Young Jeezy and OutKast on Michael Phelps

41701320.jpg

jeezy2.0928lv-1.JPG

First, there was a mention.

Now, there just might be a meeting.

History-making Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps’ (top picture) has told a number of media outlets that Atlanta rapper Young Jeezy (below) is in heavy rotation in his iPod.

In fact, in a New York Times article Monday, Jeezy is cited as one of the eight influences for his record-breaking eight gold medals Phelps won in Beijing. (The Jeezy single “Go Getta” - with R&B singer R. Kelly — in particular).

“Phelps and his American rival Ryan Lochte, who is also a fan of Jeezy, greet each other by saying ‘Juh,’ in homage to the rapper, a.k.a. Jay Jenkins,” the Times’ Karen Crouse writes.

Now Jeezy tells us that Phelps’ “people” have been in touch with his “people” about the two being officially introduced.

“It would be great if I could holler at Phelps,” Jeezy said during a break from his nationwide promotional tour for his upcoming CD, “The Recession”. “And it’s a compliment that that man found inspiration in the music I do for the streets over here, over there in Beijing”.

(It would also be quite the picture seeing Phelps — pride of the red, white and blue — next to Jeezy, who’s “Recession” promotional materials include a black and white-striped flag, and T-shirts with “My President Is Black” on the front.)

And Phelps’ Atlanta Music Scene inspirations doesn’t stop with Jeezy. According to Yahoo! Music Usher (“Burn”) and OutKast (“Roses”) are also on Phelps’ Top 10 playlist.

D3_2607.JPG

Both Andre “Dre” Benjamin and Antwan “Big Boi” Patton of OutKast (above, in their movie “Idlewild”) said they weren’t aware of that until we told the history makers in their own right. (They are the first rap group to win Grammy’s top album of the year prize).

“Ha!” a delighted Benjamin shot back in an e-mail. “That’s great to know!” added Patton.

And what OutKast songs do they think just might motivate other athletes during the rest of the Games?

No 1. “B.O.B”; 2. “Gasoline Dreams” 3. “Bust” and 4. “Git Up, Git Out,” says Patton.

“Oddly enough,’So Fresh, So Clean’ is a good one,” Benjamin replied. “Yes, [‘B.O.B.’] is another one. A rare OutKast track [on ‘Stankonia’] featuring Cee-Lo called ‘Speedballin’ is another.”

What OutKast songs have this kind of effect on you? Or are there other local acts/songs that you help you focus for competition (or just the daily work-out)?

I don’t listen to much rap, but I am a fan of some songs. Phelps or the artists he listens to should not be critized for what they do. It’s music people, and if you are so weak-minded as to let music influence you then we need to get you to a counselor ASAP. Parents, raise your children, if you did nothing they see or hear would truly influence them b/c they would know the difference between what’s fantasy and what is not. It’s music, listen and enjoy.

Maybe one day we will all realize that we are not so different (white and black) Its a few knuckle heads out there that keep us in strife with each other but we pretty much have the same wants and desires. It still baffles me that people wont vote for Obama for the mere fact that hes Black….nevermind what he stands for, his policies, his views for a better America…go figure! I hope M Phelps and Outkast/Young J. show America that its ok to be interested in something other than the norm!

Thanks to Michael Phelps for proving that all rap is not “crap” and that the music can inspires more than violence and ignorance, but also legends!

I pretty much love all of Outkast’s records, they are such a unique talent. Look forward to hearing more from them in the future.

@Aaron Got news for ya, rappers don’t mug and or kill folks! Remember, most are millionaires, so money is not an issue! The only time you hear about them in the news is when someone disrespects them or trys to harm them in some way.

Believe it or not, rockers, etc. get involved in as much stuff as they do, but it is not published as much. Rappers are always the target!

@Aaron Leggs, let’s add to your list..

Here are some other famous people facing legal issues, and some who have recently resolved their issues:

Kate Moss

British prosecutors will not charge Moss for alleged cocaine use in a London music studio last year.

Gary Glitter

The former 70s glam rocker hopes to get his three-year prison sentence in Vietnam on a sex charge overturned.

Paris Hilton

Hilton was not charged after a recent fender bender. But she faces a suit after a car registered to Hilton, possibly driven by her cousin in 2004, was in an accident.

Pete Doherty

The Babyshambles singer was fined $1,900 after police found traces of cocaine in his blood following a performance in Sweden.

Richard Hatch

The first winner of Survivor is jailed for more than four years for not paying taxes on his prize winnings.

Michelle Rodriguez

Lost actress Michelle Rodriguez served about 4 1/2 hours of a 60-day jail sentence for violating probation by driving drunk before being set free in May.

Phil Spector

The legendary record producer’s murder trial will likely be this fall. Spector is accused of killing actress Lana Clarkson in his mansion on Feb. 3, 2003

Rush Limbaugh

Limbaugh settled allegations of prescription drug fraud in April 2005.

Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan was arrested in May 2007 on suspicion of driving under the influence. Lindsay crashed her car into a curb - and then drove away. When police tracked her down at a local hospital, they found drugs in her car.

Do I need to dig up more??

Only fitting that Phelps would be motivated by OUR music. WE (you know who I’m talking about) have used motivation to take over ATL and Hip Hop. The 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s in ATL will go down in history as an equivalent to the Harlem Rennaissance. A cultural explosion in Atlanta!

Few will understand, but there is something very seriously wrong with our country when someone awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor gets almost zero accolades compared to someone with Olympic Gold Medals.

A lot of Olympic gold medal winners train their whole life.

A lot of Medal of Honor winners give their life.

