Tattoos: Ancient art meets modern workplace

Tattoos have left a historical footprint worldwide in many cultures (see Oetzi the ice man) and should be looked upon, beyond the workplace, as self-expression. Many old-timers feel that tattoos are inappropriate and should be covered in the workplace, but some Fortune 500 companies (Coca-Cola and Starbucks) have become more open to the idea of body art (through tattoos and piercings), realizing that truly inventive professionals are not only creative from 9 to 5.

From the employer’s perspective, you only get one chance to make a first impression with clients at tradeshows and with investors. How can the employer send Bob Smith (with tattoos from shoulder to wrist) to meet the company’s prospective clients and think it will be a wise move for the company’s bottom line?

But from the employee’s point-of-view, they wonder why do employers care what I have on my body? It does not affect my creativity or professionalism, which is why the company is paying me. What I do in my personal time is my choice.

We live in a free society, but some managers want to put boundaries on what is tasteful in terms of self-expression. The law is not necessarily on the tattooed employee’s side. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) says that dress codes and appearance policies can be enforced in the workplace, as long as the employer doesn’t discriminate based on a person’s race, color, religion, age, national origin or gender.

Have a tattoo, piercing or green-colored hair? There is a Web site called The Modified Mind Employee Line to help those creative souls who are looking for work and finding it tough out there with conservative employers.

Before embarking upon any tattoo work, review your employer’s dress and appearance codes. After uncovering this information, determine the best balance between your career and your body art. Even if employers are OK with tattoos, some customers may be more conservative. Companies typically have to look at things in regard to the influence on customers. If sales decrease because customers are not comfortable with your body art - right or wrong - the company has to put bottom line first.

Have you ever been fired from a job or not been hired because of your tattoos or other examples of bodily self-expression?

My own tatoo is easily hidden (‘tis on the inside of my right ankle), and any others I get will be similarly easy to hide.

Only exception to that general rule for myself is if I ever replace my tungsten wedding ring with a tatoo wedding ring. (Something I’ve seen on a few people and like, but don’t know if I’ll ever do.)

And in general, I think most offices go with the same rule I do: If your general work wardrobe easily covers the tatoo, they typically don’t care if you have one or not. If, however, your work attire does NOT cover the tatoo, then they start caring. (And btw: Technically this is probably true about unusual hair coloring as well. Somehow, I just don’t see CocaCola caring if someone has blue hair below the belt as long as s/he does NOT have blue hair above the shoulders! :) )

The business world does have a right to expect professionalism - how seriously would you take a consultant who had a tattoo on his or her face? That being said, there are lots of places on the body for the “creative” (using the blog’s descriptor, not mine - I don’t think body art is in any way indicative of creativity) to use. You could have Tony the Tiger covering your whole back and no one at work would ever need to know unless you told them. I’ve worked in professional environments where VPs, Directors, and such actually bragged about their tattoos. But could you see them, heck no! You’d never guess, and that’s the point.

I have tow tatts at present.Let me tell you about them. One is concealed and the other is visible. The 1st is a symbol. The symbol that Prince used while his name was in excile. You know..when he was the artist formely know as Prince. That weird symbol. It’s on my right buttocks. I stayed with all black, as coloration would have been tacky in my estimation. It’s kinda stretching some as my body parts a no longer as firm as they once were but I still thinks it’s cool. The 2nd is visible and on my forearm. My employer is not crazy about it, and has remarked. However, he has not threatened my job. It’s a woody wood pecker holding a rebel flag. Some find it’s tasteless but I find it’s form of self expression.

I personally think tatoos are hideous. I cannot stand to see them, and don’t know why anyone in their right mind would mark up their body permanently. Especially on women, that’s just beyond gross. Makes me think of trailer park trash.

Yes it’s so creative to go sit in a chair and pay someone to put “artwork”, use that term very very loosely, on your body. Not just anybody can do it, oh wait, yes they can. You aren’t special, you aren’t creative, you are simply a by product of Capitalism. You paid someone to perform a service and they did. Wow. Aren’t you the creative one.

Tatoos are great if they have meaning to you and are not obvious or are hidden well when they need to be. Not sure what the big deal is even if everyone can see them. It’s pure choice. Same goes true for haircut or color, clothing, etc.

I went though a very tough time in my life, God brought me through it. Therefore, I have a cross on my upper back to remind me that he is always watching my back. I have tattoos. I love them. I honestly don’t care what anyone else thinks about them. What matters most is how I feel about myself. I am smart enough to know that they don’t project a professional appearance, so I keep them covered at work. Frankly I get tired of people asking me about them. I think is several decades down the line they won’t be so taboo.

If viewable, they greatly simplify the the interview evaluation and hiring process.

Ear rings on men or piercings on anyone are are equally helpful for assisting in the decision making process.

Q: If you are so proud of your tattoos, then why cover them up in the workplace?

