Economy hits a local favorite

A lot of people in Fayetteville aren’t happy right now because a local (sort of) establishment is closing it’s doors.

June 28 will be the last day of business for the restaurant Village Cafe.

Tom Shaver, the owner for the past five years said there are many reasons for shutting down, some which are obvious.

“Our lease is up and everybody is cutting back. Every cost we incur is going up. For Fayette County, we are at the upper end of the market and our pricing is a little higher than some and when things slow down we are the first to get hurt.”

At the moment, Shaver has no plans to re-open in another location.

The original owner opened the restaurant in 1990 and Shaver bought it five years ago. “It’s been a good run,” he said. “We built a reputation as a really good restaurant and have had lots of really loyal guests, but clearly not enough.”

Here we go again. Another establishment is closing.

I haven’t eaten there in a long time, but I do remember the food being exceptional. It always reminded me of the kind of place my parents might have frequented-you know, it had a little bit of the dated dark look- but that didn’t take away from some amazing entrees and desserts.

Do you have any memories of Village Cafe you’d like to share?

Yes, I have very found memories of the restaurant… My wonderful mom has worked at the Village Café ever since 1990. It’s sad and shocking that the Village is closing but it was long overdue. The food was great and I should know because I got sample everything on the menu. The location is what was killing it though. Back in the early 90’s when Movies 10 use to be a normal movie theater, you could easily grab a movie and grab dinner and be on your merry now. Now some of us are too afraid to get out the car in that area. I mean we have a Food Depot, a dollar general, and a dollar movie theater. Then next door is the Village. Something doesn’t fit right does it? I know a lot of the older crowd will miss the Village Café but that is all who could afford to eat there. Also it is a local restaurant because you can not go to Clayton County and eat at a Village Café…… They will be missed but maybe the original owner Patrick Boutier will open up another restaurant……

I am so sorry to take this blog off-topic, but I would like to thank Mary Davis for her service. The decisions made were fair and based in good judgement. The entire organization all over the state is politically driven and biased. Many caseworkers are forced to choose between their jobs or doing the right thing. I applaud you for your efforts in truly protecting children and not personal interests. Good luck to you and God bless.
