Do you buy or take your lunch?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The other day I was driving along Ga. 85 in Fayetteville and happened to pass by O’Charley’s.
I haven’t been to that restaurant in a long time, but I do remember their food was quite good as far as chain restaurants go. But what caught my eye was a large banner posted outside that said ‘Lunch $7.79 and up’.
I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t exactly sound like a bargain, to me. I’m sure they serve up some good eats and plenty of it for the price. But the dollar amount that might be more enticing to me would be somewhere around $4- $5 range.
I’d be curious to know if that price posted encouraged more customers or turned them off. Typically, when I’ve had an office job, I brought my lunch from home. I’ve always watched my money, but mainly, I just prefer to make it myself.
With that said…there are two things I’d like to hear from you : 1) Do you think $7.79 is a reasonable price for lunch? 2) If not, what is the amount that would be more appetizing to you? Oh, and by the way… do you take your lunch to work or do you purchase on a regular basis?

1.) Yes! $7.79 is too much. Maybe not for folks on a company expense account, but in these times they ought to be a good steward of company money or be out of a job. 2.) I’m with you $4 -$5 for an occasional lunch out price, because, yes, I usually take my lunch to work! Healthier, tastier, and more economical!

I almost always pack my own lunch. I can do in for months at a time. Today I’m having left over hamburger helper. It’s just lunch. Why spend all that money on just yourself. By dinner time you’re just going to be hungry again and eat something. It sounds like a waste to me. If I do decide to to go out for lunch please believe I’m going to keep it in the $5-$6 range. On rare occasions I may spend $7 or even $10 but no more than that. Plus I have a problem with the cleanliness of most of these restaurants. I’ll leave the expensive lunches to those who can afford it or are not interested in taking the time to pack their lunches.

Yes, I believe $7.79 is a reasonable price for the occassional lunch at a reputable eatery with decent food and quality customer service. Typically, when I go out for lunch and I spend more than $10, I make sure to eat only half of it and save the rest for dinner.
I’m a single person who doesn’t care for leftovers nor sandwiches so I choose not to pack a lunch very often because it would be a waste for me.

I think $7.79 is very reasonable for a hot lunch served to your table. A fast food value meal will set you back at least $5 and a meal at 5 Guys will run $10 easy. I’m fortunate enough to be able to go home for lunch—although I usually go out one a week. $7.79 sounds okay.

On most days I pack a lunch. I don’t have a problem with left overs. They actually taste better the next day to me. But occassionally I will have lunch out and $7.79 is not a bad price for a full (meat, vegetable and starch) lunch. I usually eat out about twice a week and then I pay no more than $5.00

“By dinner time you’re just going to be hungry again and eat something. It sounds like a waste to me.”
Yeah, I’m thinking of not going to sleep tonight, as I’ll just be tired again the next night.
And O’Charley’s isn’t Krystal. 8 bucks is fine. If it’s not, there’s always top ramen for like 20 cents.

I think that is a little on the high side considering how people are cutting back. I think they could offer a salad/soup combo or something similar for somewhere in the $5 range. I am not sure what kind of margin they are trying to produce, but I feel like business would pick up with a drop in price. I usually run to Target once a week during my lunch break and grab some meals for the week. When I do buy my lunch it is around $6 total. Remember that those prices on the sign probably don’t include a drink and there is always a tip.

KJ Notice at the end of my quote that you decided to comment on says TO ME. That’s how I feel. You comparing it to sleep is silly and doesn’t make any sense. I, notice I said I. I feel that at the end of the day that $7 or $8 buck spent on lunch is long forgotten and somewhat of a waste. Again that’s TO ME.

I’m with Sunny above (single - not doing leftovers).
I don’t bring a lunch - I may have brought lunch to work with me three times in 5 years, I just don’t do it. Besides, I prefer to eat leftovers the next night.
And I don’t buy the “it’s cheaper to bring lunch” argument, either because when I watch people walking in, the lunch bags are getting bigger and bigger until some are nearly six-pack cooler sized. You can’t convince me that my 5 or 6 dollar salad or sandwich or occasional slice of pizza is that much more expensive that what all you brought in that suitcase.
To answer the question, yes I think $7.79 is a reasonable price for lunch. I don’t eat at that particular resto so I’m not sure what the food is like and portion size, but I don’t think the price is THAT bad.

I usually bring my lunch but $7.79 is a great price for a sit down, occasional lunch. A Chick-fil-a sandwich combo is well over $5, almost $6 these days. So comparably $7.79 is well below average.

yes I bring my lunch daily…….$7.79 too much with the economy like it is, besides most restaurants are unsanitary so we pretty much take our chances when we eat out……to me $5 would be a bargin lunch.
