First Taste of New R.E.M. Album
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It sounds like R.E.M. has recaptured their spark.
Just take a listen to the first single from the band’s upcoming 14th album, “Accelerate.” The song, “Supernatural Superserious,” is streaming online at music site Pitchfork.
“Supernatural Superserious” is tight, punchy and catchy. Early reports suggested that the new album would be a return to a rockier sound and that’s just what you get on this first taste. Peter Buck’s guitar has some of the crunch of “Monster,” but without that album’s murky sludge. This is a crisp return to form for our Rock and Roll Hall of Famers. Have a listen and tell us what you think.

I saw it on Pitchfork earlier. It is definitely more rocking but I can’t judge it without hearing it in the context of the entire album. REM’s best work stands up as albums (murmur, Reckoning, LRP, AFTP, etc), not as hits from one-hit wonders that the A&R people manufacture these days.

As long as he’s actually singing and not giving me his political views, I might give the album a try. Otherwise, forget about it. He just annoys me when he talks instead of singing.

From all my contacts who have heard this album… it will be love at first listen. REM is back, they never left for some, but this album will have a universal appeal.

I’ve always hoped they’d get back to their textured harmonies and chordy ballads. They aren’t great hard rockers nor ambience makers.

BiteMe — You first. Enjoy the music and stop whining when people have an opinion.

I agree with Biteme…it’s not whining when you pay 17 dollars for a cd and then listen to a millionaire complain about how bad the world is. The new album has promise as long as Stipe keeps his head out of his posterior.