A: I am embararassed to let my employer & co-workers know what a trashy idiot I am!

PS - Your employer is not stupid - they know you have tattoos - even if hidden. Regardless of what you believe, it does effect your career advancement. You can be held back and/ or terminated for your appearance - EEOC laws don’t matter. :)

As an employer there are time I must make decisions based on my gut feelings. When I see a person all inked up I can’t help but think this person is capable of making irrational decisions. You also have to be careful about the image you want youe company to convey to the outside world. If i can’t see your ink, that’s fine, if I can see it and you’re tied for the job with someone without the ink, you’ll lose out. As the boss, the decisions is mine.

I have a small amount of tattoos. I’m proud of them all. They are dedicated to my freedom, my children, and my parents. I did not get them to be different or to be creative. I got them because I wanted them.

When I got my first one, there was nothing in the company I worked for at the time handbook about them. I had it on my ankle. At that office, I wore slacks almost every day because of the location of my desk and I just happened to my leg a certain way and my boss saw it. She was ok with it, actually 2 of the 3 bosses I had were ok with it. The other one I thought was going to have a cornanary.

I have never hid any of my tattoos from anyone when they met me. Well, some are in locations you can not see them unless I am wearing a bathing suit or something.

I have an awesome career right now and when I interviewed, I was wearing a suit with a skirt. My ankle was showing. I was offered the job on the spot. However, it wasn’t until a month later that my boss realized I had a tattoo. I told it is just one of a few I have. I asked if it was a problem. He said no. No one here (his bosses) would ever have an issue with me having them. I have one on my shoulder that shows with certain shirts. My boss has since hired another guy here that has his arm done (shoulder to just below the elbow) and I don’t think anyone has said anything to him either.

However, I have more respect for my family than my husbands. I did hide my first one from my aunt. My daughter told her I had one. She laughed and said I was just like my daddy. My husbands family cringe everytime they see a spec of mine. That’s their opinion.

If I need to for a client or a customer, I will cover my tattoos. Its not a big deal to do it.

I am a teacher and I have 3 tattoos and I am in the process of picking out my next one. I think that it is my choice whether or not I decorate my body. I do not flaunt my art to my students, but if they happen to see them and ask me about them I do tell them the meaning. All of my art has meaning to me. I think if you don’t like them don’t get them and don’t judge those who do.

wow, it amazes me on how narrow minded some of you are. if a person wants a tatto on their body, so be it!! if it is gross or inappropriate, don’t show it at work, keep it covered. i have several tatt that are inconspicuous.

Don’t pass judgement on those who choose or choose not to be tatted up.

remember there was a time in society where women couldn’t wear pants or vote, whites couldnot marry blacks, blacks had to sit on the back of the bus, children worked in sweat shops for 12-14 hours, people who were mentally deficient were hidden in institutions…that was when we were a closed minded society. please don’t pass judgement on people.

I have one tattoo on the back of my lower neck (which can easily be covered by my hair or clothes) and two body piercings. Personally I’d prefer more ink than holes. But hey…for everyone else…if you don’t like it then don’t look at it. It’s not your body. I do work in a corporate office environment and I do plan on getting more tattoos. Of course they will be places that can easily be covered in business attire. …hey, I have bills to pay…

I got my first tattoo about 5 or 6 years ago (and I’m 34 now). Each one of my tattoos is unique and not something you can find on the walls of a tattoo shop. They were all hand drawn by either me or my artist and are reflections of who I am as a person. One is a memorial to my parents, another is my family crest and another is reflective of my history as a “computer geek”. They are all easily hidden since they are on my lower legs and in no way detract from my ability to perform in a professional workplace. I am the senior guy for my team, have advanced quite well within the company I work for and actually have coworkers who, once they see the tattoos, comment that they think they are really cool and wished they had something they could come up with to get done on themselves. It’s about personal expression and if you don’t like them, I say just don’t look at them or get one. Each person is free to make their own choices in life and just because you might not agree doesn’t mean that everyone should share your sentiments. To each his own…

I have two tattoos; each is so important that I considered for years which version of the symbol I wanted and where to place it. One is well hidden (below the belt): a penguin. The other is centered between my shoulder blades: the Eye of Horus. Both represent Good Fortune. My bosses know that I am decorated, and they are quite interested in my thoughts, as they are Asian and understand different belief systems.
I am in the midst of considering where my third will be, a representation of a Nordic Rune. So, yes, I believe in body decorations. My God gave me my form, to take care of. I am honoring my God in doing just that.

I have 4, never want them removed as they show who I am on the inside to those who do see them. Why do I keep them hidden you may ask, well its simple really I had mine put in places where a short sleeve shirt can cover them up, its called a work line. My tattoo’s are for me, if someone else sees them so be it, I’ll answer any questions they have about them, but they are mine and hidden because well, really cant go anywhere nowadays without a shirt on. I am a professional and when they find out I have tattoo’s they find it rather interesting that someone of my education, and professional level actually has tattoo’s. They are great conversation starters and very good ways to break the ice in most all initial meetings.

