave a 100% performance. A performance so well-crafted and enthusiastically-received that many in the audience appeared exhausted after spending two plus hours on their feet.
“It feel so good to be home,” an often smiling, giggly and seemingly indefatigable Jackson said. “I love you ATL!”
The superstar appeared on the stage alone and at top speed - charging through the hits that helped make her one of the biggest contemporary pop and R&B artists ever: “Pleasure Principle.” “Control.” “What Have You Done For Me Lately?”
And even when she hit the next tune, “Feedback” — from the album “Discipline,” one of three or four commercial disappointments of recent years —Â the crowd sang and danced to it like it was of her 1986-2001 height.
Speaking of dancing, that is one of the more remarkable things about Jackson — and her shows. Where most fans are likely to sing along to the act they paid to see’s hits; Jackson fans go the extra step — literally, pantomining every move from the MTV-annointed “Icon’s” videos in the small space between their chair and the one in front.
Choreography was apparently a top priority to Jackson as well as there were 10 dancers on stage to her three band members (including Atlanta drummer Lil John Roberts); who were set off in a corner, and mostly in the dark.
What should have been left in the shadows — if not scrapped altogether — were Jackson’s unflattering mohawk hair piece, often unfortunate, Cher-in-Vegas choices of costumes and confusing video clips between songs. But as long as she hit every move fans remembered from the “Rhythm Nation” or “Miss You Much” videos those kinds of things probably registered with the thousands as minute.
(And you know, after all of that sweating Jackson did, that pinned-up mohawk kind of made at least practical sense).
Spotted in the arena were Mayor Shirley Franklin, Atlanta entertainment mogul Tyler Perry, local Grammy winners Ciara (who has often cited Jackson as an influence) and Ne-Yo (whose vocals are a modern take on Jackson’s brother, Michael), producer Tricky (who worked on Jackson’s most recent CD, “Discipline”) and in the corner of a VIP section on the floor — on his feet and dancing too — Jackson’s longtime boyfriend Jermaine Dupri.
Were you there — and if so what was your take on the show? (See the rest of our photo gallery HERE).

I’ve been waiting for Janet to return to ATL for years. She performed GREAT!!! She is such an ICON with so many hits that every song sung was like Musical Bliss. With her recent illness, she came back roaring and I LOVE HER!! Eventhough she has gained a little weight she was struttin her stuff like it was no ones business. She looked very happy and comfortable and I’m very proud of her. I will always support her till the very end. You can do no wrong in my book Janet. Job WELL DONE!!!!

The show was FANTASTIC!!! Janet you are TRULY a diva in your own right. I was so exhausted when I got home from standing and dancing the entire time. I will always love and support Janet. You are truly the Queen of Pop. I can’t wait for the next concert.

The show was AMAZING!! Janet was awesome- her body is SICK!!! For her to be 40 something, Miss Lady is FIONE! It gave me even more of a reason to get my 30 something behind in the gym! She danced the whole darn show…truly truly a great show. I’m even more of a Janet fan now. Much Respect!

It was 2/12 hours of singing, dancing, and sweating..and that was just me!! This show was incredible! I have no voice from screaming and dancing. The staging made you feel like you were part of the show and Janet was performing only for you. Absolutely wonderful!

Janet was fat and lazy. For a concert that is in its 5th month she didn’t look good at all. No wonder she cancelled other tours…she couldn’t move….the costumes where ugly and cheap…hiding her size 12 figure and that nicely round …well…… and what’s up with the hair extensions on the side of her outfits…not a fashion statement.
Also, too many short songs remix. I know she has allot of hits, but maybe next time the most selling of her #’s she can do the whole song…got tired of moving, then switching steps to keep up with her changing to the next song.
What I will say nicely done is her voice. She sounded great and the stage was set up nice. A diva in control! And the best compliment I can give is that finely a mature concert for her mature fans…well done!!!
I love you JJ, allways will. cant satify everyone, but you did me….thank you very much

GREAT CONCERT!! I would go back again tomorrow. So what if she gained “a little” weight, she can dance, and she can sing. My question is: was the guy from the audience really from the audience or was he planted there for entertainment purposes? Either way it was a great concert!

Janet was awesome last night - what more can I say. The show, the songs, her perfomance, her body - Woooowwwww! I was worn completely out afterwards. It was definitely worth the money. Much love to you Janet.

Keith, thats exactly why I didn’t go. From the early pics, I had never seen Janet so out of shape on tour. She’s not fat, but that is not the toned Janet that I am use to (on tour).

Who cares what she looks like? No matter who physical appearance, she can sing and dance like no other current performer and last night proved it. She puts on a great show and I had a great time. Thank you, Ms. Jackson

IT speaks volumes that she can’t even fill up Phillips arena.

