Sweet (and Supercharged) Return For Sugarland
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In a sentence, it was a hurrah of a homecoming.
From the very beginning as Jennifer Nettles sang the opening lines to “Baby Girl”; to the thunderous applause after the spare plea “Stay”; to the shots of Turner Field, Eddie’s Attic and West Peachtree Street shown during “Who Says You Can’t Go Home”; to the rocking encore - a cover of Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar On Me”, Atlanta country duo Sugarland’s concert Thursday night at the Fox Theatre felt more victory parade than concert performance. Minus the floats and confetti.
“People come up to me and say how nice it must be to be living your dream,” Nettles said before “Something More”. “And I’m telling you what Atlanta, Georgia - I’m looking at all of your smiling faces and you know what I’m saying? ‘[Your] damn right!’ “
Hours before the first of his band’s two sold-out performances at the Fox, Kristian Bush looked around in a kind of awe about what was about to happen.
Sure Sugarland (above) had been nominated for a Grammy, won two CMT Music Awards, a CMA and an American Music Award — but in all of his years toiling the Atlanta music scene, “I have never played the Fox. This is already major, and the show hasn’t started.”
Were you at the Fox Thursday? (See our photo gallery ) How would you rate the show — opener Zac Brown included? Or are you planning to go tonight?

The concert was wonderful. I must say that “Chicken Fried” with the Zac Brown Band and a duet he sang with a female band member was the best! Great job and money well spent.

Sugarland was great for the one hour they were on stage. In my eyes, if you are the headliner and you can’t sing for more than an hour, maybe you shouldn’t be a headliner. Disappointed in the quantity, but the quality was great.

Sugarland rocked the Fox. This was my first Sugarland concert & it won’t be my last. Loved the set list. The energy was great. Great surprise of “Pour Some Sugar On Me” and it worked great!! Thanks for a great night. Wish I was going to be there tonight too.

GREAT show! We liked Zac Brown Band, and loved SugarLand. The audience was on their feet the SugarLand set. Yes, nothing better than SugarLand LIVE. We should have gotten Friday concert tickets!

Great show……I LOVED Irreplaceable and hope it’s on the next album. I was a little disappointed that it wasn’t a little longer. I’ve seen them multiple times at Variety Playhouse and loved every show. Being in their hometown though, it would’ve been nice to be given an extra special performance. Overall, it was well worth the money.

Agree with Ellie. It was a great set, but too short. Sugarland is poised to move to the next level. I was expecting a set of about 80 minutes and 2 encores —- that seems about right for a headliner. A one hour set with only one encore for your homies in the ATL seemed way short. You gotta deliver for the home town crowd.
Jennifer, Kristian and the band are top notch performers!

Jennifer looked great and Kristian sounded awesome but it was too short and felt very rushed. They should have given their hometown another encore. And where was “Sugarland”???

Jennifer Nettles is amazing!
I have been a huge Sugarland fan for about 4 years, so of course I went to the concert last night with my sister. We would be lying if we didn’t say we were disappointed in the time she performed. I kept standing their after pour some sugar on me thinking.. she’s coming back on right? but she didn’t. Let me say this I saw David Gray at the fox 2 years ago.. I didnt even know who he was but he played for at least 2 hrs

Nina, you captured what I felt —- very rushed. Almost no dialogue between songs, which is unusual for them.
Also, we were on the right about 7 rows from the front and the mix sounded bad there. I could not clearly understand anything that was spoken/sung through a microphone. Anybody else have that problem?

Great show. A little short, but worth it. I’ve downloaded everything by the Zac Brown Band I could find today…

Is it just me, or does that dude in Sugarland get on your nerves, too? He is always grinning like a retard and seems to grimace and contort his face like a rock star, except at inappropriate times. He is a distraction to Jennifer Nettles’ talent.

I found this article when looking around on the web to see if others agreed with me that the show was WAY short. So much fun, so it’s hard to complain … but I told my husband exactly what another poster said: that not only was the show short, but the pace was off. We go to a LOT of concerts, and what the seasoned performers “get” is that a show must have ebbs and flows and highs and lows. Would have loved a costume change prior to “Stay” … a few slow songs and then the fun and frenzied ending. Nonetheless, a great show, and a wonderful introduction to Zac Brown!

the grimacing and contorting is the “Nashville hot-country showmanship”, arg. it’s really odd they only played an hour, in their HOMETOWN, AT THE FOX?!?!? what happened to all their other songs? and ending with some cheesy Def Lep? let me drive home in my b1tchin’ camero… i saw them several times in the early days, so i know they can bring it, jennifer’s got the pipes and the songs -SING SING SING this ain’t no opening set in a shed for the latest goombah in hot country, showcase what makes you different - to the HOMETEAM!!!
so where’s the second night reviews?

