Locals Rising
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Several of Atlanta’s best local indie bands will play together at the Variety Playhouse on Friday, Nov. 30.
The Black Lips, Deerhunter and Snowden have all garnered international attention and taken their live shows to Europe. Friday’s opener the Selmanaires will hit the road with a vengeance once the quartet’s second album, “The Air Salesmen,” hits stores in January.
Who do you think might be the next graduate from Atlanta’s underground? Manchester Orchestra (above) is one of the up-and-coming Atlanta bands we love. Tell us about your favorite local bands.

Not really local… but a Nashville band that plays Atlanta is great… Edmund’s Crown. Like Cheap Trick meets the Foo Fighters and ODs on early Who and The Beatles.
KILLER power pop - shimmering guitars, pounding drums, great harmonies.
Love them. Drummer is AWESOME.

I like Ethan & the Ewoks and Sun Domingo in the way of local groups. Far-Less plays here a lot, but is from VA, and they’re pretty good too!!!

SunDomingo is great! They’re local guys that friends and I heard in Macon a couple of times, and I’ve seen them perform at different Atlanta venues. Gotta agree with Billy on the Zac Brown Band! — go listen to him play at the Dixie Tavern in Marietta sometime. He does covers, but he also has his own stuff, too.

I’m calling it now… Gentleman Jesse and His Men are the next big thing outta the ATL. Fresh new wave pop cut like the Romantics or Nick Lowe… edgy, driven and catchy as all hell… Last year their debut single made waves among underground internet rockers the world over, sold like hotcakes. Since then they’ve played trendy and taste making rock fests in Brooklyn and SF. Their album’s in the cooker. now if only they could shake off that silly Carbonas distraction that some of the band guys dabble with… sigh…

Who else but THIRD DAY, just the greatest christian rock band ever. From cobb county, two of them go to my church and they were interviewed by 60 minutes a few months ago.

Southside of town: Casting Crowns is a tremendous success and they earn it with great music! # 1 selling album of all music a couple of weeks ago. Northside: Third Day! Totally awesome! Huge success also. Best upcoming band: Flights From Egypt. The lead guitarist and drummer are awesome too! All are Christian bands. Flights From Egypt plays at the Masquerade downtown sometimes.

Written in Red is the best local band I’ve ever heard. They’re in my top 3 for my favorite bands of all time. They are truly amazing and they’re making it pretty big. They’re performing with Norma Jean in a few weeks.

I agree with Billy- ZAC BROWN BAND is the best! He played at my wedding 6 years ago, and he was adored by the children all the way up to my 80 year old grandfather. I also went to college with Zac. He is a down to earth guy with fun loving music that will make you feel young again! www.zacbrownband.com

The Redaction is definitely one of Atlanta’s best. It is indie pop rock with great lyrics. Really radio friendly, the kind of songs you get stuck on and cant stop singing. You can hear their new stuff on their site: www.theredaction.net Love them!

Dear Enemy is probably the next big Atlanta act because they suck so bad. I gauge success that way. The more the band sucks the more likely they are to hit it. The word success contains the word suck. Dear Enemy sucks. Behind them, Fishawk sucks too.