I am PROUD of my tattoo, it is just about always hidden, I got it for ME, and it means something to ME. If I choose to share it with someone whether they are a co-worker or not, that is my decision. I am in management for a very high profile company and am responsible for hiring in my department. Not ONCE have I interviewed someone and immediately judged them if they had a tattoo visible. I guess it’s just a level of maturity and an ability to not judge people too quickly. Good thing I don’t look at all people WITHOUT a tattoo and judge them as pretentious, stuck up butt heads. You are really showing your ignorance. While you are right in the sense that anyone can put ink on a needle and mark skin permanently, not everyone creates art when they do it.

I have a large cross on my back which I got after a very difficult time in my life. It carries a deep meaning and whenever someone sees it(which outside of my wife isnt often)they are blown away by the detail and what the artist was able to create with black and white ink.

I would spend a bit more time thinking before typing next time. Not all tattoos are meaningful. Some people just get images that they like to look at. That is fine too. For those of us whose ink marks moments in our lives or tells a story about us through art on our skin, there is deep meaning. To us, you are talking about something of which you have no understanding or comprehension.

Tattoos have no place in the workplace. Keep them hidden at all times. That said, tattoos look hideous and usually ARE worn by mostly white trailer trash or 1 step above that economic strata. If you ever go to a festival or concert and see a tattooed woman, she is usually drunk, chain smoking, is missing teeth and cussing every 5 seconds. Nascar fan comes to mind.

I am a mother of five who is happily married. My boyfriend thinks I’m very hot and loves all of my tattos. My latest is a bed of roses in my lower region so now any guy that Im intimate with can say hes done it in a flower garden. At the same time, I took my 18 year old to get tattoed and she loves her too.

Honestly, I think morbidly obese people and those ridiculous lacquered hairstyles can be just as visually unpleasant as tattoos. I have a few, one you can see (a fluer-de-lis) and the others you can’t. Nothing I’d be ashamed to show my daughter. I get it that some people can’t handle someone else having a tattoo. So in a way, if your job requires interaction with a paying customer, then the company should have the right to insist on visual requirements such as covering tattoos, certain clothing, makeup, hair, jewelry, even your percieved attractiveness. Believe it or not, studies have shown that most people will buy more from someone they believe is attractive. One study even saw that, in the reverse, the one area that did not work was with people who identified themselves as “very overweight” bought LESS from people that everyone ELSE considered attractive. I find many (not all) tattoos interesting. I would talk to a girl with a full-facial tattoo, and depending on the art, may find her pretty, but wouldn’t hire her as a cashier, except in a tattoo parlor.

It takes a “Simple” mindset to willingly allow someone to draw on you. Have you ever heard of drawing paper? No work of art is worthy enough to be permanently etched in your flesh! There are people with Class, and people without Class.Just like there is a certain stigma concerning people who live in trailer parks or the ghetto. There is a certain stigma concerning people who feel a sense of value from wearing a tattoo.

one thing i find quite funny? hypocritical? in these comments are the people who say, “i have X amount of tattooes and i’m very proud of them”, but then follow it up with, “but i keep them hidden..” or some other pathetic comment.

you know what? i have 5 tattooes, 2 of which are visible - right on my wrists. the other 3 are in places i wanted to have them done, not because i have this fear of workplace repercussions, but because that’s where i wanted them. i’m not “hiding” anything and they aren’t vile and disgusting, just felt right to be in those particular spots.

please, people, if you’re proud of your tattooes, don’t say that you keep them hidden….just say they’re in spots you wanted or dont’ say anything at all about location. seriously, it says to me that you are ashamed when you “hide” them.

I ask why there is always a negative association with a tattoo. Every thought that the other connotations of getting ink could be a willingness to commit, to think long-term, to communicate on multiple levels, introspection. All those traits sound straight out of an HR handbook and are all typical of the decision to get a tattoo.

I have 5 tats. All, except one, are hidden 99.9% of the time. The one that’s sometimes visible of typically only partially visible to others. It usually takes them a few minutes and then someone will ask “is that a tattoo”. I’ve had them so long and they are just part of me I don’t think about them until asked. Everything could use discretion. So don’t put them on display.

I personally do not have tattoos, but have considered it. I am all for folks expressing their freedoms through tattoos, body piercings, or what have you. Some cultures view these as good things. In mainstream American culture, these are considered inappropriate for the workplace.

Your employer is not paying you to make the coffee, file the documents, balance the books, sell the products, etc. They are paying you to do these things in a way that contributes to profitability. Therefore, if your tattoos, or piercings, or manner of dress, or boogers in your nose detract from this…you will not be performing the function for which you were hired.

