Rate T.I.’s New Single
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Atlanta rapper-actor T.I. has made good on what he told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution weeks ago in his first sit-down interview since his arrest, and subsequent guilty plea on firearms charges— today he released a new song on the site he endorses, streetcred.com.
At the time he wouldn’t go so far as to say “No Matter What” is the first single from his September CD “Paper Trail.”
But it is the first new recording from T.I. (above) since he was arrested on gun charges in October, hours before the BET Hip-Hop Awards.
And without being specific, he deals with that situation, over and over:
“I did a song to make it known that the king lives on, pimpin’,” T.I. says in one line.
“Facing all kind of time, but smile like I’m fine.”
Then the chorus goes: “I ain’t dead/Naw/I ain’t done/Naw/I ain’t scared/ For what?/I ain’t run/From who?/But still I stand/Yeah/No matter what people, here I am/Yeah/No matter what, remember
“I ain’t break/Never/ I ain’t fold/ Never/ They hate me more/ So/ Yeah I know/Ha-haa/So here I go/Yeah/No matter what shorty, here I go/ Ha/No matter what shorty”
What do you think of “No Matter What”? Is it what you want to hear from T.I. now? Does it sound like T.I. of old?

Wow, I’m disappointed. I was hoping he would wise up and at least attempt to create something positive since he has been blessed with freedom. I hope at some point during his community service term he uses his talent and position to make a difference and positively affect the lives of the kids (or adults) that look up to him.

I’d say his is pretty positive music, you must keep in mind who he is talkin to, mot a room full of 40 year olds- the message is not bad at all.

First of all Critics are just what they are…..
As for T.I. great job you are doing what you are suppose to do, so many have taken Hip Hop out of context. Meaning he has taken a situation that he has and is dealing with and made other people aware….u know what don’t hate HATERS be proud that he has made a way for his Family….

I’m a 33 year old educator and mother of one. I love the single. I think it is very positive. I hate that I’m no longer teaching middle school because is definitely something I would have my students listen to. After listening, I would allow them time to discuss some of the things that T.I. addressed as well as bring in issue pertaining to their own lives. I encourage parents to listen to this song with their children and discuss it. Allow your teenager to open up to you and tell you how they feel. You might be surprised.

WHY is this NEWS AJC??? You all should be ashamed of yourselves. You keep this THUG’s name out there as a leading story on the front page of your website. Have you SEEN his rap sheet? Have you SEEN all the guns he was buying? Don’t you remember the shooting incident he’s been in before? Well you SHOULD. You reported those too! You guys are all pathetic. This dude should be in PRISON! You all wonder why the kids consider thugs like this a role model. It’s because you (the media) perpetuate the illusion.

I listened to the single and it is on the positive. I must admit that I like what I hear. Big ups to T.I. He could have put out something negative which I’m sure alot of people would have loved to hear. We as black people will forever be oppressed if we will not help our own get on the right track when they have made bad choices and want change. T.I., if the people in the “A” want to lose out on change, It’s alot of lost and broken young people in Brevard County, Florida that could benefit from your story. We all have one, some just come across better than others.

The song somehow reflects that T.I. is proud of what he did - keeping illegal weapon in his house. The story was that the weapons were for his safety but he had a complete a**. Thats absolutely ridiculous. Also, if T.I. thinks he didn’t so anything wrong, he should have had licensed guns in the first place and not have to worry about his bodyguards or his crew ratting him out. I used to admire T.I. because his music was always different and some of his songs were positive encouraging young kids to think differently. But after this whole situation, his credibility has definitely reduced in my eyes.

Many posters ask the same question —why is this newsworthy? For some reason hip-hop or rap THUGs “stories” or photos appear on AJC.COM on what seems to be an almost daily basis?
Gets to basic question — who determines what is on AJC.COM?
I would assume the readership of AJC.COM, in general, has zero interest in THUG hip-hop or rap “stories”??

Sunshine…wake up. It must be a cloudy day for you. TI was arrested AND plead GUILTY for intent to buy automatic weapons. These are not squirt guns, mind you. They are illegal firearms. There’s only one way he stayed out of prison. He used his “celebrity” status to avoid serving his due time. Very similar to how poor old Dallas Austin had to enlist the help of Senator Orrin Hatch to get him out of prison in Dubai for carrying cocaine. That’s illegal too by the way. People SHOULD be in prison for illegal things.

It’s the same old TI (TIP) that I know and love, I want his behavior to change not his lyrics. TI don’t change the lyrics, they are the lyrics of your life and the life of every ghetto in every city, what makes TI positive…He came out the ghetto, got money, runs a company, and care take of his family and friends.

