Island Def Jam Responds To Janet

114048_Entertainment_Weekly-1.JPG

Yesterday Shane Harrison reported here that part-time Atlantan Janet Jackson is unhappy with how Island Def Jam has been promoting her current CD “Discipline.”

(Read where she said it HERE. )

And today, we’ve got a response from the record label: “Unfortunately we haven’t experienced the results we would have liked with this new album, but we respect and support Janet,” said an IDJ spokesperson; adding that it had worked three singles from “Discipline” — “Feedback,” “Luv” and “Rock With You”.

(Jackson says it only got behind “Feedback,” the first single from the CD current sitting at 194 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart. It’s sold 392,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan).

In other Jackson news today, the European leg of her Rock Witchu tour has been scrapped; again, reportedly due to poor promotion.

Doesn’t quite feel like she has a lot of momentum going into her first tour in seven years, does it? To what do you attribute this lackluster showing? (V-103’s Frank Ski - who predicted this would happen - noted this morning that Janet needed to “touch the people” more). Think she and her Island Def Jam exec boyfriend, Jermaine Dupri, (above) will bolt this label like they did Virgin?

I heard two singles from the CD, and almost threw-up. This is by far the worst material Janet has ever done. She’s a has been, and everybody knows she’s only with JD to use his pull in the industry. Wake-up brother!!

With the price of gas and food steady going up, who in their right mind would buy a whole cd? Just do like every one else and go to itunes and download the couple of good songs and leave the rest.

Some artist don’t know when it’s time to leave the stage. Janet, stop trying to be a kiddie. Enough of the hip hop techno stuff. Become a Diva and act your age. Go to the Vegas stage like Celion Dion make your millions singing your prior hits and call it day.

Janet needs to grow up. Her music is played and she’s played. I USED to love Janet when she reinvented herself for her janet album, but what grown woman still sings about touching herself while she’s talking to her boyfriend or clubbing?? Janet’s original fans have kids, mortgages, careers, etc. and obviously she didn’t get the memo that err’body else grew the hell up. I’m glad I burned Discipline instead of buying it. The electronica sound doesn’t do it for me and there’s only 3 songs on there I can stomach.

What is wrong with reading information like this?? This is news….its ENTERTAINMENT NEWS. Its a refreshing change from “who got shot”, “who got robbed”, “how bad the economy is” and “how high gas prices are”. Those are all depressing topics. Is there anything wrong with covering news on the lighter side every now and then???

@ERIC

I don’t think this is rascist. I did not know that Janet even had a CD out? How does it sound? I think someone already said it wasn’t that good. But I do agree that when people are washed up like Monica, you should just leave them be instead of run them into the ground.

Janet’s not 24 anymore and neither are her fans. And repeating the word “sexy” over and over and over and over as she did on that first single doesn’t make it so… it sounded a little desperate and sad. She’s definately a great entertainer, but just can’t compete with Beyonce, Ciara or the other young hotties. She should stop trying. If she did something really unexpected like a jazz album or smooth R&B and I’ll bet she’d get a lot of attention and sell a heck of a lot more CDs.

Janet - is HOT!

I heard “Feedback” and thought it was a great dance song!

The problem is, it’s a dance song. Folks don’t go clubbin’ to get sweaty and work on their dance moves any more.

Too Busy tryin’ to be seen.

Most of the songs being played are by rappers who are men - and MOST of THEM ARE FAT!

When is the last time you danced through a whole RAP SONG?

Janet needs to a show in Vegas like Toni Braxton and wait until - DANCE MUSIC is really DANCE MUSIC AGAIN.

janet is a part-time resident of one of the music industry’s hubs, i.e. atlanta - has she considered a local label with local production - the things she needs in order to be successful are right here in the city - a major red flag is jermaine’s unwillingness to put her on his label but that notwithstanding she is surrounded by talented producers, dancers, singers, musicians, you name it - plus several local radio stations that cater to her format - she needs to stop digging around nyc, l.a. and europe and embrace what exists right here in the ‘A’

Maybe it’s because Janet’s music over the past few years shares little in common with the Control, Rhythm Nation, and janet. albums that the public actually liked. It’s all hyper-breathy, hip-slop with no hooks. Those albums were full of powerful, sexy and danceable tracks. Her last few releases have been more plastic than the discs they’re impressed upon.

Sad to say, I used to be a real Janet Jackson fan. But didn’t hear one song on this album that even made me want to go buy the single on Itunes, much less the entire CD.