I agree, Great show, but way to short. I’ve never been to a show where the opener played almost as long as the headliner. And Zac Brown really rocked. I am a new fan. I was as excited about that as I was disappointed that Sugarland only played an 65 minutes. I mean they played 60 minutes when they opened for Kenny last year.

We really enjoyed the show as well…very high energy. I love Jennifer’s voice and all her songs. However, I was very disappointed in the length of the show…they sang for barely over an hour and that made it hard to stomach the $60 cost.

i saw Friday nights show; I must say I too was dissapointed in the length of time she played. 3-4 more songs would have made it more complete. The pace of it felt rushed-not sure I would spend the money next time.

I believe that the country music industry needs to take a closer look at what they consider country. Sugarland is about country as Def Leppard and Ozzy Osborne are, and there is not enough money in world that someone could give me to go listen one of their songs. Jennifer Nettles voice is like fingernails on a chaulk board to me.

Yes, I agree that the sound quality was poor. I could not understand the words (even the ones that I knew by heart). Why do the bands feel that they have to have sound quantity (blasting loud) and not quality (my ears were ringing, but not with the singing!)

Oh, and what’s that mark on her rt. arm (not the heart tat, but on the top of her arm).. I could see it from my seat and I see it in the close-up pic. here.

I drove from Orlando to see Sugarland in their hometown! I agree with some that the set list was a little short! I expected it to be longer but Jennifer and Kristian never disappoint!! I am a huge fan and look forward to seeing them on the road again soon!

I couldn’t make this show, even though I am a big Sugarland fan — But my main point of commenting here is that I’m enjoying all the positive comments that Zac Brown is getting. I live at Lake Oconee (the area where Zac is from). He and his band are a little secret we have had down here for a while. He owned a bar/restaurant down here on the lake for a few years, and my wife and I saw his band several times there. They are just about friggin’ awesome, eh? Unfortunately that bar was replaced by new condos….but on the bright side it looks like “The Zac Brown Band” might now be on the verge of hitting the big time and getting the widespread recognition they deserve.

We went simply to see Sugarland- it was our daughter’s very first concert.. she’s 8 and knows every word to every Sugarland song. It was absolutely awesome. But I have to say that Zac Brown left us speechless- even our daughter loved them.
I agree I thought the show should have last longer - with either Zac Brown or Sugarland either would have great - we’ll be catching Zac Brown as often as we can!!

The mark on her arm is a birthmark. I agree, the show was too short…especially for the hometown crowd. Having said that, I do love Sugarland and think that they did put all of their energy into entertaining us for the short time they were onstage. I did enjoy the days of Eddie’s Attic shows much more though.

I went to the Thursday night show and to the Friday night show, and the Friday night show was definetly better! I thought the shows both bands brought to the table were no where near what they brought Friday night. I probably wouldn’t pay to see Sugarland again, but Zac Brown is a breath of frest air for REAL country music! I think we all just witnessed a huge beginning for those boys!

I am very upset with the show. I supported Jennifer for years watching her in Soul Miner’s Daughter at the 40 Watt Club and at Athfest playing solo as I’m sure many people did. Our reward for our efforts is extremelly expensive tickets for a ONE hour show. I mean are you kidding me. Think of all the money they made to perform for a single hour. Very upsetting.

Zac Brown is going to be the next big success story from Atlanta! I thought they outshined Sugarland(who I love) all in all. Zac’s songs have that “IT” thing that I think the new Sugarland stuff is missing. Any of the songs that weren’t released on Sugarland’s first album are better than the second one. Kristin Hall made a real difference in their songs but they are still good. I just get tired of all the jumping around. Just stand still and SING!

What they did perform was fantastic. But one hour? That was unacceptable. This is your hometown crowd to start your tour. You have to do better than that. A lot of fans were disappointed.

Really loved Sugarland. Zac Brown’s bass was physically painful- no need to have the bass so loud one fears a heart attack-literally!
