The Academy of Country Music Awards will take place in May, but the nominees were announced today — and Georgia got some love.
Kenny Chesney came out on top with 11 nominations, with the rest of the pack trailing a good distance behind. Rodney Atkins was next with six nods, and Atlanta’s Sugarland tied with Brad Paisley and Big & Rich at four.
Sugarland was recognized in the single record, song and video of the year categories (all for the Jennifer Nettles-penned No. 2 country hit “Stay”), along with a nod for top vocal duo. Sugarland aren’t the only Georgians on the list, though.
Luke Bryan, from the South Georgia town of Leesburg, is up for top new male vocalist. Trio Lady Antebellum, which includes Augusta natives Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley, will vie for top new vocal duo or group.
The 43rd annual ACM awards ceremony, hosted by Reba McEntire, will be broadcast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 18, 2008 at 8 p.m. on CBS.
For a list of all the nominees, check out the ACM site. Then tell us who’s missing — Dierks Bentley, Josh Turner and Trisha Yearwood spring to mind — and who you’ll be rooting for come May.

Good luck all… especially Sugarland! You guys rock. If you didn’t see their version of “Irreplaceable” with Beyonce or “Life in a Northern Town” with Little Big Town, check ‘em out on YouTube. Talk about cutting edge artistry! You all make Atlanta proud.

Being mainly a classic rock enthusiast, I like country music that has a little bite to it — instead of the watered down, popish, commercial stuff that is so prominent nowadays. Sugarland is a great band (although I guess you would call them more of a duo these days). Good writing, interesting songs (and Jennifer Nettles is SEXY!). Little Big Town is another fantastic group (and the two ladies are both from Georgia…so they are kind of a local group). If you like the sound of 1970s style Country Rock, Fleetwood Mac, etc. …get their CDs. You will like them (yes I’m old ….I still buy complete CDs. I do rip them to mp3s, though).
And, it might just be me (I’m a little warped), but I’ve always thought Kenny Chesney looks like that turtle in that old Bugs Bunny cartoon. You know……the one that takes his shell off to take a shower. Think about it.

sugarland doesn’t ‘rock.’ they ‘country.’ ‘rockin’ is stricly limited to bands of the rock genre.
kenny chesnay sure seems like a nice guy. but i’m pretty sure that he is gay. not that there is anything wrong with being a queer country singer. more power to him.
these industry awards sure do highlight the very best in music. it is all so new, creative and totally original. it is strictly about the and has absolutely nothing to do with marketing. the o.g.

I’m sure Kenny’s terrific and all, and I’m happy for him because he write good songs and is a talented entertainer, but I think I’m starting to figure out why Kenny and Renee split. I can hear in his music he wants to be the breadwinner and take care of the little woman (she, of course, not working). What makes some ppl think he’s gay? I’m just curious. Sugarland: maybe my opinion is not fair since I haven’t seen them live or really haven’t heard that many of their songs, and I’m happy for home folks, but I’m just not that crazy about her voice, too hard-edged and nasal, and the songs are either too autobiographical or about adultery.

Congrats to Sugarland and Jennifer! I sang back up on Soul Miner’s Daughter’s album “Hallelujah” (Jennifer sang lead for the band at the time). She is so talented and I’m proud to say I knew her when…

Hey “rocker,” my office buddies and I have been laughing all morning about your comparison of Kenny Chesney and the cartoon turtle! One guy, who has a shaved head, says the conparison is “perfect.” I’m not a country music fan, but I am familiar with most of the current artists.