Janet, get a clue and stop letting your man produce your albums. You are not that talented of a singer, you are an entertainer. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis understood that & knew how to market your type of voice. Jermaine Dupree is talented but not talented enough I guess to recreate you as he did Mariah Carey - but the difference there is Mariah can really sing it was just a matter of time before somebody brought her back to life.

Sorry Janet. You need to beg Jimmy & Terry to take you back on as a client & produce you a hit before you are a complete has been.

This is a classic example of not mixing business with pleasure.

She needs to get back with Jam & Lewis and actually let them them their jobs. She starting going down when starting trying to write and co-produce her records. Jam & Lewis are still writing hits for Yolanda Adams and other artists. Jermaine can’t do anything for her artisically.

Atlanta may be a music hub, but I read two or three times a year of artists who either live and start off here, or move here, eventually move out of state to greener pastures. Atlanta is NOT Los Angeles, it is NOT Las Vegas and it is NOT New York. Face it.

Janet may have a point here. Even though I feel this album could be way better, the promotion was terrible. Look at Mariah’s promotion for her current album. They changed the lights of the Empire State Building in NY the announce here album release. That’s CRAZY!!! Janet barely got air play.

She should focus on acting.

It saddens me to hear some of the things you guys have said about Janet. I have been a Janet fan since the first album, and I see prgression every step of the way. Im one of those people with a career and family etc etc, and I think her cd is off the hook…much better that some of the music being played by SEVERAL other artists. I think some of you need to take a step back an re-listen to the cd. I think the CD is HOTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!! Also - EVERY SONG on the radio is about LOVE and Relationships and SEX…HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, why cant she sing about it - she is EXPERIENCED in all of those aspects and can put it down better than any of the youngins that have come after her. Before you talk about anyway in a negative light, take a look at yourself and see if you have accomplished ALL of the things that JANET JACKSON has done - NOT A DARN THING!!!! LUV - Mike :-)

I think Janet needs some new direction with her music, but she will have to be the one to make the turn. As for competing with these so called divas of today, I say why waste your time. Aside from perhaps Jill Scott and a couple others, not including Beyonce or Ciara (who is actually more dancer than singer). The music of today is simply rehashed, revamped, rip-offs of the music from 1950 to now. Everyone already knows Rappers do nothing original, but there are quite a few R&B personalities guilty of the same thing. I am not so arrogant enough to think that my one opinion of Janet’s talent or lack thereof to some, is the end all, be all of her career. I simply say, SPEND 6 MONTHS CLEANING UP YOUR OWN BACKYARD, AND 6 MONTHS STAYING OUT OF YOUR NEIGHBORS YARD…you’ll find your time and your year completely filled.

JANET you are still great! I can’t wait for Oct the 5th. There are several songs on Discipline that I enjoyed. Was this the CD I was expected, no. However, I don’t understand all the hatred. Today you have people with less talent, no appeal and they lack charisma; Yet, people flock to them like flies on shyt. I just don’t get it! And I don’t care to understand the stupidity of the world today. Janet continue to do your thing, you have nothing to prove. I agree Def Jam did not do anymore for this CD, than Virgin did for the last two CDs. Def Jam and Janet should’ve agreed on a CD that they both could support whole heartedly. If Def Jam had doubts they should’ve scrapped the CD and made Janet start fresh.

The next thing I need to say is, “who gives a damn about Frank Ski?” That is the real question! I really cannot tolerate Frank Ski. He is over opinionated and he’s just a jerk. Frank has beef with Janet and he hates on her at every opportunity. Except of course, when she’s in his face or on the radio. I wonder how it feels to have people loving YOUR show, but only when your OUT ! I stopped listen to V103 between 6am-10am b/c of Frank Ski.

Miss Jackson has a new CD out?

Will she breathe all over the microphone? Will she talk in between tracks?

How about production…will it be over-mixed and produced to death, with a wall of sound or tired hip-hop beats drowning out her reed-thin voice?

How about the baby talk? Will there be more baby talk?

Has she had some voice lessons? No?

Will there be a video?

Will she do some of her 25-year-old choppy dance moves? Will she have cobra neck? Sling her hair around?

Like, oh my God…I musn’t have it.

Janet has been an icon for awhile…growing up I cannot tell you how much I loved all of the albums she put out. But when she left her bread and butter (jimmy jam & terry lewis) everything has gone down the drain. Jermaine Dupri and his production literally drowns her out; she has a very different voice from Mariah Carey and simply cant cover the type of range it would take to make Dupri’s stuff sound legit. I don’t know if she left her production team on a bad note or not but if she wants to get her game back, she needs to get them back as well.