I think that TI did a good job and not matter how negative this song may have appeared to some of the other people how commented before me, I think that if you just listen to the lyrics you can see that he is still coveying a message of resilence and persevearance - a message that is much needed in the hip-hop culture. I think that its cool how he always manages to encourage his fans and push us to never give up, or give in. At one point in the song he mentioned that even when winning seems impossible, losing is still never an option. I personally thought that this statement was profound and inspiring, even if it was coming from a an unlikely source. But this same tone is present in many of his previous work, such as in the song “Motivation” among others. You just have to take a minute to listen to his lyrics… all of them. Thank you T.I. for continuing to give us good music! God Bless you. -Kisha

Some of the brothers at the Awards show should thank the police because, in my opinion, there was an urgency to get those weapons on the afternoon of the show. Why?
When you’re going to a show where you’re going to receive numerous awards —- why would you want to run over and buy some guns.
That sense of urgency and the why of the urgency is a question that is unanswered and one that the brothers should be concerned about.

T.I.’s message is indeed positive. Positive that you NEED LOTS OF GUNS.
He grew out of the ghetto, with the help of god and LOTS OF GUNS.
You can stay true and never fail, providing you HAVE ENOUGH GUNS.
Never give up BUYING MORE GUNS.
T.I. is an inspiration…an inspiration to OWN A TON OF GUNS.
He’s a successful family man who provides…A BUNCH OF GUNS.
And no, I’m not a “hater”…unless it comes to people who DON’T HAVE A CLOSET FULL OF GUNS. I hate those people.
Keep doin’ what you do, T.I. In other words, STICK TO YOUR GUNS.

To “Kip”. I’m with you. This whole article is just ignorant. As an African American, I am sick and tired of other African Americans placing false idols like TI on a pedestal. Let’s keep this thing in perspective. TI (a convicted felon) was caught trying to purchase illegal fire arms in a parking lot. That alone should have netted him 5 years in the slammer. Have black folks gotten so used to violence and other criminal activity that we overlook/condone it in our community? I know some of you out there are calling me a “hater” but for the sake of my wife, kids and my community I wish this scumbag was off the streets!!! The fact that we glamorize this type of illegal behavior is one of the reasons high school graduation rates are so low. Somehow it has become cool to be a fool. When I see blacks up in arms about what happened to Sean Bell in New York and the ensuing innocent verdict of the officers I cant buy into the argument that the cooks just shot him for no reason. (but thats another story) So blacks keep being ignorant and supporting thugs like TI and when you get a call from an officer, a doctor or a school official telling you your child has been shot or caught with a gun please remember TI and how it was fine as long as he was making (c)rap music. Then I want you to see how the courts handle your case. See if your child get a light sentence because he can rap. I Think Not!!

Live your life right and the opportunities in this country are endless. Now, who wants to give me odds that this isn’t the last time TI will be in criminal court? Anyone? Anyone?? I didn’t think so…

I am so sick and tired of people judging hip-hop as if it’s some type of disease. If you don’t like it, don’t listen. If you don’t like the fact that the AJC writes article about this man ( or anyone else) don’t read them. It’s that simple. None of us are judges. It’s not our business how he got the deal he got, he got it- end of story. Most are so quick to point the finger- He’s a thug, he should be in prison, his music is crap, what kind of role model is he- stop it. My mama always said when you start pointing the finger at someone else- there are four more pointing at you. We have all done some dirt, something immoral, and dare I sayillegal. The difference is that a lot of us haven’t gotten caught. He got caught and he is going to do his time, but that doesn’t change the fact that this man has a fiance and some mouths to feed. Music is his job- he has a fan base- what did you expect him to do? Start recording gospel albums or classical music? The single is not bad- the message is not negative. What I got from it is that he is going to stand tall, deal with whatever comes and make the best of the situation. What were some of the rest of you listening to? His music is no worse than some of the rock, alternative of sex and booze filled country music that I hear and that some of the other kids are listening to. But I don’t hear you saying anything about that. Leave this man alone- let him live his life. I mean- * what he eats don’t make you S@#$*- right?
By TEE
April 29, 2008 4:51 PM | Link to this
kip- you are so full of your own BS, it’s a wonder how you are able to eat anything else. There is no need to be wary of him- I have NEVER heard that he shot or attempted to shoot anyone. Maybe he just like guns? It’s a possibility. Maybe it was for protection- you don’t know- your not him. And I read someone say that he was involved in another shooting incident. GET IT RIGHT- someone shot at his ENTOURAGE after a show striking and KILLING his best friend- T.I. didn’t shoot at anyone! I’m sorry- but random people gunning for me because of my success might make me buy a gun or two too- illegal or not. My life is more important. Now kip- you tell me if you were in that situation- would you take measures to protect yourself? Your family maybe? Or would you with your ever law abiding self just HOPE that the authorities would catch the perp?

