Avril coming to Atlanta

avrilphilips.jpg

Pop-rocker Avril Lavigne is playing Philips Arena April 18, and tickets go on sale this Saturday.

The question is: Why does Avril Lavigne seem like so many Saturdays ago?

Maybe it’s Britney fatigue, or that Lavigne’s peers (of sorts), like Christina Aguilera, are becoming better known as wives - as is Lavigne now- and moms, and tabloid staples, but that whole Avril/Britney/Christina/Pink/Jessica Simpson and whomever else feels like a musical moment that’s passed.

Sure, it’s hard to minimize the fact that Lavigne has sold nearly 30 million albums in her three-CD career. Or put the final nail in her professionally when - come one - she’s only 23.

But…Well, what do you think? Does Avril have the potential to transition into an adult recording artist, like Justin? Or will she forever be the “Sk8rboi” girl in your head?

I am a 26 year old male with a 6 year old who loves Avril, for some reason I don’t put her in the same category as all this other nuckelheads

I’m in my 40s and saw Avril Lavigne at JingleJam in December. Her show rocked! To lump her into a group with Britney and Jessica Simpson is ridiculous.

I saw Avril several years ago and till this day it was the worst concert I had ever been to. I think she sounds good on CD but live she isn’t anything all that great.

I’m pushing 40 and I’d like to see her. She is far, far, better than… Britney, who?

I’m 38 years old I love Avril, as does my 12 year old daughter. We rock out together. The difference between Avril and the others named in the article is, she has natural talent. She plays a multitude of instruments, writes a lot of her own music, and has a decent voice. She is more “real” than all the others.

I am a suburban housewife with a tweenager and I confess that I am using my child as my excuse to go to this concert. I love Avril. Avril doesn’t deserve to be lumped into the Britney/Christina/Jessica category. Avril can actually write music and play a musical intrument. Give her a break!

I think Christina Aguilera has a lot of input into her music. She may not be able to play a musical instrument but her songs seem to stick with me more

Now I must say some of her music is not for me but I do not understand why there seems to be so much hatred geared towards her. Even if you do not find her talented she would not be the first untalented person with a record deal.

I agree with other comments here, that Avril shouldn’t be put in the same group as the other singers you mentioned…

She’s got a great voice and loves her fans - she even recorded the chorus of ‘Girlfriend’ in many different languages for her fans around the world.

She’s also involved in helping charities raise money, from selling personal or autographed items on eBay to dedicating her time and talent for charity albums. (When’s the last time Britney did anything for charity?)

And when she tried out something new, like acting or modeling, she does it slowly and takes her time instead of going directly to a starring role (which I’m sure she’s been offered and many other singers have attempted - like Britney, for instance).

Small roles in ‘Fast Food Nation’, ‘The Flock’, and ‘Over the Hedge’ (as well as being in skits on ‘Mad TV’ and ‘Saturday Night Live’) is where she’s started and who knows where that career will end up?

So yeah - she’s awesome. :)