If you think your employer does not care about these things, you are WRONG, no matter what they tell you publicly. There are businesses that exist outside mainstream corporate America that follow the same logic, only from the other side — how many tattoo parlor owners would hire a straight-laced employee who dresses conservatively, has no tattoos or piercings, wears a suit and tie to work, etc? — none. That is because you will not attract customers, you will distract your co-workers, etc. That in turn leads to lower profit. Businesses exist to maximize profit.

By all means, get a tattoo of your choosing on whatever part of your body you choose. And then live with the consequences of that choice, good or bad.

Tattoos are a matter of personal preference, and the policies toward their display in the work place are up to individuals and their employers. To the rather disturbing contingent here, who have chosen to stereotype people with tattoos as illiterate, be very careful when you make such assumptions. The FREEDOM that you complain about is the same FREEDOM that gives you the right to express your opinion. If you are unhappy with that FREEDOM, you also have the ability to relocate to an area that is geared more toward your point of view: from the reports lately, there are lots of cults that need new, mindless members.

I grew up in church, and yes I learned we were to treat our body like a temple, but what about those that over eat, “judge people”, beat their wife, child or dog, smoke/drink, cuss, have sexual thoughts, etc.. all sins are created equal. I have one tattoo, a Peach, because of Steve Miller Band Song “Joker”. I got it when I was 17, so yes I was young but I put it in a location for me. When I turned 37, I had it recolored & had Georgia wrote across it. To me, it just shows I’m a true Southern Ga Peach. I suggest a tight-collared, suit- wearing person contributes less to society than a t-shirt wearing tattoo artist who probably has more true friends that you’ll ever have in your entire life and probably a lot more fun, too. In response to two of you:

AlohaVampire June 25, 2008 1:25 PM I didn’t see any mentions above about “tramp stamps”. Those can be visible almost any time. I can’t stand a pretty girl with a butterfly tattoo just above her butt. I don’t understand it. In my personal opinion I think yuck. Ankles and back of shoulders are were ink belongs on a woman.

Really? Why just those two places? What’s wrong with “tramp stamps”? As long as they’re not fairies or butterflies or something ridiculous, why does it matter where it is?

And Kyle June 25, 2008 1:50 PM Tattoos have no place in the workplace.

Did you REALLY just stereotype that badly? Please get a life.

I am a young female (early 20s), and I got my only tattoo when I was 19. It’s NOT on my lower back, but it IS on my right hip bone. I chose to get it there because I wanted it to be hidden if necessary, and the only person who needs to see it every day is me. It isn’t something stupid like cherries, but instead, it’s a symbol that means a lot to me and my family background. So who are you all to tell me that it’s unclassy or trashy or anything like that? You don’t know me, and you don’t know anything about me. I chose to get it FOR ME. And yes, since I know this world is full of people who hate tattoos and find them disgusting — I didn’t get it for the world to see.

By Layton

I have one tattoo which is of great significance to me. I planned it for 5 years before getting it, and finally had it done on a very special occasion. I come from a conservative family who doesn’t approve of that particular form of self-expression, but they accept it because they realize that it is MY life. Frankly, I don’t care what random people think of me for having a tattoo, and I would be a pretty pathetic person if I did.

I have the right to have as many tattoos as I want. And to the person who stated that the workplace has the right to hire or not hire anyone they want - I absolutely agree with you. I work for people I respect, and if they ask me to keep my tattoo covered I will do so out of respect for them. If I was ever turned down for a job or fired because of my tattoo, I’d just know that that wasn’t the right job for me. I wouldn’t work for any cause that is that wrapped up in misconceptions.

And like so many others, I too am glad that tattoos are so effective in dividing the population. It makes it ever so much easier to recognize the small-minded people of the world, who are so in love with themselves that they can’t accept the idea of anyone not being exactly like them.

Employers have the right to do what they want, if you do not like it, find a job elsewhere. Perhaps some place where the employer does not care how much you have scribbled all over your body or how many extra holes you have put in your head. I have often thought it would be a good study to tag people, like they used to do on Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, with excessive piercings and tattoos when they are young and then re-capture them again when they are 50 or so to ask them how smart all of that body modification really was.

