Music Midtown, and on the outskirts

Welcome back to the now week-old Atlanta Music Scene blog, and here’s hoping you got some rest.

Because next weekend is a Major, Major Music Weekend.

In case you’ve missed the stories, the TV commericals, even the billboards, the second annual BET Hip-Hop Awards is returning to Atlanta Saturday, and taping at the Atlanta Civic Center. And the first Echo Project is being staged Friday, Saturday and Sunday on a private farm in south Fulton.

Already gotten your Echo tickets? Interested in the metro area’s try at a Bonnaroo of its own? Or is it the BET Awards you’re looking forward to — and all of the accompanying star-studded parties?

Echo needs one or two more big names to be competitive..was hoping for Muse, but oh well. Promising, maybe year 2 or 3 will be worth it.

Bouckaert is brilliant! I have always thought his property would be a perfect spot for music festival. Close to a major airport and major interstates, but secluded. Atlanta has deperately needed a real music festival. However, if Bouckaert wants his own Bonnaroo he needs a better lineup and lower prices. Echo needs to offer single day tickets. The ticket prices are too high for this lineup.

Echo for me, I’d rather not get shot while trying to enjoy music.

I think the BET Awards would be fun to see! Would love to see all of the great artists of color being rewarded for their hard work!

I know you are gone by now, but Cara, believe me, there are plenty in people in Atlanta that would want to attend the BET Hip Hop Awards. Must people would attend, not because of the awards themselves, but for the amount of celebrities that would be in attendance. The after parties are going to be ridiculous. If you are not of a certain demographic, I understand your very ill informed statement, because if that is not your thing, I understand, but don’t jump to conclusions about something you obviously know nothing about. You must have forgot that the event is in Atlanta, not south Georgia.

Cara -

You must live in a cave, sweetie. There are PLENTY of people in the ATL who would love to attend the BET Hip Hop Awards. Atlanta is a hub for Black music.

And Harry Johnson, believe it or not, shooting is NOT a common occurance at Black award shows. If the rockers; Kid Rock and Tommy Lee, don’t show up and start fighting over their tired, broken-down, has-been ex-wife, Pamela Anderson, it should be a pretty peaceful event.

Thanks for the heads up AJC… I live close to Peachtree St. and I KNOW after the BET lets out the Impalas, Escalades, etc. will be out in full force with the woofers going full blast at 4:00 a.m. or later. Wouldnt be surprised to hear a few gunshots. I am going out of town this weekend then.

Why in the hell would Atlanta encourage more “thugs” to come to this city?

Everyone knows that there will be multiple shootings (hey, it’s what black guys do b/c they are to scared to throw a punch), one or two sexual assaults (these people are animals) and that traffic will be even worse because instead of being able to afford $20 to park in a private lot, these broke “chicken heads” will park in the street.

Oh and one more thing, the cops will not take any action to prevent any of this “crap” from happening, because then it would be considered by black folks as a violation of their civil rights…….To prevent crime that is.

What a joke.

There is a huge difference between a fist fight and a gun fight! Not common at black award shows, huh? Wasn’t it at BET awards a few years ago a fight broke out and people were stabbed? What about the hit on B.I.G. after the awards show? I’m sure the whole event will be one big religious revival. No, wait, thugs don’t find God until they go to prison.

BET is a racist Separate but equal show-imagine a WET-what a protest that would be. Artists of color-they are HIP HOP Gangsters not water color painters you idiots! I hope the cops don’t interfere so that no on e can claim oppression or violation of their uncivil rights to act like wild jungle inhabitants. And then they blast their crappy music and disturb the peace under their “I’ve been oppressed” doctrine. What a bunch of bull. If we had elected intelligent officials in Atlanta, this garbage would not come here. Clogs up the streets, more crime, no peace and no civility. If they burn down Atlanta-it will be the NAACP’s faulty as well as the King’s. For not controlling their villagers. Let’s see jesse and al lie their way out of this one if it turns into a riot. Celebrities? Celebrity what-hoodlums and drug dealers? Just what we need-Picking pot with Pedro and Pushing Dope with Dontrelle and Kinesha. Pimping with the Godfather and Laquanta.

