Inspiring church message boards

Here in Fayette County, I once counted some 90 plus churches.

And many of those churches have signs in front of their buildings that typically have some kind of inspiring message.

I once saw a sign that said “Got Faith?” I saw another that said: “Praying does a body good.”

Recently, however, I saw a message that quite frankly has me scratching my head. It said: Evolution is a fairy tale for adults.” I have some idea what this means, but I don’t want to color whatever you might be thinking.

So, take a shot at this. What do you think they are trying to say in that statement? And can you think of other witty or unusual church messages?

I saw that one too! There is far more scientific evidence that evolution is not just a theory but proven to be an accurate account of the history of the earth. I understand that for literal interpreters of the bible evolution seems to contradict everything they believe in. The only way to hold onto their narrow belief in a book that has been carried through the ages by word of mouth, then transcribed by many mortals with their own mortal belief slants, is to debunk the most rational, and proven truth about how humans came to be. Ignorance is bliss but denying reality doesn’t change reality

I never understood why I can’t believe in God and evolution. I believe that we all evolve and adapt to our enviornments. I just believe that the hand of God controls it. Those who do not adapt lack faith and without faith nothing can be accomplished. I also realise that the Bible was written by man and is slanted and probably biased as well. That being said I think it is also a wonderful book that carries the traditions of our (Christian) people and teaches us the how to live simply and peacefully.

Where is a fossil record of a species in transition? What is this proof of evolution? Even carbon dating has been proven to be based on a theory. I’m from Missouri—show me. It takes just as much faith to be an evolutionist as a Christian. At least I have witnessed miracles first hand so I find the Bible easier to believe. Both creationism and evolution are THEORIES that need to be taught as THEORIES.

I’ve seen a lot of stupid signs outside of churches. Most of them to me are not inspiring. They are just something trying to get you to come inside and drop a lil dough. Annie the only miracle I’ve ever witnessed in the church is how fast the money disappears unaccounted for.

I guess if you are narrow minded you would take a stab at what others believe. I think for those of us who believe in the Creation this message board makes sense, just as to those who don’t it makes no sense. Personally I am worried about what others think. Your faith is personal and if you chose to share it thats all well and good too. This is still America, right?

Creation and evolution, which is real and which is theory? Well if you want to beleive you came froma monkey that ok with me. Who am I to judge? How most people act it back up evolution theory. If people believe God created them, then why do people act and mistreat thier body like they do? As for miracles, just look around, take a good look at the mountains and ocean, better yet just look at your self, we all are a fine example of a miracle.

I remember as a child hearing a story about a man-god who was - born unto a virgin - mothers name was Meri (or Mary) - was of royal decent - an angel announced his birth - shepards were there to witness the birth - the king tried to have him killed - not much info between the ages of 12 and 30 - baptized at age 30 - walked on water - cast demons - healed the sick - raised the dead - gave a big sermon on a mountain - died by cruxifixion - died next to 2 theives - buried in a tomb

any of this sound familiar….it’s the story of Horus. Egyptian god worshiped thousands of years before the 1st century.

but you guys are probably right….the Bible is an original and exact work of nothing but the truth

isnt it even possible that your beliefs could be wrong? I’m not saying they ARE wrong…I’m asking if there’s even a chance they COULD be wrong.

1500 years ago, people KNEW the earth was the center of the universe 500 years ago, the brightest minds in the world KNEW the earth was flat. 50 years ago, we thought the atom was the smallest particle, until we split it open and discovered sub-atomic particles.

so are you going to be so obtuse to say that there’s no way you could be wrong about this?

@Mark…you need more than proof. I too, have seen miracles, many within my own family. An uncle with cancer who was given 3 months to live, and after prayer, there was no sign of the cancer and hasn’t been for 35 years!. I had a cousin born with spina bifida. We prayed to God for her to be healed, and she was cured of the S.B. These were things the doctors could NOT cure. Why? What difference does it make to you? Believe what you want to believe, but what’s the point in trying to put those of us who live by faith down. I used to love church signs — they seemed to offer little nuggets of truth & wisdom. I never got quite as much inspiration from the Bible, even when I considered myself Christian. The last 6 years, I’ve moved far away from religion. I don’t miss it at all. Now the church “sound bites” just sound like recycled reruns from people who can’t come up with anything better. Which does lead to the question someone else is bound to ask…why am I reading this blog, then?

Some questions may never be answered…

Anyway, peace to all at year’s end.

Guys,

I do not understand how you can think that something as wonderful as a human being is the product of something like evolution. Think about everything that we are able to do and think. We are made perfectly in God’s image. I cant not see how people think that we came about by chance. And to answer an earlier question about why God lets some people live and others die horrible deaths. God has a plan for each and every one of us. If he knows that giving you cancer will save someone’s life or make them a believer then he will give you cancer. If God knows that if he gives someone cancer for a few months than someone will be saved than he will take it away if it is not going to save anyone else. God knows all and sees all. I can understand that everyone has doubts about how this can be real but think about all of the wonderful things in life and then tell me how this can not be real.