By Steve-O

June 26, 2008 8:20 AM | Link to this

Since when it is a sign of creativity to have someone else paint something on your body? Sorry but that is a stretch! It does not take any smarts or personal creativity to walk into a tatto parlor and point to a design on the wall. You people are deluding yourselves. When I see tattoos I think to myself “there goes a person who will do anything to be trendy.” When that trend is no longer popular, and the time will come when it isn’t so popular any more, you will all look like idiots (if you don’t already). You absolutely have the right to do whatever you want with your body but others have the right to judge you as well, that’s how life works. My cousin is absolutely covered with tattoos and when he comes to family dinners no one ever says a thing to him about them and I can see the disappointment on his face. He is just dying for us to comment or be shocked and even my 93 year-old grandmother knows better than to give him the satisfaction. And BTW he is one of the dumbest most uncreative people I know so that blows that theory. If you truly want to be an individual then don’t follow the rest of the cattle to the tattoo parlor. Some of the silliest things I have ever heard are in this blog! “I got this one on my right foot because my right side is stronger.” Huh? Are you kidding me? A friend of mine, years ago, got a typical lower back tattoo and it was made up of some kind of strange symbols when she showed it to me she said “they stand for something very meaningful to me.” So I asked her what they stood for and she said “I can’t remember exactly what they mean but I have it written down at home and I can email it to you.” For a second I almost laughed and then I realized she was serious. Oh yes, it is so meaningful to me, but I don’t know, it’s written down at home somewhere. God!

I live intown and whenever I go to certain stores or restaurants and see, particularly women, with tattoos all over their bodies, faces and necks, I feel so terrible for them. Such a foolish choice. I realize right now they are young and beautiful and living a particular kind of life but life changes and, God willing, we all grow old. I just have a hard time imagining these poor people as middle-aged with big tattoos all up and down their necks and arms; tattoos on sagging, aging skin. It won’t be pretty and I am sure there will come a time when they very much regret it.

OK, so a tattoo reflects who you are as a person, and they have meaning to you. That’s all fine and dandy.

Tell me then, why do you cover them up? How can you find meaning in a symbol tattoo’d on your back, where you cannot see it?

I don’t care for body marring, and that’s my opinion. Those of us who do not like tattoos are allowed to voice our opinion, just as well as those who have the tats.

If it’s personal to you, then keep it personal. I myself do not understand why anyone would want to permanently mar their body. Or have some stranger inject ink into your body and call it ART. I just don’t get it…….

What kills me is all the tatted up individuals on this blog who claim they don’t care what others think. Seriously? If you paint your body up and display it to the world then you care so much more about what others think the rest of us don’t know what to do with you. If you don’t care what others think then why are you all on this blog defending your tattoos. If you really don’t care what the non-tattooed think you wouldn’t even be on this blog. The truth is you care so much it is driving you crazy.

I’m glad to see that he has a real job and has achieved what is probably going to be the peak of his working career.

Actions come with consequences. This is something most of us learn at a very early age. It’s you body to decorate as you well please but it’s also the right of a business person who has invested, in some cases, great amounts of money, to run a successful business. If the tattoos mean so much to your individual personality, by all means go for the ink. Just keep in mind and realize the next candidate in the interview process may come in without all the colorful distractions and they’ll get the job you didn’t get. Are they worth regulating yourself to a low end job for? Personally I don’t think so but that’s just the opinion of one person.

My mother-in-law got several tattoos when she got older and her kids were grown. She had been a good Catholic daughter, wife, mother all her life and she felt like rebelling. She was so proud of her tattoos and showed them to everyone. The sad part is what she didn’t know is that everyone, even her husband, thinks they are the most hilarious mid-life crisis ever. She is teased and ridiculed behind her back about them by all of her children and many of her friends. They love her but she really looks foolish. So stupidity is not wasted on the young.

Give it up to Darnell, why would anyone bring race or politics into a debate about tattoo’s. Darnell, as a conservative, I will be so happy when Obama is elected president. After he is elected to the most powerful position in the world, you and others will not be able to pull the race card anymore. Maybe then, Jessie Jackson and his homeboys will get a life and complain about things that really matter.

Why permanently disfigure your body? Are those things still going to look when you’re 65? I can’t stand tattoos. They do look completely unprofessional-unless you happen to work at the circus or carnival in which case I suppose they are appropriate.

I am a heavily tattooed Executive Assistant. I’ve been an EA for 27 yrs, tattooed for 12 of those years. I have only had one job where my tattoos - which are very feminine and pretty, lots of flowers, fairies, butterflies - were an issue for one boss. He asked me to keep them covered. I was more than happy to do so. I waited until I was in my mid-30s to get my first tattoo. I made sure I knew what I wanted, that it had meaning to me and was in good taste. I did not want something I would regret in my twilight years. My tattoos are a reflection of my personality…a free spirit, easy going, mystical, and a bit contradictory.

And how ‘bout those hideous calf tattoos - WTF?

You tatted-up jackasses deserve to have your butts kicked by a marauding band of Hells’ Angels - the kind of gentleman who don’t look like a bunch of wannabe fools who get tattoos to boost their low-azz self-esteem. Freakin’ goofballs.

There are a lot of very narrow minded people on here that need some intense diversity training. Most people use discretion when displaying their tattoos.

I was with a friend a church last week and a female walked in with blue highlights in her hair. He leaned to me and said, Someone needs to give her a spanking. I thought to myself, we sit in a place where there is only ONE judge. ONE being that can cast judgment on others and you have the nerve to do so without even knowing this individual.