To Tee: I understand TI has a fiance and kids to raise…Many of us in the community have wives and kids but it makes our job harder as parents when we have idiots like TI running around here doing illegal things while the media and the black community hold him in high esteem. So I guess what you are saying is I should give this guy a pass on what he puts out for public consumption because he is just doing is job? I want you to use that same logic (or the lack there of) the next time you feel another black man is “harrassed” by the cops and the rest of our community is screaming racism.
And far as his new single being positive (I really don’t think it is but for the sake of looking at it from his supporters point of view I’ll go along with it) are we suppose to forget all his past transgressions and the negativity he has brought on our community just because he has made a so-called “positive song?” What about the countless other derogatory songs he’s made that has negatively influence someone’s child. should we give him a pass on that too? If you think we should give him a pass you are blindly mistaken and I desperately hope that you are not one of the ones casting votes for our elected officials (ie, Clayton County school board)

You are right to a certain extent. You might not here complaining about it in our community but i am willing to bet that there are parents out there that won’t allow there children to listen to that type of music.
On the other hand, that type of music is not what’s influencing young black kids in the community. When I go to my corner store I dont see 18 year old boys trying to imitate marilyn manson, or billy ray cyrus. I see them trying to walk, talk and behave like thugs. ie, TI, Trick Daddy and the rest of the low life idiots who poison our community.

MusicEd- You are twisting my words- I am not saying to give him a pass on anything- of course not. I clearly said that the man is going to do his time- he has not been given freedom. He is going to prison- it may not be under the terms that SOME of you agree with, but he is going all the same. He is going to pay his debt for breaking the law- who are we to say how much he owes?
And as far as your little “harrassment” analogy- There are crooked people everywhere- cops included- that power trip on their authority. I want you to thank about this- I have blacks, whites, latinos, and asians being “harrassed” by the cops and I think it’s wrong. I wouldn’t call harrassment doing your job- just like I wouldn’t call his gun purchases doing his- his music however is his job and that is what i was referring to.
As far as his single- the message is not negative, but his music is not for the kids either. If you don’t want your kids listening, pull the plug. I have an 11 year old son, and his radio listening is VERY limited. Right now he thinks Hannah Montana is that chick, which is where he should be in life- so I am doing my job as a parent. I’m not so naive as to believe that he is not exposed- but ultimately the job is up to his father and I. The countless other songs that he have made that are not child appropriate- were not for children and PARENTS should be controlling what kids are listening to. That is the real problem in not only or community- but all communities- stop relaying on the community to raise your children and do it your damn self!
People NEVER forget the bad that he does- but have you even TRIED to focus on the good? Of course not- that would be too much like right! Do you even KNOW the good that he does and how he truly gives back to his community- no you do not- so your focusing on the negative parts of his life ( or anyone’s for that matter) is actually equal in my eyes to his negative act.
And I as far as you hoping I’m not casting ballots- you would love to say that I am part of the problem- but you can’t say that. I am young, married, successful, and a contributing member of society and the black community and I raise my own kid to boot. I am very aware of political issues from the national level to the county level and just maybe if their were more parents like me in Clay Co.- they wouldn’t be in that mess.

Wow- I went typo crazy on that last post, my bad.
MusicEd- You are not going to see those kids in our community because they are in their community. I went to school with all nationalities and I saw the imitation of plenty of celebrities in all cultures.
Now I agree with you- I see the same thing in my community too- but if you go to the corner store and you see kids hanging out and attempting to do what they see in the videos and emulating rap stars- the question would be where is the parental intervention? I wish my son would leave my house with his pants hanging off his waist, I wish I would hear him talking the way that some of his peers ( and mine ) talk. I want him to attempt to drop out of school or to bring home anything less than what he is capable of making in school. I wish someone would tell me my son was clowning in public- I would bet you my house he wouldn’t do it again. We as a whole have to stop letting, cd’s, music videos, and T.V., raise these kids- we have to do it. We can’t blame anyone who happens to be a rap star, or whatever- it’s not them- it’s whoever is sprouting these demon seeds.
Like I said- I agree with most of your points- I just don’t believe that these rappers are responsible for the digress in our community. the lack of family structure is however.