Janet was fantastic last night. Absolutely fantastic! She looked great…and sounded great.
The hits just kept on coming! My absolutel favorite part was the Pre-Control medley of songs she did from the first two albums. She was right when she said that was for the “diehard fans”. Well done, Janet! I’m hoping I can make it to another city before the tour wraps!

I’ve been to all of her shows. That was the best one ever!!!! Everything was hot!!! The set design was awesome. This was a show for the diehard fan. I sang ‘Younglove’ as a little girl in a talent show. I went crazy when she sang it. In this trying time, I was concerned about spending the money but I have absolutely no regrets. I NEEDED THAT ESCAPE.
Thank you so much Janet!!!! Much love!

Janet was great as always…she’s an awesome performer. The concert was disappointing because LL Cool J was not there!! What a rip-off!! Also, the rescheduling messed up a great weekend I had planned before. Finally, a little sad that the arena wasn’t filled to capacity.

I don’t know what concert Keith was at, but I couldn’t have been the same Janet Jackson concert I saw last night. She did an amazing job as usual!!! This is my second Janet concert and I was impressed that she still had dance moves down after so many years have passed. She preformed every single hit she has had throughout her career. I was so happy she did complete songs and she didn’t cut the songs off after the first verse. Vocally she was great. I LOVE YOU JANET!!! Best wishes with the rest of your tour.

Stop the Press!!! Thank you, for letting me have a voice!!! Let me just say that this is about the 5th time i’ve seen janet in concert. Superb shows in the past!!! But, this time, Wheww!!! Please let me just say this! Fire him, fire him, fire him, whoever choose those gaudy show suits, set that stage set up, thought of the outer space theme and especially, who ever thought to put in that raunchy, over- the top, cover your children’s eyes (and adults too, for that matter) sex show that was soooo beneath Ms. Jackson, (way too talented to have to do the sale sex thing). Disappointed yah, but I still love Janet, and hoping she will estimate herself just a little bit higher and come back again, and value just plan ole talent!!! And she’s got it!!! Just need to stop listening and hanging out with you know who…shorty~~~ ok, mr. dupri! Demand your respect Janet, if you don’t no one else will!!! (Mr. strip club himself) If not, you just become one more of his lap dances, if you know what i mean.

This concert was AMAZING! I had been wanting to see Janet ever since The Velvet Rope Tour and I had never gotten a chance to go until now. She made it SO worth it for me to endure the canceled show, a 4 hour drive, and the cold weather. I loved that she did songs from “Dream Street” and “Janet Jackson” since some of my favorite tracks are off those albums. The choreography was on point, the stage was awesome, and the set list was definitely thorough. Although I will admit that I only liked two of her costumes, I still wish I could see at least one more show…if not I’ll definitely be ready for the next tour! Keep doing it big Janet!

Well… after waiting for an hour and a half for something to happen, at which time I was beginning to get pretty P**, the show was ok. I wondered what was the purpose of having a producer boyfriend if he can’t help you replace an opening act that canceled? Go figure…
It was terribly hard to understand most of her vocals. But, I guess if you are a diehard fan you already know them and that wouldn’t have mattered to you.
The hair was…well.. not attractive, the costumes need to be redesigned to hide NOTICEABLE sweat pockets and the acoustics were..off balance. The videos that aired between costume changes were mumbled so it was hard to understand what was going on or what the plot of the whole story was.
I thoroughly enjoyed her dancing and dancers. They were full of energy and kept the crowd going. It was the best part of the show! Kudos to the choreographers!!!! I thought her body was AMAZING!! No one ever complains about Beyonce being voluptuous! WORK THAT BODY JANET. Overall I’ll give the ENTIRE experience a B-.

The show was great. I have been a JJ fan since I was 7. Ahh Memories. She was awesome. She did all the moves from her video way back in the day. How many artist can do their old moves as they age older. Not many. She get props from me. I am glad I went. It was the best concert I have been to in awhile that was like live action entertainment that with a artist that has real talent unlike these wannabe acts these days. Also the s*xual scene, Janet as always been doing those in her concerts were you folks been. It is too hilarious the guys that get brought on the stage and how they react that is pure entertainment at its best. LOL
For the people that are hating on Miss Jackson body. One question for you, How many 40+ year olds do you know with bodies like that? Stop being so jealous you know you would kill for a body like that. She looks good for her age. I hope to look like that when I am 40+
Keep doing what you do Janet. You go girl. Janet fan for life.