For being the Bible belt it is awfully negative around here. I believe Jesus said Live life to the fullest and not to judge your fellow man.

Whether the haters out here like it or not, there are some pretty successful people with tattoos and piercings, or colored hair, or t-shirts, or high heels, or tennis shoes, or whatever we choose to complain about this week. Because this is what America has become, a place where we can sue for feelings. A place where we can sue for spilling a cup of coffee on ourselves, knowing the cup of coffee was hot to begin with.

America needs to wake up, visit some of the other countries out there and see that they don’t have time to sit on their couch and judge others.

Being part of corporate America and holding a high paying job doesn’t mean that you are more successful . Most of these individuals have a family at home that doesn’t even know them anymore. Most of these individuals have a spouse that has been forced into an affair because the magic that once was has disappeared.

Amazing how much weight we put on having a tattoo. Want to see mine? It has my children’s names in it. It symbolizes a lot to me. I am proud of my children, I love my children. No one has a tattoo like mine, I didn’t pick it off a wall, I didn’t pick it out of a book. I drew it. It has meaning. It has a story, it has memories. It doesn’t stop me from getting a job.

America is lost because of all the people on here that think they can judge others. Please grow up a little bit.

I also forgot to mention that for the haters, think back to the day when blacks had to sit at the back of the bus because the color of their skin wasn’t white. What makes this any different?

You are discriminating against people with tattoos the same way blacks were discriminated against. It is quite sickening to think we still have that mentality.

Darnell is baiting (I think) you guys and he’s good at it. Someone compared toenail polish to tatoos. How ignorant is that? The polish can be removed at any time for free. Is the same true for tats? There something to be said about the ability to be spontaneous and those of you with tats cannot do that without covering another part of your body. After a while, you just look like a junkie who’s replaced coke with tatoos. No control!

I just have to get my two cents in on this one! As they say, “In my opinion”…..the worst thing about getting a tattoo is when teenagers get them at 16, (where are their parent’s) and then at 40 they are wondering what they were thinking! I do not like tattoo’s at all personally….I think they look dirty and nasty. I saw a beautiful girl the other day with a huge tattoo across the top of her breasts…..how could she want to defile herself like that, especially since she was such a knockout! Can’t figure that out…..she did work at a Harley shop, maybe that is why?? I cannot believe that someone can make a choice like a tattoo that is permanent forever, unless taken off surgically…….how would you know how you would feel down the road in ten or twenty years! Our bodies are beautiful enough without putting ink all over them! One persons opinion! If you are trying to be creative, than draw a picture or create something……….

I think tattoos can be a deterrent to your career if they go overboard. IMO, they are OK if they can be covered with normal, everyday clothing. Anywhere else and it’s nobody’s business. I get tickled reading some of the comments, because ANY body modification or adornment of ANY kind could be just as distracting. And that would include some common hair styles and extreme amounts of make-up. To me, it gets down to what’s appropriate in the workplace. And that depends on the line of work you’re in. It wouldn’t be appropriate for a tattoo artist to wear Armani suits and Gucci shoes to work! On the other hand, I don’t expect my financial advisor to look like he’s headed for a biker bar!

Damn! We’ve become a “nation of the offended”! Get over it, people!

I see a lot of teenagers with visible tattoos (I’m a high school teacher) and it’s painfully obvious they’ve given no thought to possible career choices. Employers have the right to base their employment choices on body art. I have several tattoos, but I purposely get them where they do not show at work. My tattoos are on my chest leg, and arm, and all above the elbow and concealable with a golf shirt. I know my principal doesn’t care that I’m inked, but who knows what the next principal will think, or if I go for another teaching job.

It seems funny to me that there are so many comments on here that are negative toward tattoos and how they would never have one and that they are stupid, etc… But I never see any tattooed people calling out non tattooed people for not having them. Its about the individual.

I have several tattoos. They are large scale. But I’m also a banker. I wear a suit to work every day. If you walked into the office to talk to me, you wouldn’t know at all.

I don’t think I should be judged by what I do to my body. And on that point, I’ve read comments about God making us in His image. Yes, I’m a Christian too. But I have read and studied the word. There is no place in the new testament that says it is wrong to get a tattoo.

I work in a professional business setting where I frequently hire entry-level staff. I will not consider hiring any individual who has a tattoo or piercing that is visible in standard dress (this includes women who have “cute” tattoos on their feet or ankles). It speaks to a lack of professionalism and an attitude that “my personal choices are more important than the image I project for your business”.

Unacceptable.

It’s amazing to read through these comments. It seems the people that don’t have tattoos or have never considered them are the ones that think that all tattoos come from the wall of a tattoo parlor. I am an artist, as is my husband. ALL of our tattoos come from a design that we’ve come up with and allowed our tattoo artist to embellish upon. Nothing put on our bodies came from a wall. You will never see our tattoos on a wall somewhere. So, yes, tattoos are creative. They are a form of art. I’m proud to wear mine, both in visible sight and others not. I will get more tattoos and so will my husband, and if people wish to judge us, then so be it. But don’t be surprised when we judge you right back.