TEE: Your kids are lucky that they have both a loving mother and father. I also applaud you for being a responsible parent but what about the children without parents? What about the children whose parents are addicted to crack cocaine. The same crack cocaine rappers like TI admit that they sell (or used to sell) while they were in the “hood”? The things you defend TI on are the things that are destroying our community. But hey at least your kids are ok!!!

Sometimes good people do bad and wrong things, just like bad people sometimes do good things. You can’t judge the person but you can judge the act and the act was wrong. and he is old enough to know right from wrong. I don’t think he is a bad person though.. just made a stupid decision like we all do sometime.. but if you don’t learn from your mistakes and start changing your ways then you deserve whatever punishment you get if you continue doing the same things.. TI is blessed to be where he is in his career just like a lot of these rappers and what they should do to show God that they appreciate his blessings is do right, give back, and be positive role models to those that look up to them.. that’s saying thanks God for what you have done for me.

I heard it on the way home yesterday. As a long-time T.I. fan, I honestly didn’t like the song. I thought it was contrite and placative. And I was a bit disturbed by the afterthought shout-out to God! The beat was just okay, the message, at best, tolerable.

Well label me a hater Yes, I hate the fact that our kids (& some parents) are ignorant. Yes, I hate the fact that many of them can’t read, write OR talk properly and see no value in education. I hate the fact that keeping it real has been reduced to keeping it real dumb. Yes, I hate the fact that after DECADES of struggle and sacrifice by our ancestors to provide equal opportunities, our youth today walk around with their pants at their ankles. I hate the fact that we belittle our women. I hate the fact that so many can only find value in material gains and thus, have no self-worth. Yes, I hate the fact that our MUSIC which was once a strong focal point in black culture, has now been pimped by the system to create a generation of lost, mindless, careless and senseless individuals. I hate the fact that you don’t have enough sense to realize the genocide right before your eyes. Yes, I am a hater…and will forever be F’N PROUD of it!!

MusicEd- That is where you are twisting my words- I am not defending what he did in the least bit. It was all the way wrong- not a good example at all. But I am responsible for showing my kid ( not kids ) the good and bad and showing him what type of examples to follow and who should and should not be looked at as role models. No entertainer should be looked at as a role model in my eyes- now some of the things that they do ( humanitarian work, etc) can be looked at as good examples of people making right choices, but they are still not role models. They entertain for a living- we don’t really KNOW what goes on in their private lives.
Now as for kids without parents- I could write a book about that one. My husband and I are very active in a youth program designed to provide extra love, support, and guidance for children and teenagers in these trying times. It is something that I pride myself on- helping others. You see- my kid is not the only one that I am worried- I help others also. I can’t save them all and neither can you. I do what I can though. You think that we need to stop the “crack cocaine” rappers from doing what they do and telling their story because it is poisoning our communities. Well- what if we stop these low-life, uncooth, uneducated, unwilling people from creating lives that they do not want to be responsible for? But we can’t censor reproduction- can we? No-we can’t. Now kids who have lost parents to illness, or accidents- different story altogether. But the one’s that keep procreating with no clue- that is what I call poison.

The title of the column is Rate T.I.’s new single not Rate T.I. as a person. The single is Hot no question, this reminds me of a Trap Mukiz track. I get soooo sick of people talking about how rap is negative, rap is violent. Life is a mirror of art & life is negative & violent. It’s just that some are real enough to put in out there for those who bury their heads in the sand. T.I. is a man who is imperfect, who makes mistakes, who is emotional, who has a fmaily to protect. It just so happends that he was blessed with a talent that puts him in the public eye. He didn’t ask to be a role model that role was given to him and the sooner he recognizes that the better off he’ll be.
Keep yo head up TIP and a middle finger to the haters & the APD.

Well Fulton- T.I. has a song called “Motivation” in which the first line is Hater, get on your job and you seem to be hard at work. I think blaming the music is cop out for black folks. Genocide? Ok. Music didn’t destroy us- we did. When I say we- I mean all of the parents that fit the description that you provided above. Music has never done anything to influence me- and I assure you I have heard it all. And if you believe that music is the reason that the black community is up and arms- all I can do is shake my head. The real issues are being completely missed- that is where the problem lies.
I remember being in the 8th grade and Bone Thugs and Harmony had just dropped their debut album. I heard the song on my way to school ( yes on the county school bus ) and I decided that I would buy the cd with my baby sitting money since I had gotten a cd player/radio for Christmas. Well my mom took me to the mail and I went right into the music store and bought the cd without my mom present. When she asked me what I had gotten and i showed her- she marched right to the music store, returned the cd, tore the staff a new one for selling a cd with the parental advisory sticker on it to a minor, and then proceeded to tear me a new one clean through Cumberland Mall! My PARENTS censored my exposure and taught me right- that’s the way that it should be.