Yes, I agree. Janet should go back to Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. She needs her original producers and management. Leave Jermaine as your boyfriend. Janet, This is directed to you. I am a fan, have always been a fan and will always be a fan. I think the problem is you let Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis go. Together the 3 of you were pure magic. I still exercise to ryhthm nation. It gets the blood moving. In fact I play your 10 year album while on the elliptical. You are still sexy as hell and no many 42 year olds can look you or move like you. So,please don’t listen to these haters. Just go back to your roots and you will get the results you want. As for Jermanine….he is a sweety…but his work does magic for Mariah. It is not working for you. But we still love him. Janet has been black balled since the Super Bowl incident. The Karma surrounding her is just bad now. People never forgave her. It’s sad. She was reacting because of all the criticism pointed at her brother about those kids.I don’t think she meant any harm. She chose the wrong venue to vent. It’s sad. The other reality is you have to have hits. Janet is not really a singer so she can’t bring out c grade songs and make them a grade like Mariah. The tracks for Janet have to be vicious and hipnotic. Terry and Limmy would be better for her. But it will still be hard because of the Super Bowl incident. Most of her record buyers were white. That is were she miscalculated. Black people usually don’t buy records unless the artist can really sing. No disrespect but she is gimmick pop. Not real soul music. You cannot fool black people on music. Many of her fans could sing better that she can. There are a thousand girls in the so call hood who could blow her away. Trust me. You can’t fool these kids. They know when you can sing and when you faking.

I’m not surprised about the poor cd sales. Her last truly great cd was Janet, almost 13 years ago. From there it has been a long slow slide to this. Frankly, people have moved on with their lives while ahe is still stuck in the RN mode. I first saw the Feedback video and laughed because I knew this would bomb. I don’t think anyone is really hating on Janet. Everyone loves her, but it’s time for her image to be recreated. JD can’t do it because he is just so stupified with her that she lets him breathe the same air as her. Her singing and hip-hop moves are not what a 40 year old beauty like her should be doing anymore. She should move on and catch up with folk who “brung” ya.

Janet is over 40 now. Her era is the 90’s early 2000’s. This is Beyonce era. Teenagers feel like they are listing to their parents trying to be hip when buying Janet’s CD’s. If she waits couple of more years the 90’s will make a come back like all past decades and she will be back in style again.

You know I am sick of all you JANET haters. She is one, if not the best pop artist in the world. Trust me, Janet is not with Jermaine to boost her career, babes it’s definitely the other way around. Janet was a mega star before she even start dating mini mouse so don’t get it twisted. She’s made over a 100 million dollars, stop hating on Janet………………..

On her worst day, she outdances any of these young stars, so don’t trip.

I bet all of you haters, will be right there at her concert. Love her, don’t hate her!

Janet has had a much longer career than most 80’s artists. OF the BIG groups to come out of the 1980’s she is not doing so poorly. Madonna, George Michael, Prince, Whitney, Mariah - none of them sell like they used to. Of course same goes for REM, Tom Petty, Springseen, Elvis Costello, all who have released career worthy CDs in the last 12 months (IMO) People in their late 30 - mid 40’s (these artist’s true demos) do not buy as many CDs as they did when they were watching MTV in their teens and 20s. R&B is even more about young people than most genres. I think Janet will have to make an album for people her own age…but then again who is going to play it?

Janet needs to just do the old school tours. She seems too untouchable to get out and hustle her own CD. Maybe if she did interviews, performed on shows, go to the cities, somebody would feel sorry for her and buy her stank ass album.

I admit, I thought Janet had a babyish voice and couldn’t sing until I was home from school one day in the late 80s/early 90s and heard her singing on that show, Fame. That’s when I realised that she actually has talent.

I don’t know what she’s been up to lately, and I don’t need to know, but I like that song “Luv”, even though I can hardly understand what she’s saying. I wish she’d enunciate more.

She needs to learn from somebody like Madonna… REINVENT yourself. Remember who your fan base is.

You can’t try to compete with the younger singers; their fans don’t really know you. YOu are somebody they associate with their parents.

Janet has the beauty to die for. As far as her artistic talent, unfortunately I must say she sounds almost like an American Idol auditioner. Doesn’t matter if Jermaine Dupre produces her, it might as well be Moe, Larry and Curley. Wasn’t her last failure at Virgin Records and Virgin decided not another dollar was to be spent to produce and promote her, and that’s why JD severed his comittment with them?

Discipline isnt her worst album, but the sales are indicative of her losing her fanbase over the years.

I dont know if Terry and Jimmy are still the answer for her or not, but clearly the musical product represents a decline from the standards they set with her.