Joe,

I am not trying to argue with you because I feel that that would do no good. I believe that science is the pitfall of the human race. I understand that we all want to be more educated but science is what gets in the way of faith. Faith is very hard to come by when you are always trying to disprove everything that is written in the Bible. A lot of people today feel that they have to see it to believe it but there are things in this world that are invisible that I believe in like love, happiness, anger, covetness, etc. I think that faith in God is one of these invisible emotions that is in people’s hearts. If you really want to find what makes us have faith I challenge you to try and pick up a Bible. It gives answers to all of lifes questions and provides us with simple rules to live by and the best thing about it is that everyone that reads it has their own unique interpretation. I hope that maybe you can find what it is you are looking for.

Emily,

I know that you are trying to help but I want them to take this the right way. Please do not think that you can use faith as a back up plan just in case there is a hell. That will get you no better chance at seeing the kingdom of God. For you to become a citizen of heaven you have to believe that there is a God and that he sent his son to die on the cross for your sins. I know that different religions believe in different ways of getting to heaven and I am not going to say that anyone is wrong. I believe that it is in each one of our hearts to decide how to get to heaven.

This is totally off-topic but I don’t seem to be the first. Joe, and other similar minded people, why so much hate towards people of faith? I live my life based on what I believe and I share those beliefs with those around me (by my words AND actions). If they choose, based on their own free-will, to agree with me then that is wonderful. If they have different beliefs I certainly don’t call them names or ridicule them. If I did that to everyone who disagrees with me, on any subject, than I would be pretty lonely. There’s no reason to hate us, we certainly don’t hate you. for those who want to, flame me, I don’t care. And sorry for the word wall.

By Joe

AP, what I’m looking for is an answer to why people believe in something they can’t see when tangible evidence is right in front of their eyes. How can you call science the pitfall of the human race when science has provided us with all of the modern conveniences we enjoy, as well as the advancements in technology and medicine. Its all because of science.

And I also want to know why people live a lie b/c they are afraid to go to some fictional place below the ground. And I want the answer to why people have to suffer. There is a flaw in the system if god allows his people to suffer and I can’t get behind that.

Emily, if you knew your history you would take back that statement about how great the world would be. You know how many people have died in the name of god, right? Ever hear of the Crusades?

Most laws are not based on god; they are based on what people wrote about what god supposedly said. However, the bible does provide a good basis for a moral code, I will not deny that.

My head hurts now. If Christians would stop being judgemental and damning everyone to hell every 5 seconds, maybe non-Christians would get off your case a bit.

Grammaw, they prayed and laid hands on my Aunt for her cancer, but she croaked anyway. The only folks I’ve ever seen healed in church are the ones that had no real problem. Why is it that the supposedly healings always happen to someone with a sickness that can’t be seen with the natural eye such as Cancer? Why is it that the person that sits in the wheelchair week after week or the child with downs syndrome never gets healed?

@So Dark the Con of Man 11:01am, that’s not proof you’re describing. That’s an observation. The actual fact is that nobody really knows why the book falls to the ground. Gravity is the current theory, and a lot of observations seem to back it up. Just the same for why a ball in a wagon moves to the rear of the wagon when your child pulls it along. Nobody really knows why it happens, but Newton’s theories of mass at rest and in motion (inertia) explain it well for most observations.

If you limit yourself to merely what you can see, feel, taste, etc. then you are missing out on a lot of things. There’s no reason to deny anyone how they feel about faith, religion, their personal or public views of a supreme being, positive or negative. I don’t understand the bashing. If someone believes in something there’s little you can do about it. Don’t publicly denigrate them because of it.

Another poster put creationism and evolution as equitable theories. The proper terminology here is that creationism is a hypothesis, an alternative explanation of observations. Evolution is a theory, backed up by many disparate observations, some direct and some inferred. They are nowhere near equal just because one can say they are both theories. Unfortunately this is where many people lack understanding. They point to a small handful of disputed things and say, “See? Evolution is only a theory, and so is creationism”. They don’t seem to understand that there is much, much more backing up evolution, but without some understanding of how science actually works they won’t be able to understand.

Gravity, electricity, strong and weak atomic interactions - they are all theories. Yet we can make predictions on these theories that are quite accurate. Consider power stations, fission reactors, driving a Formula 1 car at 250+ mph, etc. We also make predictions based on evolutionary theory - many of you take drugs and medicines that are a direct outcome of these predictions. I may be wrong, but I’m not aware of any predictions made from the creationism hypothesis (that can be proved or disproved).

Joe,

First I would like to know what evidence you are talking about? If it is about evolution I believe that it is a theory. I also wonder why the other primates have not evolved or are evolving? I will agree with you that we do have some of the same characteristics but I by no means think that my ancestors evolved.

I know that you are probably going to argue that the cycle of human evolution is complete now because we are now the strongest species but if the primates are not as strong don’t you think that by Darwins theory that they would keep evolving into humans.