Please keep in mind, I’m blaming the ills of society on TI, not at all but, I do feel that as a whole, we have lost the ideals that were once a staple of our culture; education, family, personal growth. Those that came before you have laid the groundwork for you to succeed and you have the same responsibility for those that will come behind you. Almost every other culture survives by this code. Jews, Orientals, Latins, Africans, mostly work hard to educate themselves, improve their situations, support their kind & even send money back home to others. That is what has been lost on the new generation. Unfortunately, many have brought into the I’m gonna git mine mentality and that’s not what it’s about. Sorry, but I’m down with Cosby, Arrington and ANYONE that wants to CHANGE the direction we are heading in. Keep being a dumb_** SHAWTY, see how far it gets you…

@STL2ATL- You are right- the song is hot. And your also right about music is a mirror of life. The stuff that these rappers talk about IS REAL- maybe not in everyone’s life, but it is in someones. The things that they are speaking of were in affect long before rap even hit the streets good- so who did we blame before the rappers?

Yes music does have an influence on our society.. I am a single mother of a teenage son who never had a father around. I moved out of the hood when he was 7 to the suburbs.. to a very nice neighborhood so that my son could have a better life. I raised him in church and did not allow any negative rap songs to be played in my house. I preached education, responsibility, good decision making daily in my home. i even censored friends. I kept him in sports from age 7 all through high school. My son still found a way to listen to rap and i seen first hand the influence rap had on him and his friends despite my best efforts. I see it in the way they dress, the way they talk, act. They tried to emulate these rappers to the point where my son went and got tattoos depicting the lyrics of a certain rapper. i won’t say the name.. I have overheard he and his friends talking about certain rappers gloryfying them and singing along to their lyrics and making up rap songs themselves with similar lyrics. So yes, the influence is real.. and we can be the best parents but you can’t stop the influences all the time.. My son made good grades, never missed a day in school though and is now in his first year of college.. Music influenced me growing up.. but it was good music.. it was good clean hip hop.. so why wouldn’t it influence this generaton of kids.. it does, I’ve seen it. Just like reading positive books can influence children in a good way.. listening to negative music.. any type of music can influence them in a negative way.. Thats why I pray!!!

Same here juswannasay. I and so many other parents I know, both single & married have done everything you mentioned to educate and keep negative influences from our kids and yet, it still manages to seep into their lives. Why is that battle being lost? Because as human beings, anything you do on a regular basis will eventually have an effect on your mentality When you continuously listen to loud and mostly negative music, how can one expect a positive outcome?

I don’t want to make this a black/white thing, but fulton black people have had to fight for soooo many years to just get an ounce of respect & the minute something bad/negative happens rap gets blamed it’s sad that many have adopted this I gotta get mine because if the raw deal they were delt, it’s not an excuse but reality. Many have people of all backgrounds have delt with injustices at some point of their lives, but it’s funny how is happends a lot to minorities.

That is exactly true. and my son heard that weekly in church about what you listen too, watch and speak… anything you practice daily you are going to perfect. It will become habit.. whether good or bad. As a kid I hated reading.. but my dad made me read everyday and it became a habit and now i love reading. There is nothing positive whatsoever rapping or singing about sex, drugs, money, calling woman b’s and h’s, etc… not even when you sprinkle it with a few good lyrics.. Even these lyricist know their music is influencial.. just listen the song that says “don’t this song make you wanna jump”… A friend of mine before playing a basketball game would have to listen to rap music real loud to “pump him up” he said… Gospel and praise music makes you wanna praise God.. right.. so the opposite will do the same.. nuff said..

I just ran into T.I. downtown and honestly, I was excited, because I am a HUGE fan of his. But I just shook his hand and kept moving. He’s not surreal, he’s human. His music or any rap for that matter is used in the same format as a novelist or a playwright or a screenwriter of autobigraphical stuff. Same way you write a country, rock, or r&b song. Writers write what they know. It’s probably a good catharsis for him. I am glad he’s being so transparent. So real. Not hiding that yes it happened, yes he’s learned his lesson, and yes he is dealing with the consequenses. It’s going to impact a lot of young people whether us grown folks see it that way or not. AND for the person who said it . .. IT IS IN THE ENTERTAINMENT SECTION!!!
