Does your job depress you?

With such dreary weather this week, let’s take a look at what Chandra Fox has to say about those with depressing occupations:

Let’s face it, many people have very depressing jobs. Typical jobs that can be emotionally devastating include personal care workers, prison guards and counselors for abused children. The good news is that you can learn to balance your work and personal life without being overwhelmed by a job that seems hopeless.

A prison guard I spoke to said that dealing with inmates is typically sad. “The same criminals are back through the system over and over. Many times the intellect you are dealing with is very low and the difference between good and bad does not seem to resonate.” In a similar way, child abusers cannot change overnight, if ever, and the impact on their victims will last a lifetime. When counselors focus on rehabilitation of these individuals, the process can be long and cumbersome. From these examples, you can see that change is difficult and your job can seem more bad than good. So how do you overcome it?

Train yourself to keep things that are handled at work only in your mind during work hours and allow yourself the time to escape when you are not at work. Many professionals handle workplace pressures with exercise like yoga to combat the stress or depression that often accompany particular jobs.

What are the most stressful or depressing aspects of your job and how do you cope?

I was hired to take over a company that was losing money. We are now making money, despite the poor economy. What’s depressing is that the entire staff I inherited had too little experience and darn little training. They should be farther along by now, but dang, I’m tired. It’s dragging on me a little bit. I need a second wind to help them get over the hump.

My job does not depress me, I like my job. It is co-workers that depress me. The back biting and back stabbing is horrendous. It is hard to stay out of it. People want to tell you what others say about you and sometimes you just don’t want to hear it. I think these people that talk about you behind your back are jealous.

My job depresses me. It is telemarketing. I get tired of calling and harassing people each day. I feel hopeless at times and don’t see a light at the end of the tunnel. With the economy being so bad, I feel like I’m trapped at times.

My job does not depress me but my supervisors do. They are worse than my co-workers with the backbitting, lying and all of the unprofessional behavior. We have not gotten a raise in two years. All of the e-mails that my co-workers and I get tell us how much money we have made the company and that we still have not made enough. It is depressing to see how much the company has grown and our paychecks is still the same.

Everything about my job depresses me. No hope of advancement, recognition, higher pay, a day off…. the list goes on.

I work in retail and the enviroment has almost become too much. I don’t set the price for the goods but the customers complain to me constantly about the market price. The ones that you bend over backwards for don’t acknowledge your efforts. Many want something for nothing. It never ceases to amaze the lengths andthe amount of sorted tales(lies) they will bring to the table. Just to try and get their way. Many just can’t grasp that we have to make a profit on the transaction. We are a small independant store and they have no loyalty. Many will buy elsewhere and them come and demand service on the product because we are a franchise. Between the hours and customer sentiment, I plan to move on to another industry. After 25 years, manners, respect, and politeness don’t exist anymore from the public but in rare cases.

I like my job but the pay depresses me. I know I have choices but I keep thinking my hard work will eventually pay off. Also, the alternative for me is consulting - which would have me on the road M-Thurs night. Not so good when you have a toddler.

My job has totally and completely transformed from being busy all the time to basically doing nothing. Not my fault, technology is wonderful but……. What I get a kick at is when somebody needs a report and cannot find it on the main system at the company, since they are being processed somewhere else, I have no control over the documents. Lots of frustration sometimes, but if I don’t process the information, I can’t create the report.

my job doesn’t depress me—it’s the current regime of mgmt that does. our upper mgmt is always telling us how we need to grow the company, then down-sizes everything right down to the vendor for our work required apparel. i guess that’s why all the smart employees left a long time ago, leaving the dummies like me to wonder what we’re doing wrong.
