Do we need more teen hangouts?

With very few options in Fayetteville, local teenagers don’t have many places to go for entertainment.

There’s the bowling alley, the movie theater, Dixieland (an amusement park) and the usual selection of restaurants. Consequently, when I’ve driving around the environs I usually see them congregating at places, such as outside Arby’s, the parking lot in front of Michael’s and of course, at both movie theaters, Tinseltown and the dollar theater.

Personally, it doesn’t bother me at all. If they like to just “hang out” whether it’s to talk, skateboard or drool over someone’s car, then that’s fine with me. Obviously, if they are being destructive to property or causing harm to someone that’s another story. But since the days of malt shops and sock hops are long gone and we have no teen center in Fayetteville…what’s a teen to do?

Does it bother you when you seen teenagers hanging out somewhere? And do you think the city should provide some sort of activity center for teenagers? Did you grow up in Fayette County? If so, where were your favorite teen hangouts? Or, if you grew up elsewhere, was there a town hangout for teens?

Does it bother you when you seen teenagers hanging out somewhere? No, not really… if they are clean cut and just hanging out by their cars chatting it doesn’t bother me. Now if I see a group that looks like that could be up to something then that bothers me…

And do you think the city should provide some sort of activity center for teenagers? The County tried to do that a couple a years ago and the teenagers turned it into a sex club. So I am going to say no to this one.

Did you grow up in Fayette County? If so, where were your favorite teen hangouts? * Yes, I grew up in Fayetteville and by the time I was able to drive we hung out at Movies 10, Chickfila, Ruby Tuesdays, The Michaels Parking lot and our teenage jobs. I was working and going to school so I didn’t hang out a lot. When we did it was fun and we were not looking to start trouble. Fayetteville was safe back then too. If I was a teenager now I would be nervous to hang out in Fayetteville. DixieLand is really for the yong crowd. We also hung out at Dazzles sometimes…*

Hi Third Wheel- I didn’t know that Blimpie in the Fayette Pavilion closed down. I will have to stop by and check it out. Did you know that World Market, also in the Pavilion, is closing, too?

Hi Abby!

I had no idea that Blimpie had shut down. I use to work there while I was in high school between 1996 to 1998. I knew the owener at the time had sold the resturant but them seem to do pretty good business. The location was really totally wrong though. I know Blimpie use to get robbed a lot during the day and some at night. Maybe that is why they shut down? We will have to look into that. I was driving around Sunday and saw the signs for World Market. I have never ever been into that store. Maybe I will stop by this weekend and see what they have….

Thanks for the World Market tip. I know what may be a good hang out spot for teens. What about the place where Ultimate Fitness moved from. That is a pretty big place. What do you think?

Clayton is building a bunch of recreation centers, Maybe we could all go over there and hang out!

If the teen hangouts gave the teens what they want: music, games, whatever, then maybe the teens would use it. Adults would have to make sure it didn’t turn rough, sexual, or druggie. Maybe the teens ought to be consulted to find out what they want.

You should probably carry a billy club to put those longhairs in their place, just to be on the safe side.
