The Black Lips, Dark Meat and AthFest

Dark Meat High Res Photo.jpg

The fluctuating but always sizable Athens outfit Dark Meat.

Georgia bands are really starting to stir things up on a national — and in some cases, international — level. Check out these features on some of our local notables:

The Black Lips have been conquering the world, spending most of their time on the road and gathering a growing legion of fans one darkened dive at a time=. Or at least you’d think that’s the way it happens. The band actually plays in some very interesting places. Check out their interview at Pitchfork. There are a few naughty words, so it’s definitely PG-13. There’s also an interview with the band at MTV’s site. Check that out here.

You’ll also find a whole load of stuff on the Black Lips and their labelmates Dark Meat at the Vice Records site. There’s a link to a very cool iMeem video on sprawling Athens combo Dark Meat that includes a look at the band’s tour bus. The bus, according to the band, also starred in the movie “We Are Marshall” as the team bus.

On an even more local note, AthFest is this weekend. It’s your chance to check out more than 170 acts, most of them based in Athens. The outdoor shows are free, but you’ll need a $15 wristband for some of the club shows. Find more info at the AthFest site. If you go, here are some of the don’t-miss-’em highlights:

Blue Flashing Light (3 p.m. Saturday, June 21, on the main outdoor stage)

Hope for agoldensummer (11 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at the Melting Point)

Dark Meat (9:10 p.m. Friday, June 20, on the main outdoor stage)

Morning State (7:25 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at DARC Recording Studio)

We Vs. the Shark (midnight Saturday, June 21, at the 40 Watt Club)

Modern Skirts (9 p.m. Saturday, June 21, on the main outdoor stage)
