Should subdivisions bar political signs?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Just recently the managers of our subdivision sent out an e-mail to all residents letting them know they can’t post political or advertising signs of any kind.
I can just imagine some of the irritated e-mails the managers are receiving as you read this blog.
To be sure, I would never put a sign on my front lawn declaring my political preference. Nor would I put one up regarding a business (though I might want to if I offered something useful to the residents).
I understand the reasoning. Aesthetically, it’s not very pleasing to the eye to see a sign stuck in the ground as you drive around. And I guess if you made your political bent known to the entire neighborhood you might get some hate mail or maybe a little harassing. Who knows?
It makes sense that they don’t want cars up on bricks in the driveway, but would one little sign really hurt anybody? We put bumper stickers on cars and sometimes have cars in the driveway (alright, so that’s a stretch).
If you received an e-mail of this sort, what would you think? Would it bother you?

Denying people’s right to put a politcal sign in their yards is denying them their Constitutional Right to Free Speech. I plan to put a sign in my yard once my candidate selects his VP. If anyone tells me to take it down, I will refuse. I will also get a lawyer. Let’s see how much they really want to push it. Let them pay for their own lawyer and let’s go to court - because they will lose. Free Speech takes precendence over neighborhood covenants anyday. I’d be willing to bet the Supreme COurt would see it that way, too.

When you buy in a covenant community you agree to abide by the rules and if you disagree with them DON ‘T move there. Sound like you are the kind of person that thinks you do not have to obey the rules..REMEMBER, you signed the covenants when you bought !!!