Why do I get a bad feeling we’re in for some Las Vegas NBA All-Star Game type “festivities” to happen all over again? Uh … no thanks. I’ll pass. Better to read all about the mindless rioting, random assaults and body counts in next morning’s paper.

Jacquie, what are you smoking? I am a black man and even I Won’t go down there because of what happens. It just may be another NBA festivities shoot out. People feeling dissed and all. You are taking your life in your own hands when you go down there. Stay home with a good dinner, wine and a woman! Now, THAT’s entertainment peace-out!

NICK, CARA and HARRY JOHNSON, you all really need to get a grip. Atlanta is the home for Black Music, if that rubs you the wrong way, then MOVE!!! There are plenty of people who would love to attend the BET Hip Hop Awards. I most certainly agree with Jacquie, If Kid Rock and Tommy Lee aren’t at the event, there shouldn’t be any fights or gunfire. I think you three, just like others who make such racist remarks about Blacks and the Hip Hop culture , are simply upset and jealous that all these Black artists have such a profound effect on your children. Once again, if you cannot except this beautiful culture - MOVE!!

By BCR

You people need to move to North or South Dakota. This little urban award show is the least of your silly little problems if you live in any metropolitan area. Give me a break. Look your doors, clinch your purses, call the police, buy a gun, stay at home, the scary Black people are coming to town. BOO!!!!

By Diogenes

Monica, I wish I COULD “except” (which means “exclude”) the culture which you reference, but unfortunately, I believe you were asking, in your rather unique, if erroneous, diction, that I “accept” it. Again, I think I’ll pass.

White People are quick to say negative things about Black people, yet white people are ALWAYS the first to make racist remarks. Racism is something that you cannot kill, the sooner peole can come to terms with that, the better. Most of us work twice as hard as white people, yet we are still not where we should be. Black people you all need to think about that - I mean really think about that. PEACE!!

Diogenes, this is Greek. Diogenes is a beggar who taught contempt for human achievements and suggested a return to animalism, you are against social values. I suggest you go back into the wilderness and live out the rest of your sorry life. However, the animals may not even want you there, so GOOD LUCK!!!!

Monica, the most salient of Diogenes’ endeavors was wandering around ancient Greece carrying a lantern and searching for the proverbial “honest man.” Although a devout Cynic, Diogenes went on this (ultimately, it proved) fruitless journey as an altruistic, philosophical search for a truly evolved human being.

Obviously, I am in the wrong venue (and CERTAINLY writing on the wrong topic) to continue THAT search, and therefore, shall take my lamp and continue it elsewhere. Ciao (yes, I know that’s Italian, and not Greek, but it seemed so apropos).

Monica S,

Would you be surprised to learn, % wise, that as many blacks are racist against whites as whites against blacks? Would it surprise you that many people think they work really hard and are not where they are supposed to be? Maybe the reason you are not where you want to be isn’t the color of your skin, but the content of your character. It is time for black America to quit blaming white America for it’s problems. Most of white america, along with all the other “groups, creeds, religions and ethnicities etc” are too busy worrying about their own problems to care what the hell black america does. Maybe black america should do the same.

Lot of E-mail tough guys just waiting to make their racist comments. The year is 2007 and still we have this kind of talk hiding being a computer. What are you going to do on judgement day when your deeds are exposed?

By Diogenes

October 8, 2007 5:50 PM | Link to this

Alvin, most of what I have seen is not “race-based” at all. Most haven’t said anything derogatory about anyone which is dependent upon their race. I have, however, seen a good amount of derogatory comments aimed at some peoples’ poor, aberrant and anti-social behavior and cultural norms. Certainly, there’s nothing at all wrong with that … at least according to none other than MLK.

