Van Halen postpones
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Reformed rock behemoth Van Halen, which recently played at Philips Arena, has postponed Monday’s date at Gwinnett Arena. The band’s show scheduled for the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va., has also been postponed. No word as to the reason behind the show delays, but we’ll post it here as soon as we know.
Promoter Live Nation says that tickets for the February 25 event will be honored for the rescheduled Gwinnett event, but ticket refunds will be available at the original point of purchase.

Hmmmm… how much you wanna bet Eddie and David got in a fight or something? Those are some volatile personalities in that group. Anyone go to their show at Phillips? Was it any good? I may not be a purist, but for my money, the mid-to-late 80s Van Halen with Sammy Hagar was much better. I know that is blasphemy to some VH purists, but I much preferred songs like Why Can’t This Be Love, Cabo Wabo, Poundcake, Summer Nights and Best of Both Worlds to early stuff like Jamie’s Cryin and Cradle Will Rock. Oh, well… maybe someday Sammy and the boys will reunite one more time.

nice job ajc on the photo, show a man at his worst.(no current photos available?) the philips show was great, a few sound quirks. for all the haters out there, you should just stay home rather then complain about every little sound mistake, it’s live music and not supposed to sound just like the album. hoping they re-schedule so i can can catch on the great amercian bands of all time in action again.

Why do people who aren’t VH fans even post here? moreover, why did the AJC choose to put up that horrible pic of EVH on their main webpage? They would NEVER do that to Beyonce or Aretha. If VH doesn’t sell out a 2nd Atlanta show I’d chalk it up to the fact that kids today listen to crap and don’t know what a real concert is so they spend their money on PS3 games, and the fact that Atlanta is marketed as a “mecca’ for African-Americans and blacks just aren’t into rock n roll.

Have to say Dryzzt that Edie has always been pretty homely. This band could have been close, again I say close, to Zeppelin status if they did not have such large egos. I would bet that Eddie & Dave are at it again.
Personaly I think it’s hysterical! They were a good band, but at time over hyped.
Question: If you have two arena’s that seat 20,000 each and you put VH on the left and Zeppelin on the right which one would sell out 1st? This ought to be interesting.

good lord, can we have some topic in this town that doesn’t de-generate into race. one of my best buds and ladyfriend (who happen to be black) both went to the show and loved it. i do agree most of the music today is crap and we are all screwed when these bands get too old to tour. very poor taste with the pic though, right on.

VH vs Led Zep? I’d take the VH over the LZ catalog any day. LZ had a handful a good songs whereas VH has had complete albums full of awesome songs (see VH I, 1984, VH II, Women & Children First) Who would sell out quickest b/w LZ, VH, and Springsteen? My money would be on Springsteen with VH a close second. The Police & U2 tours have all been hyped to death and neither of those bands are all that good and wouldn’t get the same hype if they didn’t have liberal political views. Anyway….rock on VH!

Dryzzt: Incredible hypothesis, but to say that LZ only had a couple good songs is pretty ludicris. VH can’t hold a candle to Zeppelin, but that’s not saying VH is a bad band. David Lee Roth idolizes Zeppelin.
Of course not knowing your age I might understand. If your still in your 20’s you would not be too familar with what Zeppelin has done for Rock.
Just for the life of me don’t say that Alex Van Halen is beter than John Bonham. Anyway, all good fun thanks for the opinion.

Truth is VH flat out doesnt care about the fans. The Philips arena show was absolutely the worst live show I have ever seen, and I have been to hundreds. I think they could be embarrassed by how bad they perform. IF you have tickets for the Gwinnett show, go ahead and get a refund. Even if the show goes on, it won’t be a good one.

DD,
I will say that EVH and Bonham have vastily different styles, I’m 41 so I’ve listened to plenty of both, I’d even put Malmsteen right up there with them. I do think that Roth was a much better frontman than Plant, especially live in concert. I definitely think that VH drew hotter women than LZ, mainly b/c the ones at VH concerts tended to be much drunker than those at LZ concerts.
Yep, all in good fun….we really need another Monsters of Rock tour

First of all, Eddie WAS on crack (actually he was smoking crystal meth)when that pic was taken. Some quack Hollywood guru he was seeing recommended it as a treatment for his mouth cancer, and I am NOT kidding - look it up and you’ll find it’s true. Second, the Van Halen brothers post Hagar are the worst businessmen this side of Enron or the Atlanta Spirit group. They could have done this tour in 1996 and it would have been a monster success, but their egos were too big to make it happen. Instead we got saddled with Gary Cherone a couple years later, and now here we sit having to watch Eddie’s blubberboy kid play bass and Roth’s shiny forehead. I saw them at Joe Louis in Detroit, and they were ok, but nowhere near the band they were with Michael Anthony and Hagar, not even close.

