Hip-Hop at the Movies

While embattled Atlanta rapper/actor T.I. occasionally appears in the commercials for the Denzel Washington/Russell Crowe movie “American Gangster” - in theaters today - he is not the most prominent of the hip-hop acts involved.

Both Common and RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan are also in the tale of real-life gangster Frank Lucas. And while they all speak, RZA probably has the most screen time.

None of them, however, do anything particularly remarkable in this film - though it is funny to see the usually smooth and confident T.I. play someone a little corny.

What Atlanta rapper do you think has made the most of his movie moment? Andre “Dre” Benjamin in “Idlewild”? Antwan “Big Boi” Patton in “ATL”? Or are you of the opinion that no hometown hip-hop act can match, say, Queen Latifah in “Set It Off” or fellow Oscar nominee (and one-time rapper) Will Smith in “Pursuit of Happyness”?

I liked Ice Tea in New Jack City. Other than that, he’s nothing but a thug, just like the other gangsta rappers.

There are a plethora of Hip-Hop artists that have made the transition from the “big-stage” to the “big-screen”. Starting with the original players: Kid and Play (House Party…), The Fat Boys (Disorderlee’s), Ice-T (Cameo in Breakin/Colors/New Jack City) and Ice-Cube (Boys N’ Da’ Hood). After that we have had a slew of others make that leap. Not in any particular order, but you have DMX, The Fresh Prince, Heavy-D, Eve, Eminem, 50, Queen Latifah, Tupac, Busta, LL, Method Man, Redman and plenty of others. I like Mos-Def too (contrary to disbelief he was a rapper first), but my nod goes to Will Smith. He has range and he has taken the craft seriously.

No rapper can compare to Will Smith when it comes to acting. But as far as “hard core” rappers are concerned, I would say ICE CUBE in Boys in the hood, TUPAC in juice, and ICE T in new jack city.
