Superlative Soundtracks
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Another day, another list.
This time the editors of Vanity Fair magazine get in on the act with a list of the 50 greatest movie soundtracks. They’ve only released the Top 10 so far, but the rest will be revealed in a special one-time-only magazine — called Movies Rock — being sent out to subscribers to all the magazines from Vanity Fair publisher CondĂ© Nast.
There will also be a two-hour TV special of the same name tied in to the list. It will be taped in Los Angeles on Dec. 2 to air a few days later on CBS. Among the artists scheduled to perform are Beyoncé, Elton John and Carrie Underwood.
Here’s the Top 10, according to a report from Reuters:
- “The Big Chill”
- “American Graffiti”
- “Saturday Night Fever”
- “Trainspotting”
- “Superfly”
- “The Graduate”
- “Pulp Fiction”
- “The Harder They Come”
- “A Hard Day’s Night”
- “Purple Rain”
So, how did they do? Where will “South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut” land? How about “Pretty in Pink” and “The Sound of Music”? Will “Harold and Maude” make it? What’s missing? What just has to be in the next 40?

I would add:
“Oh Brother, Where Art Thou”
“The Rocky Horror Picture Show”
“Pretty in Pink”
“Hedwig and the Angry Inch”
Not necessarily in that order, but these four should definitely be in the top 50.

In addition to Jennifer’s suggestions, I’d add:
Koyaanisqatsi Valley Girl Weird Science Yellow Submarine The Nightmare Before Christmas Kids 24 Hour Party People And if the criteria includes films which are made up of nothing but musical performances, definitely Dance Craze! and Urgh! A Music War.
Not my fave, but I’m surprised Grease isn’t in the top 10. Is it the Broadway connection?