…and let’s get something else straight - VH is one of the greatest rock bands in history, but Zeppelin is THE greatest BAND in history, PERIOD. VH is a California party band that happens to have the best technical guitar player ever. Zeppelin was composed of four of the best musicians the industry has ever known, and did songs that could be classified as rock, blues, classical, country and jazz. THAT is what TRUE talent is all about! VH vs. Zep? No contest, Zep hands down….there will never be another band that even approaches the level that Zeppelin attained.

Re: Giordano, except for Pink Floyd. Floyd and Zep influenced a lot of bands that came out in the grunge period, but Zep and Floyd and I’ll even mention VH in the same sentence just for an added bonus..had their own influences.
VH made it big doing a few reworkings of Kinks songs (Kinks are awesome). Zep and Floyd owe quite a debt to the blues musicians of old. Everyone’s style came to be because of someone else.

There has never been or ever will be a rock band like Zeppelin. To put VH in their league is, sorry, stupid, VH is better than average that’s for sure. Zeppelin set the bar that will never be approached ever!!
Dryzzt: Of course you can have your own opinion and these are just our opinions, but you did not mention Whole Lotta love, Kashmir. Have you really never listen to those songs before?
I can only hope that Zeppelin decides to tour. Even being over 60 and without John Bonham no one can hold a candle to them.

I’m not going to sit here and guess at the reasons why Van Halen cancelled the show. The only people who know that are in the band or with the band. I never saw the orginal VH regrettably but did see Sammys 5150 tour with them. It was my first concert and it was pretty awesome. As my musical tastes expanded with the likes of other rock like Rush and Dream Theater, I still will never forget that VH show. As far as comparing them with Zeppelin, just two entirely different bands. Zep has been around a decade longer, but Van Halen has been making music way longer than Zep since they basically quit in 1980 with Bonham’s death. I love and respect both bands for what theyve contributed to music. No need to fight about whos better. Its all merely a matter of opinion. Peace

I have tickets to Monday’s nonshow. Wanted to see them. First saw VH in 1978 as a backup band for Black Sabbath from 4th row center. VH blew Black Sabbath off the stage - and I was a huge Black Sabbath fan. There just wasn’t anyone playing like Eddie back then. Soon thereafter there were lots of imitators. He had a huge influence on music.
That said, his ego was and is so big that they just can’t seem to get along. He is a drug addicted egomaniac shell of his former self that will have a difficult time ever pulling off a complete tour. Sorry, but true.

I was at the Philips show. I thought the band was great — we all agree the sound was a mess. I followed all the Florida leg reviews and all complained about the sound mix. One commented that DLR had the flu since Atlanta. He cut out the nostalgic opening to Ice Cream Man and seemed unusually raspy. I have his solo stuff on my iPod and he was straining at our show — aside from his earpiece & mic messing up. A Tampa blogger said Eddie seemed to be coming down with the flu. With the two postponements, they have a week off till Mar 3 in Dallas. They seemed genuinely happy at our show and having a good time. I think they’ve been sick and needing a break to recoup. I wanted to go to Duluth but couldn’t work it out so soon after the Philps show. Perhaps the reschedule will open up a chance for me.

Sammy Hagar rocks. 3 lock box is an alltime great album. But Van Halen is not Van Halen w/o David Lee Roth. Eddie’s an egomanic but he created an entire style of rock guitar. Led Z is in another class entirely. 100 years from now there will be a lot more LZ songs being played than VH songs. We all lose with the tour being postponed. I’d love to have this arguement from row 5…hope we get the chance.

To the one that made the racist comment. (Blacks don’t like rock n’ roll).
You’d better learn something about the history of music there, bub. Rock n’ Roll WOULDN’T EXIST if it wasn’t for African-Americans.