WET already exists. You all know them as ABC, NBC, CBS and etc. If you actually bothered to look, you would notice that most of the tv shows feature a predominantly white cast. Quit crying about a perceived racial oppression! Second of all, BET and the rest of the ‘separate but equal’ awards/ programs wouldn’t exist if minorities were equally represented and acknowledged by their white counterparts. Granted, BET is probably one of the worst television networks on today. It’s not even black owned anymore. To Who Cares: Another man’s garbage is another man’s treasure. So you don’t like rap, I don’t care for country. Do you see me knocking CMT or any of country music’s award shows? Different strokes for different folks.
All black guys own guns? Really? I must have missed the memo on that one, Nick. Can’t afford to pay $20 to park? Don’t you mean $40 0r $50? That’s more in line with the colored people’s price! I won’t be going down there. If it’s anything like the NBA All-Star Game weekend, I definitely will be staying home. The police will get the bright idea to shut down GA 400 or the streets around the Civic Center.

I don’t think anyone on here blamed white America. Why are you getting defensive, Ray? The postings here are a response to blatant ignorant statements posted by some of your peers. There’s a big difference between criticizing the behavior and spouting off stereotypes. Second, I think it’s long overdue to drop this white America, black America crap! This is America, the supposed melting pot. Your problems are mine, and vice versa. Until we recognize that, we’re going to have arguments much like these. Let’s address issues as a country. I think this saying appropriately describes our current mindset - No one cares about sh*t in the ocean until it washes up on their shore.

HipHop is wrong! It’s the work of the devil and there is nothing positive about it. The lyrics, the attitude, the dress, the behaviors are all threatening, discomforting, and defiant. I have tried like hell to understand it and accept it but there is nothing positive I can see to it.

Adam,

Read Monica S. posts above mine and you will see to whom I was responding. Not getting definsive at all. I stand and will let god and my actons stand for me. I am not a racist, I am objective. Re-read my post and look a at hers. Just as racist and race insulting as the other dumbA$$ post by OUR peers. You statement of “my peers” lumps me with folks who have posted messages in which have no agreement. You should understand the word peers before you use it. Be objective and re-read my post. Can you honestly say I am white? Are you certain? Are you black? Am I certain? Peers. That was weak. As for the white America and black America, while I agree that it would be great if the was one America, that is not possible with posts(and people) like hers and theirs(still p** about the peers coment my friend). And if all of our problems are shared, then I have every right to criticize the non-sense I see coming out of BET. Because whether I am black or white or whatever I may be, I am ashamed as an American to see everything from Paris Hilton to 90% of Rap/Hip-Hop. I am certain everyone from Jefferson and Washington to Dubois and (B.T.) Washington would be thrilled with what we have become.

Adam,

Just one more little retort. WET and BET. What % of America is black would you say? What % white? And what % hispanic? Lastly, what % the hundred of others? Now, when you get done looking that up, go and see how many channels are WET and BET and then HET(hispanic) and how many others get their own tv channel? Now, why do you think that is? There is one BET and 2 HET. Blacks have one channel. ONE. Why is that? Money. That is it. If hispanics can get 2 channels in 5 years, why in the world are blacks still on one? Money. If someone thought they could make money doing it, it would be done. I don’t know why there is no money in more BET’s, but I promise if there was, there would be more available to blacks. Just follow the money man, it’s not anything other than that.

The amount of ignorant, racist/prejudice comments on this blog are amazing. It’s really sad. How stupid do you have to be to make a post as ignorant as “Nick” or “Who Cares,” or a comment like “wouldn’t be suprised to hear a few gunshots”?!? “M,” your opinion is just unfortunately from a lack of knowledge/exposure. Why is it that the AJC can’t post a blog topic like this without the unnecessary racially derogatory comments, and why don’t they take some control over these blogs and ban those sort of unacceptable responses?? It’s an embarrassment to the educated/intelligent, non-racist, sensible residents of this area.

I agree with you Sad. I wonder if you bigoted imbeciles actually read the article. Did you see where it said that the BET Hip Hop Awards were RETURNING to Atlanta? It was held here last year and the entire weekend happened with no violence or arrests there were related to the event. You people are so offended when a Yankee makes commments or have stereotypes about the South, yet your actions and comments pretty much justify their percepetions.
