Career Center comes to Fayette

If all goes as planned, Fayetteville could be home to a Goodwill store and career center, adding more than 60 jobs to the county.

The original proposal wanted to bring the center to Peachtree City, replacing the Kroger supermarket, along Ga. 54. But the residents weren’t happy with the idea and so Kroger reconsidered its closure of the supermarket and Goodwill said it would look elsewhere. If the new location in Fayetteville is approved, it would be behind Picadilly Cafeteria on Ga. 85 and would be 25,000 square feet.

As reported by The Citizen Newspaper: In addition to adding a retail location, the career center would offer prospective employees tips on creating resumes and interviewing skills.

“There’s a similar center located in Macon that has a five-star restaurant attached to it. Students can study culinary arts and then move into the restaurant,” said Matt Forshee, director of Fayette County Development Authority.

Forshee added the average salary of the workers is expected to be around $35,000. The Development Authority will hold a public hearing on the issuing of the bonds Sept. 29 at noon in its courthouse offices.

So Fayetteville-ians…what do you think? Are you alright with this center coming to town? I sure am! Why wouldn’t we want a place where people can better their futures and financial status? Let me know if you think or feel differently about this impending addition to Fayetteville.

Do you show your political support on your car?

During this election season I’ve seen a few, but not many, bumper stickers. I can’t even say if I’ve seen more McCain/Palin stickers or more Obama/Biden stickers but, truth be told, I wouldn’t want to post that kind of personal preference on my automobile.

Let’s be honest…when you see a bumper sticker with the candidate you DON’T want…don’t you just kind of want to give ‘em a little tap with your bumper. Come on…you can admit it.

Maybe, in this volatile era, that’s why I don’t see as many as I’ve seen in past election years. But here’s a little side note to this. I just received an e-mail from my homeowner’s association saying I can’t post political signs in my yard or in the window of my house.

Not that I’d want to, but it’s not like these signs are an eyesore. That’s another blog. Anyway, back to the bumper sticker issue. Do you have one on your car endorsing your candidate of choice? And if not, would you be willing to stick one of them on for all to know?

My favorite cool treat

Even though the weather is cooling down I still get a hankering for a sweet and cool treat on a regular basis.

So I’m going to share the place I frequent nearly every week. It’s Rita’s Italian Ice and it’s located in Peachtree City on Ga. 54, just past Wal-Mart. They have the most amazing assortment of flavors of Italian ice.

My personal favorite (at the moment) is pumpkin pie. Yes, imagine taking a spoonful of an icee sort of treat that, no kidding, tastes like pumpkin pie. And it’s not even Thanksgiving yet!

My daughter’s personal favorite is mint chocolate chip. The flavors change daily, so stock up when you go, if you find your favorite. But besides Italian ice, they have custard, which is like ice cream, but with a really smooth texture.

Of course they have regular ice cream, too. It really is a must-try place. Check out their website, www.ritasptc.com, and see for yourself. I don’t even think the cooler temps will keep me away from this place. Check it out for yourself or tell me if you’ve been and let me know your opinion.

What with these die-hard Dawg fans?

I don’t know how to say this so I’ll just come right out with it- I’m not a football fan.

Please don’t be disgusted with me, it’s just that no matter how many times my husband or friends try to explain it to me, it just goes in one ear and out the other. I like to watch if even if I don’t understand just because a few simple explanations have somehow stuck in my brain.

But my real question has to do with college football. I am the proud parent of a UGA student, who like me, often scratches her head trying to figure out what’s going on. No matter, I obviously route for UGA. But when I’ve met people who didn’t attend UGA, or have no friends or relatives that attended and are UGA fans.

I wonder what connects them to the Georgia Dogs and their football schedule? What is it about that school that they cheer for? For that matter what makes people route for Ga. Tech if they have no connections with that school? So while I may not understand the rules of football I’m really curious to understand the psychology of supporting a college football team if you or a family member didn’t attend.

What’s your cut off time for phone calls?

At my home, most evenings during the week are spent watching television.

Every once in a while the phone rings, but it’s usually sales. Every once in a while it’s a sales call around 8:45 p.m., which pushes the time boundary for me. My personal rule is: I don’t call anyone, unless it’s an emergency, past 9 p.m.

I also don’t call before 9 a.m. So, when my phone rings around 10”ish at night,” it makes my heart skip a few beats. I look at the caller ID and make sure it’s not a relative and then take a deep sigh of relief, when it’s not.

I’ve told my daughter who is at college about this time issue so she knows. Don’t even get me started about the phone ringing at 2 a.m. and it’s a wrong number. Those calls usually make me jump out of bed.

Some folks have no problem receiving calls up until 11 p.m. and later, and that works for them. What about you? Do you have a cutoff time for making phone calls in the evening or in the morning?

Wedding drama: No children, please

My friend has a daughter who will be married in the Spring. Like any important event there’s lots of planning to be done and opinions to consider.

Here is the low down on the wedding so far: My friend is paying for the 125 guests that are invited. The extra money need for the 40 guests, the groom’s mother wants to add, will be paid by the groom’s parents. So far so good… sort of.

Here’s the dilemma: My friend and her daughter do not want any children to attend except those that are in the wedding. I’m not going to condemn it or condone it. That is simply what they want. They have their reasons and we’ll leave it at that. The groom and his parents, on the other hand, want to invite a number of children (around 11 kids ranging in age from 6 -10 ) who are family members, cousins and such.

My friend doesn’t want to be difficult, but this is one thing she and her daughter really want to stick to. At the moment, they are kind of at an impasse, and could use some thoughts on the matter. What is your advice, and have you ever been involved in a situation similar to this one?

Do you avoid restaurants with live music?

Pardon me for sounding like a negative Nancy, but…I’m not really crazy about going to restaurants if they have live music.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love music- of all kinds- but I really prefer to listen while I’m in my car or at home. I’ve been to a couple of Fayetteville restaurants - that shall remain nameless- that offer great food, but when the music is playing (typically on Fridays and Saturdays) it’s really difficult to have a conversation.

I can feel my veins bulging out of my neck as I strain to pronounce certain words. Now, I know what you’re thinking… don’t bother going on those days when there’s live music, and trust me, I don’t.

But I’m curious, does it bother you when you’re eating and trying to have a conversation? Maybe it’s just me showing my age, but I’d like to get some feedback about this one. Does live music or even canned music that is played too loudly irritate you while you dine out?

Happy with Georgia’s peachy nickname?

As I drive around the metro Atlanta area, I’m constantly reminded that Georgia is known as the “The Peach State,” a fact that is well documented on many license plates.

I actually think that’s a great nickname for our state. It describes something about us in a kind of cute way. You know like we’re a “peach” of a state or we’re as cute as a peach.

Well, maybe that one doesn’t work as well, but I think you get my drift. I researched a few others and Arizona is “The Grand Canyon State;” Florida is “The Sunshine State.”

But I’m curious… are any of you unhappy with our state’s nickname? And if not, what nickname would you like? And please remember… let’s keep it clean.

Thoughts for a labor-free day

Since it’s Labor Day and many of you are hopefully enjoying the day off, I thought I’d throw a few random questions your way.

Since it is a holiday of sorts, these aren’t mind-bending questions, just things I’ve been pondering. Here goes:

1)What does the bumper sticker “Pray for Riverdale” mean to you? 2) Have you ever seen those small black rectangular bumper stickers with a royal blue stripe running horizontally? What is their significance? 3) When someone is trying to merge into a lane, why do some drivers speed up and then make it difficult for that person trying to get in? 4) And finally, what is your idea of a labor-free day?
