Sugarland Rising
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Atlanta’s Sugarland is on a roll. The band — Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush — won the vocal duo of the year award at last week’s Country Music Association Awards and their current single “Stay” is a Top 20 country hit. The pair’s platinum sophomore album, “Enjoy the Ride,” jumped from No. 28 to No. 13 on the latest Billboard 200 album chart, likely a direct result of the duo’s appearance on the CMA show.
Now they’ll be performing on the Sunday, Nov. 18, telecast of the American Music Awards show, so they might get another boost from that.
Do you have any special memories of these local musicians made good? Remember a particularly fine Jennifer Nettles Band show, or a fine show from Bush’s days in Billy Pilgrim? Or how about those early Sugarland gigs, when Kristen Hall was still in the mix?

As a fellow Agnes Scott alum Jennifer Nettles holds a special place for me. I so loved her shows at Eddie’s Attic where her energy and soulful voice filled the room. Her songs spoke to so many young women finding their path and dealing with their past. I also fell asleep each night listening to Billy Pilgrim, a little songwriting duo that a good friend turned me on to. Congratulations Jennifer and Kristian!

It is awfully neat watching these two go on to such stardom after spending many Friday nights at Eddie’s Attic enjoying their music. Their passion for their ‘work’ is addictive. Seeing them on stage laughing as they accept awards, I laugh with them as they surely wonder “how in the world did we get this far?”. Congrats you guys!

I too am an Agnes Scott Alum. In fact, Jen and I had many of our classes together (Spanish, Anthropology, etc.).
I remember when Dr. Reese’s Native American Hist/Anthro class went to the Cherokee Mountain Reserves to interview Indigenous Americans and observe some of their culture and history. We stayed in a very beautiful cabin in the mountains. One night, Jen sang and played her acoustic guitar. It was a very special moment. I always told her that when she won her Grammy that I wanted to design her dress. The true beauty is that she is still the same Jen for of us who have known her for a long time.

I’ve been a fan of Jennifer Nettles for over 10 years now. I first saw her one night at Eddie’s Attic in 1997 with Soul Miner’s Daughter. We walked into the show a little after it started and were able to still grab a table. There were probably less than 40 people in the place that night. It was great to be along the ride as SMD got more popular, she formed the Jennifer Nettles Band, and now Sugarland. The first time I saw Sugarland they had something like 6 members. My favorite song was the duet with Will Hoge at the Variety Playhouse (I think it was during the JNB years). They did “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” and it was AMAZING! Along the way I’ve met Jennifer a few times and even as she became more popular, she was still very nice. Congrats to them both!

As a black male growing up in the 70s I listened to rock and roll and r&b.I have drifted toward country music latley because it reminds me of a time when recording contracts were given to people based on talent and not image.Sugarland’s perfomance of Stay floored me..Passionate,elegant yet simple and not over produced.Just a great voice and a great musician.I will grab the new CD asap..

Any one who has been a fan for years and years will remember the friendships formed while sitting on the steps at Eddie’s to get a number for that nights concert. As the years went by you had to get there earlier and earlier. I wonder if Sugarland played Round and Round in a concert how many people would know what to do. All of us who filled Eddie’s dogpound (steps in the back) wish them both luck but man, I sure do miss seeing her at Eddie’s.

James:
Jen style has been influenced by so many soulful and provocative artist. She is a very earthy sistah. She, like myself (if I am not mistaken) is a Social Science major who is fluent in Spanish. Her soul and style is about reaching into the hearts of people. She does her Tennessee (I do believe) roots proud!

M’Karyl: Jennifer is from south Georgia (Douglas)so she is doing her Georgia roots proud! I too remember her at Eddie’s…played a round of pool with her early one Friday evening. Great southern girl that seems to never change with the stardom. By the way,she is no longer married….quietly divorced a few months ago.

Big Brown:
I knew she had true Southern roots, but I remember something about TN, might be some immediate kin or something. And I am sorry to hear that she got a divorce. And no, Jen will never change because of fame or fortune. She is a true Southern Gem of a lady. Gotta love her for it! And she does Agnes Scott proud as well!

I’ve been a fan since the very beginning of Sugarland—I miss the Variety Playhouse days and “Pour Some Sugar on Me”. Very happy for their success—sometimes just long for the not quite so famous days.

I count myself pretty luck. I went to school with Kristian at Emory and we hosted his first gig ever in Atlanta at my fraternity house. I’ve watched him grow as a musician over the years and develop in to a phenomenal songwriter and performer.
I also saw what I believe to be Soul Miner’s Daughter’s first show at Eddie’s and was blown away by Jennifer’s voice.
I also was lucky enough to see one of Kristen Hall’s first gigs, in a dorm lobby at Emory in the mid ’80s. I’ve been a fan ever since. :)
I also sow Sugarland’s first two shows ever at Eddie’s when it was really more of a lark for a few musicians who were friends and having fun writing and performing a few songs together. When I saw these three together, being backed by Clay, Simone and ??? (the basist’s name escapes me at the moment) and it was clear that there really was magic int he melding of talents.
It was sad to see that Kristen leave the band, as her songwriting was certainly a vital part of the band’s magic. Kristian and Jennifer, however, continue to make a formidable songwriting duo.
It’s truly great to see musicians with this level of talent finally find the recognition they deserve after toling away many long nights in small clubs for minimal pay. They deserve every bit of the success they have earned!
(I do miss those marvelously intimate shows at Eddies’ Attic though! :( )

I remember Jennifer Nettles from 4-H camp at Rock Eagle! I then reunited with her when my college brought SMD in for a coffee house! It is thrilling to see how much she has accomplished with her voice of gold!
I was elated to tell folks at the Bon Jovi concert last year (where she made an appearance), that I knew her way back when :)

I remember visiting Jennifer’s kindergarten class at Satilla School in Coffee County,Georgia and I asked what did she want to become as she grew up… She told me that she wanted to be “Miss America”….
I monitored her growth through elementary school; middle school; and high school….she was just awesome. She was a true leader at Coffee High School.
As a kindergarten child…she had a goal to go forward…she is not Miss America, but she has achieved awards greater than Miss America.
Jennifer we are so very, very proud of you.

I read all of the wonderful things you all had to say about these two, then I saw the performance of Beyonce’s song on AMAs. You have to agree that was not good. I wanted all three of them off the stage ASAP. wow!
That was really not a good choice of song. But then again, I am not a fan of the country twang. I like Carrie, Martina, etc, but i didnt like what i heard these two do tonight.

I remember seeing Jennifer perform at Eddie’s, I believe the first time was in 2001. We stumbled up to Eddie’s and wondered what the LONG line was for….luckily we got in that night to a packed house and have been fans ever since. The first time I heard “Stay” performed at Eddie’s I only hoped that she would get the chance to put that song out to so many people. Oh, we sat by her mom one night at Eddie’s too…sweet lady!
