Ex-NFL player convicted of drug trafficking charge

The Associated Press

VALDOSTA, Ga. —

Federal prosecutors say a former NFL player has pleaded guilty to heroin trafficking and illegally carrying a firearm.

Officials say 37-year-old Robert Cedrick Baker III, of Gainesville, Fla., pleaded guilty in federal court in Valdosta, Ga., Tuesday.

The wide receiver played for Auburn University and was listed on nfl.com as playing for the Miami Dolphins from 1999-2002 and Minnesota Vikings for one last season, recording just one catch. He was stopped on a Georgia highway for a traffic violation in January.

Investigators say they found heroin and a semi-automatic pistol during a search of Baker's car.

Authorities say Baker admitted the heroin was for distribution and he faces up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine for the drug charge.
