What’s in a (street) name?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Over the years I’ve lived on many streets -some with great fun all American sounding names, like Mabery Road- and others with a whimsical feel, like Via Edgardo Negri, which translates to Black Eddy Street in Italian.
As you read this blog, I’m on vacation in Florida and find myself, again, checking out street names. Here on Anna Maria Island (by Sarasota) the names are kind of bland, like Pine, Oak and Cedar.
But believe me, I’m spending most of the time looking at the magnificent gulf and not studying street names. But recently I started wondering how I’d feel if I lived on a street that had a name that wasn’t very appealing, like maybe Pinhead Avenue. Eeewwww. Or Dump Street.
In my neighborhood in Fayetteville we have lovely street names like Scenic Pass and Overlook Court. I’m happy with the name of my street I live on. How about you? Do you like the name of your Street, Avenue, Court or Lane? And if you could choose the name of the street where you reside what would it be? How about a little Wisteria Lane?
