John Mayer coming to Encore Park

Alpharetta’s Encore Park is moving beyond its “golden oldies” showcase for contemporary shine when singer-composer John Mayer visits the outdoor stage this summer.

The acoustic crooner will play the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park on Aug. 29. OneRepublic, who has had hits with “Apologize” and “Stop and Stare,” will open. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday though Ticketmaster.

Mayer launched his career playing nightclubs in Atlanta, and releasing his debut album “Inside Wants Out” in 1999 on an indie label.

Two years later he burst onto the major label scene with the platinum-selling release of “Room for Squares,” with Columbia subsidiary Aware Records.

The album, and two singles — “No Such Thing” and “Your Body Is A Wonderland” — made it into Billboard’s top 10, and “Wonderland” earned Mayer a Grammy.

His smooth vocals and affinity for acoustic melodies and full-blown rock bands made him a fan favorite.

Mayer’s debut album was re-released on Aware, and the follow-up U.S. tour produced the concert album “Any Given Thursday.”

In 2004, Mayer dropped “Heavier Things” with more platinum sales, featuring the Grammy-winning single “Daughters.”

Taking time off from recording, Mayer stripped down his sound and traveled the country with bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan as the John Mayer Trio. The sold-out 2005 concert produced the live album “Try!”

“Continuum” was released the following year at No. 2 on the Billboard chart, and winning two Grammys for best pop vocal album and performance for the song “Waiting For The World To Change.”
