Kirk Franklin at New Birth Tonight

kirknew3.jpg

Add contemporary gospel superstar Kirk Franklin to the wide-ranging list of performers in Atlanta today to help us bring in the new year.

It’s just been announced that Franklin (above) is performing at the 5 p.m. watch night service at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, at 6400 Woodrow Rd. in Lithonia. (There is another service at 9:30 p.m. )

“We are excited to have Kirk Franklin lead us into worship during our first service as we move into a new season and new day in 2008,” Bishop Eddie L. Long said in a statement released by the church. “God has given me a special word as we embark upon this new and exciting year. I want to invite the entire city, region and state to come and experience Him like never before.”

Again, Franklin joins Georgia jam band Widespread Panic (at the Roxy); R&B vets Frankie Beverly & Maze and Chaka Khan (Atlanta Civic Center); burgeoning local rockers the Black Lips (the Drunken Unicorn); established country talent Miranda Lambert (the Peach Drop at Underground Atlanta); contemporary jazz favorite Dave Koz (Cobb Energy Centre) and local blues power Francine Reed (Blind Willie’s), among others, on this New Year’s Eve bill of entertainment in Atlanta.

Have tickets for any of these events? Oh yeah - think Michael may actually show as part of “the Jackson Five” reunion Atlanta music mogul Jermaine Dupri is plugging at his Studio 72? Or are you skipping what some called “amateur night” altogether, and are planning to stay in the house?