First I gotta say Ms. King I loved your comments….it is nice to know that a 49 year person enjoys Hiphop as much as the younger generation. I am 35 years old and I have listened to hiphop ALL my life. I have never robbed, shot, killed, or committed any type of crime ever in my life. I have a degree and work for a very profitable commercial mortgage company. On my drive to and from work, I listen to hiphop just about everyday….from the west coast, east coast, the “dirty dirty”….everybody!! Like it was said before….music does not raise your children, the parents should!! Hiphop is for all races and genders. If you don’t prefer hiphop, thats fine…don’t listen. If u do, great….HIPHOP FOREVER!!!!

@Chris Instead of going back and forth with you I will simply say this…

WE meaning you and I as humans make mistakes, based on our ideals, views, etc. You are not perfect neither am I, so with that said getting in trouble is not a black or white issue, it is a morals, integrity and values issue!

PEOPLE make bad decisions, not just black athletes, rappers, and “leaders.”

The focus will and always be on celebs, athletes, rappers and leaders, esp. black ones, primarily because we still live in a racist society that does not want to see people from humble beginnings succeed!

Now by no means am I excusing ignorant behavior, but more goes on with ALL celebs, athletes, etc. ( regardless of their color ) than what is portrayed in the media! We can continue to point fingers or try to work together for the better of our communities, it’s your choice!

Some have accused me of being “bitter” or something like that but I watched him and cheered him on. I’m glad he won. I just think our country has severely misplaced priorities when a Medal of Honor winner goes virtually unnoticed.

I would just like to see him sitting in that 50 degree ocean water (instead of that warm pool) for hours near hypothermia and see if he “really” has what it takes not to mention all of the other training he would have to pass.

When I heard Phelps listened to Lil Wayne “I’m me” song before one of his finals, I almost fell out of my chair. That’s one of my favorite Wayne tracks and it’s not a main stream hit. That just proves he is truely down with rap music. I love it.

By John, being educated and smart are two differnt things. You may be educated but, Snoop,Jeezy and many other rappers are smart enough to run their own entertainment companies and make millions. Also the young people in white america have been rap musics biggest consumer since rap went commercial in the Run DMC and Beastie Boys days. Rick Ruben and Russel Simmons built rap into the great commercial entity that it is today. Young white, black and all other ethnic groups kids listen to the same music today. Hip Hop is a great influence on much of the pop music. That is why in suburbia all youth of different ethnic groups get along together much better than in years past. They grow up influenced by the same things in popular culture. There is much the rest of us can learn from those young people.

You know, the amazing thing about topics like this just proves that the very things that we feel separates us actually pulls us together!

WE meaning all nationalities, races, etc. have more in common than don’t have in common.

Blacks are worried about crime like other races!

We want great education for our kids like other races do!

We want to live in nice areas like other races do!

We want to attend, as well as put our kids in the best colleges as other races do!

We want great careers and more money like other races do!

Quality of life does not have a color boundary!

I come from the gutter and was a former drug dealer, etc. all before I was 18.

The difference in me and others is that I had a mentor and family who believed in me and pushed me to do better! With encouragement and connections, my mentor gave me opportunity, when I had no opportunity.

I grew up with two parents who lived with me, but we were very poor. With that came opportunities to make quick money and make bad decisions.

Fast forward to 2008. I have received all three of my degrees from GA Tech (Bachelors I.T, MBA, PhD).I am a VP of IT at a major company in Atlanta and most of all, I give back to my former community!

I said all of this to say that folks cannot help where they grow up or who their parents are. Sports figures, entertainers, etc. are products of their environment (mostly poor). Instead of complaining and pointing a finger at their slip ups, bad language, etc. pat them on the back for making it out of a bad situation and turning their lives into something positive!

A person who has not been exposed to educated people or people who speak and teach them the basics of correct grammar in most cases will not speak the kings language, but with that said, many folks have a wealth of education, but don’t make millions of dollars per year or have the opportunities most rappers have! I guess it boils down to what is most important for your situation!

Black rappers and sports figures give millions back to charitable causes, but you never hear about that in the news. Ludacris, Jeezy, Bow-wow,Outkast, T.I. and others have and continue to donate millions to public service, so let’s support positive and quit bashing others to make ourselves feel good!

it still tickles me that people are ranting and raving about how surprised they are that a white athlete (Michael Phelps) listens to hip hop to get amped. What is he like 23? That’s to be expected.. Young America is all about hiphop as a whole (regardless of race)… Now if it was Phil Mickelson getting ready for the Masters, my eyebrows would be raised!

Are we still under the belief that black people listen only to rap and white people only listen to rock & roll..?!

Hey “America,” The even more funny thing is that 70% of you black thugs commenting on here have been or will end up in jail at some point in your lives! HA HA.

That comment won’t stop your sister from wanting to have sex with a “black thug”… Tom. Laugh at that.

My sister huh? Even though I don’t have one right? I don’t associate myself with pathetic people who want to be around losers like you, “KatdawgATL.” What a typical uneducated thug name. Go shoot a fellow brother or something. I am watching the news and would love to see you on there. Without the thugs, we would not have big news in Atlanta!

And somebody remind “America” that 70% of Rock& Roll Blues, and Jazz (which also started with blacks) were bought by whites as well.

Tom, This blog is supposed to be about Phelps and Jeezy how did you get on race. That is the problem with you white people you link everything to race. I’m sure you would love to see black people especially men end up in jail. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN JERK lets face it this is not the Jim Crow days. The white man days of running SH&& is over and like it or not we will have a black leader. Like it or not Rappers like Lil Wayne, T.I. Jeezy, and Snoop have very successful businesses. So get a life take your white sheet off and meet me in the parking lot you gay b*******. How about you look history of serial killers how many are black? Huh? Look at the Enron executives how many were black? You don’t see Jeezy walking around with chains around his neck and black make-up singing suicidal music do you? For all you racist b******* on here burn in hell!!!!!!!!!