Discipline works in the stripclubs, but not really in the IPOD or in the ride…….I know stripper music is selling in most of the ATL, but its not been good for Janet…..she needs someone else to paint that “sexual edge” portrait in her next effort. JD aint doing it for her.

Do some Club appearances, look at Debra Cox, Robyn S, so many laydeez that always get coin from the disco dancing, music loving, diva worshiping Sister Girls…Your biggest competition will be when DQ runs footlong specials and the boyz get confuzed.

JANET THERE IS ONLY ONE PROBLEM, PROMOTION!!

THE RADIO STATIONS ARE NOT PLAYING YOUR MUSIC BACK TO BACK LIKE THEY ARE PLAYING MARIAH. I AGREE WITH YOU!

I HAVE BEEN FORCED TO LIKE SONGS THAT I INITIALLY HATED, JUST BY HEARING THEM OVER AND OVER.

YOUR AUDIENCE IS OLDER, BUT U SHOULD STILL BE ABLE TO MOVE RECORDS.

YOU HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE BARRY GORDY PLAY BOOK, AND GET THE MAJOR STATIONS BACK IN YOUR POCKET.

BEFORE YOU RELEASE ANOTHER ALBUM.

THE SONGS ARE GOOD, ITS PROMOTION!!!

PS. SONYA MURRY YOU ACT LIKE YOUR ON SOME PERSONAL CRUSADE TO TEAR THIS WOMAN DOWN, AND FRANK SKI THINK YOU CAN PLAY A SISTA’S RECORD INSTEAD OF BEING A PINT SIZED HATER!!

All I can say is ‘WOW!’

First of all let it be known that I am a die hard Janet fan. She is and will always be one of my favorite artists. If she sells one or one million records I will always be a fan!

So much that I agree with that others have previously stated, both positive and negative. I do have to agree that I think that her main downfall is that she is trying to appeal to the youngsters and they think of her as ‘old, washed-up, and a has been.’ These are words that my 11-year-old step-daughter used. This younger generation just doesn’t know who she is and what she has accomplished in the music industry.

Janet, if you ever read this, know that I will ALWAYS love you! Like I said earlier, if you only sell one record know that I bought it! Much LUV and continued success in whatever you persue!

Janet is an artist; this cannot be denied. The problem she faces is that her music has not evolved. We understand that her latest is about sex and love. But, that’s it. Yes, she looks good for her age, but think about her longevity. She doesn’t have any. You cannot blame the Super Bowl incident for the music that she is releasing.

I have every Janet album she has ever released. And I have to say that since janet., there has not been another stand out album. She needs to evaluate and reflect and get herself back on track.

On another note, Atlanta Radio Stations are the worst in the country! 94 and Q100 claim to be top 40, but they are not! They play the same music over and over and over again. Corporate radio is why I bought and listen to Sirius over five years ago. Satellite radio plays what it wants without restrictions!

Janet is no longer relevant in music. She was never a talented singer, she just had good production and a lot of help from the studio. Frank Ski is very phony! He is probably really happy that Janet is having trouble! He is very hypocritical! He always play artist’s like (Soldier Boy) who is a very triflin’ person (just REALLY listen to his sexually explicit lyrics), then Frank Ski turn right around and have “inspirational vitamin”….Frank Ski you can’t have it both ways! Then I heard him once on V-103 talking badly about Lil’Wayne because one of his songs on his new album is ‘allegedly’ suicidal….Frank Ski had the nerve to compare Lil’ Waynes lyrics to that of Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur before they were killed and tried to say that Lil’ Wayne will be next!

V-103 is self entitled as “The People Station” and it should be titled “The Phony Station”..because both he and Wanda are VERY PHONY! That’s why I REALLY don’t listen to their radio show…it just so happens that I was at work listening to it when he was commenting on Lil’Wayne….

janet jackson hasn’t had a hit album since “janet.”, and with jermaine dupri whispering in her ears about how good this or that sounds, she won’t ever have another one. doesn’t she know that love and business doesn’t mix? besides she doesn’t have the voice to match the music that she’s trying to put out. she needs to go back to what made her famous, and quit trying to cater to younger generations who don’t care about her music.

