Fayetteville retail: Going, going, gone…

With all the store closings (or soon to close) going on in Fayetteville, I’m wondering what will be next.

Here’s my latest count: 1) Goody’s 2) Friedman’s Jewelers 3) Traditions in Tile 4) Onyxx restaurant 5) Linens n’ Things 6) MacAlister’s Deli 7) Johnny Carino’s 8) Ted’s Montana Grill 9) Los Toribios

This is my prediction about the next (big box) store to close: H H Gregg in the Fayette Pavilion. When I drive by the parking lot it is rarely full. And the few times I’ve been in there, it’s rarely crowded.

I hope I’m wrong and that they continue to thrive in these hard economic times. I guess time will tell.

Do you want to make a prediction about the next place to close no matter where in the county?

The store closings are not Fayette County related. They’re economy related. Many of the stores are closing because the parent companies have declared bankruptcy. Let’s don’t make it sound like there’s something lacking in Fayette County.

I agree with CherylS. Most of those stores went out of buisness across the country not just here. The deli didn’t have very good food and was basically the same as the Atlanta Bread com. Johnny Carinos, bad chain restaurant food. Onyx the owner told us we were all basically hick white trash, so I did not even attempt to insult her by spending any money there. Onyx going out of buisness was not a loss, but a gain for Fayette County.

The pavillion is filled with low end stores. It looks like a trashy Riverdale stip mall, so no upscale or desirable stores will move in there. If they had Frontgate, Tommy Bahama, Smith/Hawkin, Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, JJill, Abercrombie, Restoration Hardware, Urban Outfitters, DSW, Brookstone, Nordstrom, Discovery Channel Store, Coach, etc. I would shop there. I have to go to Buckhead where my money is appreciated.

If the pavillion had been designed to be charming like an old downtown square it would have maybe attracted better stores. People would have been able to stroll from store to store and it would have been fun to shop there. As it is now, it is a waste of space, not worth the effort.

Okay CherylS and Savannah, what do you think keeps those good stores and restaurants away from Fayetteville ? And what would you do to change that ? That’s the question here. What we lack in Fayette county is a county planning commission with enough foresight to develop business plans to attract them and KEEP them here.

To PDB: Again I say: blame the economy. I love Fayetteville and shop the pavillion stores. I’d love to see the stores remain here. Goody’s (and others) isn’t leaving because of the Fayette county planning commission. It’s closing because the parent company declared bankruptcy and they are choosing to close stores that aren’t the multi-million dollar producers. For the stores to stay here, more shoppers would have to spend more money there. How do you suggest we accomplish that? How can you MAKE people shop a particular store?

Can you make people spend money they do not have regardless of the high-end product or smaltzy decorations of buildings?

Look for a lot more store closings.

Pardon my interruption.

I know that there are a lot of soccer fans in Fayette and wanted to find a way to promote a new soccer blog.

This blog is being run by a former Fayette resident. It’s full of info about everything from MLS to the European and South American teams.

With the Us team currently in Europe playing friendly’s and the Euro Cup about to start, I encourage anyone interested to check out this interesting blog and support a fellow Fayetter.

Well…the ajc seems to be preventing links to outside sources. Here is the web address: soccerisfutbol.com.

Thanks for your attention.
