Should we have a school uniform dress code?

Did any of you read the story about Clayton County students and the new “uniform dress” code starting next year?

Here’s an excerpt:

All 50,000 Clayton County students will be required to wear “uniform dress” starting next school year.

Though not as stringent as uniforms per se, the new uniform dress policy will require students to wear khaki pants, skirts, polo shirts and sweaters of the same color, Jonesboro High School Principal Carl Jackson said. The policy prohibits blue jeans and T-shirts.“I think it will help with academics, but I hope the policy has some teeth,” Jackson said Thursday night. “It may be hard to enforce.”

About 60 parents cheered Thursday night when Jackson announced the new dress rule at a PTA meeting.

“I support it 100 percent,” said Wanda McDowell, treasurer of the Jonesboro High PTA and mother of two Jonesboro students. “It keeps the kids focused on what’s important.”

In August, the district implemented the uniform dress policy at all elementary schools and some middle schools. At the time, school officials said they were holding off on making high school uniforms mandatory.

Does anybody think the Fayette County Board of Education should consider adopting this policy? While I understand why some people might think this will help students stay on track with their studies, I’m not convinced this is the answer…especially in the high school arena.

Lets face it, that age group, especially girls, love to show off the latest fashion and forcing them to wear khaki pants and skirts might prove to be more of an annoyance than anything else. Then the kids rebel and then the cycle starts all over again. So, back to the question….No matter where you live, would you like your school board to enact this policy?

NO! It’s not right for us to have to wear uniforms. That’s for private schools - and some private schools don’t even wear uniforms. This is a PUBLIC school system. What does it look like if we wear uniforms. They really just need to enforce the dress code that they have way more strictly. Think about it - we already have students rebeling about the dress codes (tuck shirts, etc.). If thats the case, just imagine what’s gonna happen when you make them wear uniforms. It’s just not right…