I’m really feeling the comments Ive read on Janet..she really should keep her boyfriend out of her music(but its always appeared to be a pattern with her). Its very evident that his impact on her musical career is becoming a liability much like the impact Bobby had on Whitney during their time together.I completely agree that Jimmy and Terry set a standard for her that she has not maintained since she last worked with them.I felt like she took that movie role in the Tyler Perry movie as an attempt to reconnect to fans unfortunately the movie did not do as well as expected.I don’t think she should just go and set up for vegas but she does need to reinvent herself. She is still a great entertainer but she needs Jimmy and Terry to give her strong production that fit her voice and sound.Regarding V-103,after my initial move to Atlanta in 2001 the primary reason I stopped listening to V-103 was Frank Ski’s morning show..I felt like he was trying to hard to be something he just wasn’t.

Personally, Janet’s last 3 cd’s didnt do it for me..I still love Janet because she gives me hope that maybe the music industry will turn itself around….The music industry doesn’t give credit when credit is due, and prides on promoting junk,i.e Souljah Boy…and all the rest of these horrible, no good songs that are messing up the minds of the teenagers today. Instead of what’s good, its all about what will bring in money and a quick sell. And while there is nothing wrong with that, let’s put our money to good use. My suggestion? Janet needs better producers…J.D. is just not cutting it anymore…if she gets a good producer, then she will be back to the Rhythm Nation/Velvet Rope days…..

And by the way, Frank Ski is the LAST person to talk about anyone and their music. He doesn’t even know what good music is, as much as he talks everyday about NONSENSE….not to mention he’s the biggest hypocrite ever.

It’s all a bit ridiculous don’t you think?!?! Janet is not Madonna and even Madonna is not Madonna anymore at the age of 50 (yes, in August she will be). Prince is 50 and doesn’t have the sales he used to, but he is very talented and knows how to work what he has & is still a great draw for his longtime fans. He’s current, but certainly not 24 anymore (Purple Rain 1984). However, he is still hot, his music is different BUT he doesn’t have to compete with 24 year olds or anyone for that matter since NO ONE can touch him and he still puts on the best show I’ve ever seen & he’s not afraid of his past (mixing the new stuff with the old favorites) to remind us why we loved him then and will continue to. Janet needs to realize she’s at the point where she is older, her singing is lackluster and starving herself to keep her weight down and killing herself to dance is ridiculous (you know she has to soak in the tub after all of that just like the rest of us 40 somethings). She needs to reinvent herself. I can’t stand one more article on her diet secrets (starvation & paying somebody a truckload of money, give them a key to her house so he can literally drag her butt out of bed and p** her off to make her work out - she said it not me). She doesn’t have to be a size 2, but VERY few women’s bodies stay the same size as they get older. She loves to eat. She was (somewhat) innovative when she started 20 something years ago, but now forget 20 something, it’s teenagers (like Rihanna who started at 17 with Jay-Z) who are cornering the market. I think the reader who said she should do like Celine Dion and go to Vegas. Even Toni Braxton did that and made a lot of money. With a husbad, kids, a mortgage, REAL work, and a normal life, I can’t quite get excited about a 42 year old woman who has more than I might ever have upset because her fans grew up while she tried to stay 20. In your own words Janet, What Have You Done For Me Lately? She was on the Steve Harvey Morning show with her last cd and she sounded so uncomfortable around Black people. She is NOT an around the way girl regardless of Jermaine Dupri.

I think Discipline is one of her best albums but it is dance music and young folk don’t dance the way they used to. Younger women dance by themselves or with other women. I do think the record company could have done a better job promoting the album. The young people(people in their 20’s) that I talked really liked the song Luv and Feedback but like someone said earlier bootlegging is how some folk get their music and Janet was not getting any airplay on the hip-hop stations which really surprised me.

First lets get something straight. Janet is a monument in this industry. Second, she should be able to make her music. Just because some of you didn’t like it, what makes you think that everyone else should feel the same way. I happen to like Janet and feel that if she puts out a good album great, if not hey you know what, she can brush herself off and try again. THATS WHAT YOU CALL A FAN.which she has alot of. alot of people that think she should quit-Nobodys’ payin you a dime for what you think & oh by the way if you feel she should quit so much or you hate her album-why’d you click on this story again.

I think the 392,000 Janet sold is impressive considering people don’t buy music. An artist is good to sell just a couple thousand. Everybody is downloading or buying bootleg. I think the reason Def Jam isn’t promoting is that they don’t have any money. All the layoffs they did is definite sign. Not to mention all the other top artist they have on their label they are not promoting. that companies going.

Janet is a monumental disaster. She hasnt learned where she fits. Now 10 15 years ago she was awesome. She had an audience that she was able to maintain with. Maybe she has always been this lost soul that hid behind a lot of success. She has gotten used to the hype and its sad becuz when u are GENUINELY talented it will sustain you. I never understood an artist that let records sales determine whats a great album.. Janet GO SIT DOWN.