What if a an accomplished professional came into your office seeking employment. You will never convince me that you would turn that person away because of tatoos within reason of (course). You’re a capitalist and you would make allowances for someone who adds substantially to your bottom line. It’s the small fish that you can discriminate against because there are so many of them. If you would sacrifice talent for a look, that doesn’t make you professional but rather petty. So let’s get off the high horse, my friend.

This is a very debated topic. I myself am heavily tattooed. I also work for a large cellular company in regional headquarters. Some of my tattoo’s are visible some are not. I have never been denied a promotion or raise based upon my tattoo’s. I do however have commonsense, I know that If I am dealing with the big bosses it may not be appropriate to flaunt my chest piece, (which is tastefully done) however I know some may not want to see it. All of my tattoo’s can be covered, however I do show my chest piece more so than any other, due to v-neck shirts. I do get questions about it, such as whats the meaning or the ever popular did that hurt? Or why did you choose that on your chest? I simply tell them my children are my heart and I wear my little ones with pride. My tattoo is not a portrait, but has the significant meaning of my children. Once people learn my work ethics they forget about my ink. And it’s fun to show people that I am intelligent even though I am tattooed. It makes people wonder and rethink there initial conceptions of me. So I fully admit that if you have ink you are judged harshly by some. I would say that you must have thick skin to bear your Ink in the work place. You are judged. But along with that also comes the satisfaction that you may be able to change at least one persons opinion of “tattooed people” We are not all “trailer trash, uneducated, low life’s” Some of us just enjoy good art.

To “VAGuy”:

I agree that an “accomplished professional” will get consideration even with tattoos.

However, the argument here is that many young people with visible tattoos will never get the opportunity (rightly or wrongly) to become “accomplished” because of their tattoos.

You also wrote that the tattoos must be “within reason of (course)”. Herein lies the main issue. What may be “within reason” to you, is probably unacceptable to most.

I do not want my financial advisor, attorney, airline pilot, doctor, etc. to be sporting hideous visible tattoos. It shows a lack of judgment and forethought.

When I see someone with tattoos I generally am curious to know more about that person. A lot of them are great pieces of art. Some of them, not so much art as much as just something someone wanted to ink on themselves permanentely because they were bored. I have no problem dealing with people with tattoos as I think most people of my generation feel. I generally think that person is probably interested in visual arts, just like i am, and that means we share a common interest. By the way, I don’t have any tattoos. My parents would have a heart attack. I was also never able to think of anything I wanted permanently inked on myself.

An employee should be judged based on character and ability to perform the job, not on tattoos. Most of the trepidation about them is rooted in fear and religion, neither of which have any place in a contemporary workplace. I’d rather have a competent person with tattoos working for me than a shlub in a polo shirt.

Yep, y’all have the right to have them if you want….and I have the right to think you are friggin’ morons. If you want to show off something on your bodies, try going to the gym (like me) and getting toned and in shape….something worth looking at.

I think people who don’t have any tattoos are trash. I would never work with anyone or hire anyone who does NOT have some sort of body art. Sound like a stupid perspective? That’s because it is.

I wish I could say that I’m the same person with tattoos as I’d be without, but that’s not true. I am a better and happier person because of my tattoos and nipple piercings. I don’t care to justify or explain why I have what I have. It was my decision and I have been working on getting 1 tattoo for the past 19 years. For those ignorant readers, that means I have been getting tattooed for nearly 2 decades and am working towards connecting them all to form 1 big one. That’s my decision. They all can be covered up while I’m working. That’s the only time I intentionally keep them hidden. Why you ask? Again, for the ignorant readers, it’s the same reason as to why I wear a suit and keep my hair short; that’s what I have to do to be successful. I would prefer to wear shorts, no shoes and probably no shirt (I am male) but that’s not appropriate in my line of business.

Bottom line - I got my tattoos for ME, not YOU. If you don’t like them, don’t look. I promise I won’t judge you for not having any. I probably wouldn’t like you either way. That said, I represent the entire southeast in a conservative industry for a Fortune 500 company. My VP has several tattoos (which I will see once I earn my spot in the President’s Club and am sitting on a tropical beach celebrating success with him). I have owned companies, have intelligent and respectable children, a house worth over $500K and parents that respect my decisions. You don’t have to…

Oh, I forgot to say that I am also a staunch Atheist! How’s that for you???

I run a law office and would never consider hiring someone with visible tattoos. It says “I want to look like a gang member (or gang ho).”

