T.I. Gives First Concert Since Arrest
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
When Hot-107.9 announced it had booked Atlanta rapper-actor T.I. for its 13th Birthday Bash this Saturday, it looked like his scheduled appearance at Philips Arena would be his first since he was arrested last October for, and later pled guilty to, federal gun charges.
But D.C. beat his hometown to that, by days.
MTV.com is reporting that T.I. did a 90-minute set at the nightclub Love this past weekend, opening with “Help Is Coming”, “Top Back” and “Rubber Band Man”; including one song from his upcoming CD, “Paper Trail,” “No Matter What”; and wrapping things up with “Big [Expletive] Poppin’ ” and “What You Know”.
(Notice all of the enthusiastic women up front, in this picture from the show by Sydney George).
“He’s still got it,” T.I. reportedly said of himself. “I can go all night with all the hits I got.”
Planning to be there Saturday night when T.I. performs at Birthday Bash? Think he should edit himself when he raps now - especially the gun references- considering the trouble he’s in? (Fair warning - he is no way censored in the YouTube clips below).

T.I is the True King of the South and he will rise back up from what he had to go through. Motivation will lead us all through this time in crisis were all going through with gas and jobs and all the rest were going through. People throw money at this guy Truth B Known cause he speaks the truth and tells people whats up on another level you could never imagine. He does things to make himself who he is..He donated a lot of money to Katrina was the first one to stand up to help out. What have you done to help this world and your community besides bring other people down with your nonsense comments?

Shut up Gail! You would not understand what he raps about anyway because you never lived that life or come from the places and seen the things he have seen. People kill me commenting on things they know nothing about. You don’t even know him personally to be making assumptions about what type of individual he is.

Gail grow up and walk out your front door into the real world instead of having your head up your ass. If you actually listen to the lyrics he speaks the truth about life and what goes on in life. Just because he’s BLACK with a white-t on doesn’t mean he’s some thug. This “thug” yal call him is out there doing stuff yal wish you could be doing. Quit hating on the man!

I was born and raised in Liberty City (miami). They used to call it Bomb city back in the days because brothers use to burn it down everytime a cop beat up a black man.But i still refuse to refer to my people as n****. I just can’t do it.Miami is as black as it gets. And i went to a all black high school. So i am Black brother. Don’t get it twisted. But i will not use the white mans hateful vile language on my people. An then say its a term of endearment. Never. We need to stop it. Now thats some blackness for yo ass fool.

I think this is the best free entertainment I can get. People should worry about what THEY do and what THEY say. T.I. is just a man and he is no better or worse than any one in their own lives… Start being accountable for yourselves and stop being so critical of others..Grow up and mind your own business!!

Like it or not T.I. is an artist and he expresses his art in the form that suits him. Walk a mile in this man’s shoes before you judge him. I also have to agree that he has given back to the community many times and still is. He is growing and we all make mistakes. I just dont understand why we must stand back and throw rocks as if we have not baggage. Everyone can not sing/rap about dancing in meadows and such. Some of us live in the real world and life my not be or have been that great. If you look at other writers and poets they speak of turmoil but because they say it in a nice way its ok. True art is when it is spoken from the heart. No Matter How You Speak It.

Brother TI, you need to listen to a wise ol’ man. You need to lay low until you deal with all these charges.
Gettin’ out there and flaunting it all is not the way to please the judge and the prosecutor.
So tuck it in and behave yourself.

Like it or not T.I. is an artist and he expresses his art in the form that suits him and also purchases guns in a way that suits him vs. the way that suits the law.
I think most consider the current rap as not being an artform but a money making scheme to take advantage of young easily influenced kids.

Damn, people! He’s an artist by profession, so he’s working. What’s wrong with that? He’s trying to get it all in before he does his time. Wouldn’t you do the same thing if you knew you had to serve a year in jail next year?
By RH
June 11, 2008 2:58 PM | Link to this
He should be in jail and not on stage. He is a convicted felon for Pete’s Sake who should not even be buying 22 caliber weapons much less automatic weapons and silencers.
Give me a break

June 11, 2008 3:22 PM | Link to this
He’s performing on stage. BIG DEAL. Just because he’s a convicted felon doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be allowed to continue working.
If you don’t like T.I., then why waste your time posting on this board? Makes absolutely no sense to me.
The real reasons alot of these people are complaining about him is because of the slap on the wrist he received in his gun case and also they can’t stand to see a so called “thug rapper” continue to get the admiration from “their” children that they wish they received themselves.
I’m not saying you have to like T.I. or hip hop for that matter. But at least respect him as a man first and foremost and respect that he is making a living that alot of your children and YOU for that matter are supporting.
Thank you.