Hello, I was at the show! I am sorry, but I expected no negatives in your story and was surprised that the innovative mohawk was mentioned as a problem look? I also loved the costumes because they were fan inspired. Fans sent her those ideas. She also did gowns. Janet never does dresses.
As far as the show itself. It was mind-blowing! Even her on brother would truly have to take a backseat to her latest style. Yes he can sing, but he has not been able to reinvent himself like she has done. The stage we awesome and competitive. If Cher does something close next year, she gets an Emmy, but Janet gets criticism. True fans love Janet and this show was hot!

The concert started out with high energy…and didn’t stop! Janet Jackson has always been and will continue to be a force to be reckoned with in this music industry…DEAL WITH IT!!! People who leave negative comments..are simply haters. Why would you pay big money to see someone you “kinda sorta” like. I could see if the ticket where $10..but they where $100 and up! I wouldn’t pay that kind of money to see NO ONE unless I really liked em. So those who had negative things to say…simply just wanted to be heard. If you where in that audience…you felt the energy of a SUPER STAR!!! WORK Ms.JaNeT!!!!

I was sitting in VIP lounge and the whole group of VIP’s were cool and they seem to enjoy the show by dancing and letting loose.
Even the Mayor was moving lol BUT look I work concerts for a living and so far I must see over 30 concerts a year from Vegas to LA to the NYC so far this year Janet had the best stage set and the best lights, sound, I have seen in the past few years, and Gil (her lead dancer) and the rest of the dancer were on point.
To put on a show at this level in 2008 is very hard with people losing their homes, jobs, etc. it's hard to fill up a concert hall 100% !!! I just got back in town from seeing Mary J. Bilge at the Palms on the 17th of Oct and flew in to see Janet even Mary J didn't fill up the small Palms concert hall BUT she put on a great show and gave 100% !! At the half way point she (Mary J) said, with so many options for people to do and see it was good for you guys to choose to see me she kept saying thank you for coming out to she her. With that said, that same night Justin Timberlake,50 cents, and others had shows that same night all up and down the strip.
The point is people aren't going to spend their $$$ like they use to, so for Janet to almost 80% fill up the concert hall is a good thing. Janet did this tour for her fans she had her fans write in to what songs outfits you name it for her to wear. Just like Kanye West have said, in the past and WHY he don't talk to the press about his shows he said, HIS SHOWS ARE FOR HIS FANS !!!! and they get it !!! they ask about his space ship etc. etc. So, Janet did her thing and the TRUE Janet fans get it !!! and enjoyed her show.Peace

Drove down to ATL from Louisville, KY to see Janet and she didnt let me down!! Loved the show, the song list was amazing and she was flat working it! I’m so glad she chose to do some of her old song tracks for the fans. Thanks from all the old timers!

I enjoyed the show, but thought that it lacked what the Velvet Rope tour had. The stage looked cheap, her costumes were not what I expected, and the one dancer spinning on his head was cocky and annoying. At first, he was cool but got redundant.
I was disappointed she didn’t do: 2nite off of the Discipline album, Throb or Because of Love off of Janet, or I Want You and R & B Junkie off of Damita Jo.
I love her, and am one of her biggest fans. I was excited that she played songs from “Janet Jackson” and “Dream Street”.

The concert was great!!!!! I do think that Janet is pregnant and I am happy for her! Everyone keeps focusing on her weight gain, take a good look at your body and make some changes for yourself. Everyone sitting in back of me was fat, and had the nerve to be talking about her weight. She danced her ass off and she is still the best female performer to hit the stage.

Janet’s concert was amazing. The production value is incredible. Most artists don’t put this type of energy, effort, or creativity into a show. This is what sets Janet’s concerts apart from any other artists. She gives you your money worth. Her voice was great, she’s sounds just as angelic in person. Her energy level outlasted the crowd. Everyone stood for nearly 21/2 hours. Her entrance was hot too. There something special about seeing a veteran artist, especially when you grew up watching them in your teenage years. Janet rocked it!!

I also wanted to add how WELL Janet sound live. Many artist have NOT been successful at that task and for her to sound so good AND dance for 2.5hrs was just AMAZING!!! I hope she makes a DVD of this concert (Hint, Hint). The song selections were on point. Also that Arena was damn near FULL, way over 50% and everyone was there to see JANET only!! I had to get that off my chest. I know that at some point entertainers hang up their hats but I hope you’re not even thinking along those lines Janet!!! You are one of my top 3 favorite artists of all times. I’ve been one of your biggest fans since the 80s and I hope you continue to do the great job you’ve done up to this point. I hope all goes well with the vertigo and continue to take care of yourself. You look Fantastic AS ALWAYS!!
JD…I hope you’re doing my girl right!!! I think you are, she looks happy :)
Till next concert Janet!!