Contrary to some post, it is NOT comparable to discriminating based on sex or race, since sex and race are not choices. But when you chose to get that flaming skull tattooed on your forearm or that meaningless “tribal” tattoo around your ankle, you made a bad choice and choices have consequences. If you get a Nazi swastica tattooed on your forehead you can’t walk around whining that people treat you like a Nazi. Likewise, get a “Thug Life” tattoo and don’t whine when people assume you are a thug.

I think that tatoos are horrible. I just think about when that person gets to be 70 - 80 and the tatoo is visible and sagging like the rest of the skin will do with time and age and then it’s really going to look horrible. If I interviewed a person with visible tatoos, I would complete the interview and tell them they will hear from me as soon as all applicants have been interviewed and I would instruct my secretary to draft them a thank you for coming to the interview letter that will explain that at this time we have selected another applicant, da,da,da,da! As soon as the applicant walks out the door, their app will go into file 13 (The Trash!). The same goes for eyebrow, nose, tongue and extensive (5 or more) holes in the ears! Oh, yes, I would be looking for those clues. You would never get the opportunity to represent the company I work for. If that is prejudiced, then so be it. I am sorry, but I just don’t think that tatoos and extensive holing of the body belongs in corporate America. By the way, I wouldn’t hire a female who came to interview in a pair of pants or if she came to interview with bare legs or stiletto heels. Yes, image is just that important when it comes to the workplace.

ATTITUDE IS MORE TACKY THAN A TATTOO! Who cares, and why is everyone having such a big deal about this. If you have a tattoo and you interview for a job, they shouldn’t judge you on it. That would be discrimination. Now if you have been employed with a company and decided to get a tattoo that is visible and you cannot cover, then yes, I believe a company can fire you for that. I got a tattoo after being with my current employer 7 years (a memorial to my little son, inside my left wrist where I can see it but I’ve always either worn long sleeves or bracelets that cover that area). My tat has received no discrimination…however, as a Black woman, I’ve noticed we’ve been openly discriminated against. We’ve been told braids & afros r not acceptable n the workplace…although it’s our natural hair texture that demands we wear these styles. Now that Don Imus drew attention to the discrimination & folks like Rev. Al Sharpton demanded justice for us, we’re starting to be accepted as is. I’ve always wondered why my co-workers from India get to come to work in their native dress attire, Muslim wear turbans & Catholic wear ash marks on their foreheads, but Black women can’t wear braids to work. Finally, I decided to stand up for my personal rights & go back to my natural hair. I’d suffered years of chemical damage as a result of perming (permanently straightening) my hair & knew it needed a break. I was surprised at the number of managers & employees that supported my decision & how they comment my styles. I plan to get another tattoo as a memorial to my beloved dog that went to doggie heaven unexpectedly two months ago (inside my upper left arm), but it may show partially n the summer as I don’t have a plan for covering it up.

To the folks that think a person sins if he gets a tattoo, please read the scripture where GOD says “I will not forget you. I have indelibly imprinted (engraved/tattooed a picture of you) on the palms of my hands.” (Isaiah 49:15-16 Amplified Bible). Both of mine tats allow me to carry the memory of my loved ones…just like GOD carries the memory.

All of my tattoos are hidden except for one on my leg and on the back of my neck when i wear my hair up without a collared shirt. When i interviewed i was asked if i had any or piercings because our main customer here is very chrisitan oriented and frowns upon them. I was honest and said yes I have both but they are not where they can be seen in the work place. I got hired of course and my bosses have seen a glimpse of a few that i have, no problem, it is their choice not to look or not to get them, but I am not judged. That is how it should be. How do I instantly communicate to the public my taste in motorcycles, body fetishes, death metal bands, Japanese calligraphy, and belief in the yin and yang of existence, my bottomless grief over the loss of 2Pac, or the number of punks I shanked in the joint?

My Space pages require too much typing! That’s time I could be spend watching “Miami Ink” or “Spongebob”!!! What are we, animals????

In all fairness, I have actually experienced that to which Darnell is referring in my career. I am a well educated, successful African-American male who works in a white-collar profession and whose resume will stack up reasonably well against most anyone. I happen to have a well-done tattoo of a solemn panther on the back of my left hand that I got while in college. While I present myself well in coat and tie interviews, it seems like the interviewers (who are often white) seem to stop listening to me and stop looking at my face once they notice my tattoo. A couple have actually had the nerve to start acting like I was merely taking up their time after seeing my hand. I dare anyone to not hire me based on my education or qualifications, so they apparently decide to never call me back once they see the harmless piece of body art on my hand instead of judging me on the collective package I bring to their table. If a company doesn’t want me to help them become wealthy just because of some ink on my skin, then it is their loss.

One the political hand though, I would not vote for Barack Obama. He wants to take too much of my money! LMAO

I only have 1 tattoo and it is on my neck. It is a hunk of swiss cheese that I had done to remind how much I miss dairy products since becoming a vegan.