What are you talking about. You want me to respect a conficted felon drug dealer and illegal weapons owner who raps about disrecting people all the time.
You are out of your mind.
I own nothing of T.I. and I am pretty sure posting on this board does not benefit him financially. I would support a petition to lock his little butt up though. The judge who sentenced him should be banned from practicing law. T.i. has been given more shots a freedom than most Americans ever will and he spit on everyone’s face that gave him a 2nd chance.

I don’t dispute the fact that yeah, sometimes I’m outta my mind, but this isn’t one of them.
I do agree that his sentence was too light. All I’m saying is people should respect the fact that he is making a living. He WILL serve his time later on next year.
But for right now he is a free man and we all have to just deal with it.
By RH
June 11, 2008 4:03 PM | Link to this
Yeah, we do have to deal with it for sure. I question every single dollar the man has made because most of it has come from either selling drugs, trading weapons, or rapping about exploiting women and glamorizing violence and drugs. I am sure he has done some positive in his life, but so did Manson.

Sonia Murray knows exactly what she doing by always creating blogs on every black artist. last week it was Monica and many racist made comments. Now today it’s T.I. and Janet Jackson….Don’t you guys realize that the AJC does this just to spark race debates?

CLR - I just happened to read the ajc and saw T.I. performing on stage vs. performing in CB4 and saw a blog below the article. I started reading and saw how many distorted perspective there are on T.I.
There should be no confusion. The man has made a living on being a criminal or exploiting women and chidren.
Personally, I think it is time to stop glamorizing it and speaking against it. It has nothing to do with my cornflakes.

Eric,
Do you think it might just happen to be that T.I. is a black artist who happens to be from Atlanta who has many ties to Atlanta and there are many feelings about T.I. due to all of those ideas I listed. Do you think maybe T.I. made the paper because he was performing again and has been part of a huge national story buying illegal guns right before a national televised show?
Probably not, I am sure it was Sonia trying to start a racial debate between online bloggers. LOL.

I just think it is funny how 3 out 4 people on this blog support a criminal and his actions and basically label him as a hero and those same 3 out 4 people also think this blog was racially motivated.
There is a pattern here, but I just don’t know if any of the T.I. apologist will see it.
By RH

Really? I think there are a lot more black artist in Atlanta than white artists. Maybe I am wrong, but that is the impression I get. I can name 10 black artist and not 1 white artist from atlanta right now off the top of my head. In addition, the black artist’s music is more geared towards the people who are likely to actually blog, so I can totally see why AJC would push subject matter that actually interest its readers. You see it as racist; I see it as common sense business.
So maybe the AJC should start putting content out that no one gives a crap about so they can lose their ratings to other local news sources so no one can create off the wall conspiracy theories about the AJC creating racially charged blogs. Funny but the blogs today have very mixed topics and do not focus on color, but I guess ignorance is bliss.

Atrocious!, I can’t imagine where I’d be if I tried to buy an a** of automatic weapons…probably doing the mandatory five years that the feds give for that crime. I wouldn’t be out flaunting my criminal lifestyle, that’s for sure. Something is surely wrong with this picture.

Jay,I appreciated your post. You are spot on. Eric, I’ve gotta agree with you too bro,the AJC does this EVERY DAY and just pulls us all into it. Strange. Must be about ratings or something. Pick a topic you know everyone is gonna chime in on (white people suck/black people suck/Clayton co. sucks) and they count the clicks. Typical ad $ generation tools I guess.

If I were T.I., I would not be out rapping about being a badass & cappin people, this is the kind of stuff that very well could backfire, as far as the judge is concerned. If his pretty lenient sentence hinges on his spending a certain number of hours speaking to kids about NOT being a gang-member, and NOT shooting people, then spending MORE hours, before alot MORE kids, bragging about doing the opposite, is not going to sit well with the judge….
Since Sonia writes about music, her area of focus is rap, hip hop, & r&b, and this is an Atlanta paper (with many big-time rappers living here), it would be highly suspect (& I’m sure there’d be plenty of complaints) if she DIDN’T write about predominantly black artists, no?
That there are racially ignorant rants & name-calling, using her columns as the “reason of the day”, is hardly her fault, but just a sign of the times. Rap and race are both issues that, like politics & religion, often bring up deep-seated fears & vitriol.