Janet’s shows are always phenomenal, from the staging to lighting, dancing, and pyrotechnics! The Rhythm Nation Tour has always been maintained as the best, in which Janet has stated this as well, but its focus was more socially-conscious of the world and military-inspired. Whether Janet experiences weight gain or not, it’s something many people go through, yet she STILL is an exceptional entertainer with a vision and insight on her strong fanbase! Being 42 has nothing do with anything, for as beloved late singer Aaliyah always sang, “age ain’t nothing but a number”. Age involves genetics and how well you take care of your body, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Madonna is a prime example of that (concert due at Philips Arena Nov. 24) for at 50, that woman’s appearance is great, her body is agile from her workouts and her dance moves are fierce! So, from Janet to Madonna to Tina Turner, who is 68 (Philips Arena Nov. 9), I applaud you for looking fabulous at any age and showing us all that it can be done! Superbad women that inspire!

I have been to all of Janet’s previous concerts. I have mixed feelings about this one. I never, ever, thought I would live to hear myself say…I enjoyed the set, theme of Janet’s concert more than watching her perform! Yes, the show was AMAZING, yes she did her thing. To be honest, I found myself feeling CONFUSSED. I soooooo understood the space theme, but the outfits turned me off, the hair was odd, and she seemed slow to me. Oh, she did dance, but, it just appeared as if she was going through the motion. As if—she was not feeling her own show. I have never, ever left a Janet show…feeling just okay. I also think the white brite large, round lights in the back, on the bottom, were too STRONG. It blided me from seeing the some of show. Anyway…I’m still a fan, and will by the video/dvd when she records it.

I have been waiting to see Janet Jackson since I was 7 years old, I am 26 now. I was never able to see her because I never had the money. So I was determined to see her by any means. I was broke but I scraped up the money to see her. I came to the concert alone and I had an awesome seat as well (Section 4, Row F, Seat 1)!!! Ms. Jackson is my absolute favorite female entertainer ever,(her brother and Prince are my favorite entertainers ever).
The concert was AMAZING!!!! She sounded spectacular. I have never seen anyone dance and sing at the same time so effortlessly. She looked absolutely beautiful. When I see her in the magazines, she always looked beautiful but to see that she looks that beautiful in person is mind blowing. I do not think that she looked fat whatsoever. Her body is beautifully proportioned and in the words of one of the individuals who commented, “no one ever complains about Beyonce’ being voluptuous”, why should you complain about Janet being a “Coke Bottle”. Who in their rational mind wants to be “rail thin”. Hell not only do I wish to look as good as her at 42, but I wish to look as good as her now at 26.
It seems like people forget that Janet is a SISTA. She will always have hips, thighs, and booty. I am happy that she is with someone who appreciates her for who she is no matter how thin or how voluptuous she is. And from this it shows that she appreciates herself and is comfortable in her own skin. Her self-esteem is high and it will continue to be because she is in a very loving and caring relationship.
JD, continue to treat my sista Janet like a QUEEN that she is.
This is the best concert I have ever seen. I haven’t been to many, (2 to be exact, Janet’s makes 3). I must say that her showmanship is impeccable. I loved how the stage had a huge square platform that let Janet come close as possible to her fans and it seemed that because of the platform, everyone had a great seat. She is truly an entertainer who really cares about her fans and that is why she is so loved!!
Janet, I will continue to pray for GOD to keep his loving arms around you and your loved ones and may you continue to be healthy. Do not stress yourself or work yourself too much because Janet, you are a treasure, you need to be around.
P.S. (1) Sonia Murray, baby doll you really need to check your facts. Philips Arena was not half full(50%), it was damn near 80-85% full. Times are hard these days and money is very hard to come by and for all the people who did come to the concert and for Philips Arena to be damn near sold out for Janet’s concert, shows true dedicated fans coming to see a truly dynamic entertainer. So instead of hating on Ms. Jackson give her her props.
P.S. (2) Janet, I think you JD need to go ahead and get married and “put some beans in that oven” LOL. Have at least one baby,Janet. LL, sorry we didn’t get a chance to see you, I hope you come back!!
MUCH LUV,
A JANET JACKSON FAN FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!

I loved the Janet concert. Yes her hair and constumes were different but it is called a show people!!! and for everyone talking about her size does it matter???? She did an amazon job with singing and the dancing. Most of you talking were tired and you were just singing and dancing in your seat. I mean give the girl some credit, she did just get out of the hospital!!!!! I will continue to support Janet and can’t wait until her next CD & tour. GO JANET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, but was it just me or was the set with Discipline mind blowing? I couldn’t believe she did that. THe girl is not shy at ALL! I know JD is like McDonalds….. He’s Loving it!!!!!!!!!! lol