Although science has brought many great things into this world, it has also brought a lot of sin with it. Example being the internet. It is great for research purposes and many other things but it also brings porn, adultery, etc.

Also, how do you know that hell is fictional? Do you have any proof that it is not real?

Also, there are now flaws in God’s system. He is perfect and will always be. As for the suffering, God is also a just God. The Bible states that people will reap what they sow even if it is their kids or grandkids. Just look at David. After he committed adultery it was his family that suffered not David.

I also believe that telling people that they are going to hell if they do not commit is a problem. Yes I do believe that people will go to hell if they do not believe but I really think that it scares people away more than it scares people into believing. I think we as christians are to plant a seed. If it grows than great, but do not keep hounding non believers because it does not work.

Joe,

Thanks for agreeing with me on this:

Please do not think that you can use faith as a back up plan just in case there is a hell.

It is pretty sad that many people actually think that this plan will work.

FOLKS - science isn’t the enemy (unless it doesn’t fit your mythology), it isn’t a religion. It is simply the study of how things work. It results in good and bad - just like religion.

‘something as wonderful as a human being…’ Guess you don’t read the paper much.

‘science is the pitfall of the human race’. Science is the BASIS of the human race. It is what separates us from the apes. Sorry if it gets in the way of your ‘faith’. geez

‘why so much hate towards people of faith?’ Because they expose themselves as such hypocrites. They are on billboards and TV. They have megachurches and live large on the income. They rape children and blame it on god. They hate others who believe differently. Most of us thinkers couldn’t care less what the sheep believe. Just stop talking about it, passing laws to strengthen it, voting as if it is the only issue.

‘I never understood why I can’t believe in God and evolution’… You can. You just can’t believe in the christian church and evolution. The church once tortured you for that. now they just threaten you with hell and isolation.

JD,

I agree that human beings do sin. Everyone sins including the ones who rape and live large off of church income.

I am not justifying what they do because it is wrong but people do sin. What I was saying is that humans are born perfect. They choose to sin.

I am with you on the religion thing. I think that is where we are going wrong. We judge people because the sprinkle instead of dunk and other stupid things like that instead of trying to tell them to follow their hearts and what the Bible tells them.

No I do not believe that science is the basis of the human race. We have always been above the apes in species status. I believe that our minds and hearts put us above the apes. God gave us a larger brain for a reason.

I do believe that some parts of science can be good (ex.medicine) but in my earlier statement I was mainly talking about the bad of science like cloning, abortion, porn, etc.

Hey Albert, old Einstein also said that everything is relative, but for the volumns of relative truth, there must be one ABSOLUTE truth. A few have figured ouyt what that Truth is, and it gives understandable meaning to everything else.

So Dark the Con of Man @ 8:25am: “so are you going to be so obtuse to say that there’s no way you could be wrong about this?”

You make an excellent point, but fail to turn it around on the other way as well. I read a great article once by a man who said, although there were some things he had to accept on faith because not everything could be proven scientifically, he chose to live his life as a Christian.

If he possibly was wrong, then the worst that happened was he spent a lot of time in a church where the message of ‘love your brother’ was preached, he spent money supporting mission work where hospitals & schools were built in poverty-stricken countries, he spent time & money supporting local charities (pantries, Christmas angels, etc.), and more or less tried to live up to the ideal of a living good & moral life.

If he was possibly wrong by choosing to live as an atheist, he might possibly spend eternity in a very bad way.

He decided that taking the chance of being wrong believing as a Christian was a better idea than being possibly choosing wrong to not believe in God.

In your own words, “so are you going to be so obtuse to say that there’s no way you could be wrong about this?” And I’m asking this in a kind way, not trying to be a nasty. Just an interesting way to think about it!

So Dark the Con of Man,

Can’t be right about Horus. Crucifixion didn’t exist 1000 years before Christ. The Horus stuff originated with Gerald Massey, an English poet, born 1828, died 1927.

That’s what makes the prophecies of the Messiah so compelling when you consider they were written over 500 years before crucifixion existed and Jesus ends up fulfilling them.

Since people are quoting Einstein out of context to support atheism, here are some other quotes from Einstein (who was probably more of an agnostic):

“Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.”

“In view of such harmony in the cosmos which I, with my limited human mind, am able to recognize, there are yet people who say there is no God. But what really makes me angry is that they quote me for the support of such views.”

“I’m not an atheist and I don’t think I can call myself a pantheist. We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. It does not understand the languages in which they are written. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangements of the books, but doesn’t know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God.”

Pandora, calm down. How can you say there is no relevance (see, that is what proper grammar looks like) to evolution? Any and all scientific theories/facts have TONS of practical relevance to humans. The more we learn about our world and how it works, the better and longer we should live.

Annie, I totally agree with you (and I am from Kansas). I have studied astronomy and everything points to creationism (an infinite beginning and end determined by a Creator). Yes, plants and animals may change over time, but they don’t change into each other, and humans are separate. Even Darwin discounted his theory at his death bed.
