The joke wasn’t too funny this time
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I know April Fool’s Day is past, but a friend of mine told me about an April Fool’s Day joke her 19-year-old daughter played on her.
Here’s the story and give me your take on this joke if this was your 19-year-old daughter, son, niece, nephew, cousin or whatever.
Here’s a little background info: Amanda (not her real name) and Jason (not his real name) 20, have been dating for well over a year. Things are fine, both are in college and working.
Now here’s what happened: It was 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night when the phone rang at Amanda’s mothers’ home. (Just the fact that the phone rang at that hour was a little alarming to Amanda’s mom).
Amanda is “yelling into the phone” with happiness and excitement. “Oh my gosh Mom, guess what? Jason and I just got engaged! We are so excited. Can you believe it? I’m so happy!”
Amanda’s mom is stunned and furious and let’s her daughter know she’s not happy. First there’s complete silence on the phone.
“What? Are you kidding? Amanda, I’m not happy at all with this news. I don’t think now is the right time and you two really need to think about…. blah, blah, blah.”
Amanda interupts: “Mom, April Fools!”
Needless to say, Amanda’s mom was even more furious. She thought it was a really bad joke and made sure her daughter knew she didn’t approve.
As I heard the story, I was kind of laughing inside, but didn’t want my friend to know it was humorous.
So, I just said “Yeah, that would be irritating.”
But the more I thought about it, the more I thought, that’s what the day is all about, even if the prank falls into the evening hours of the “day.”
So what do you think? Was that such a bad joke? Or did it kind of sort of cross the line?

I think the mom needs to let it go. It’s not like her daughter called, and said she was pregnant!

Why would she be mad in the first place? 20 yrs old, engaged - sounds normal. She must not like Jason, or she’s pretty uptight.
It’s likely her daughter didn’t expect her to be angry about it.

It’s funny! Heck, I would think that the mother would be HAPPY to know that her daughter had found someone special.

I would be MORE upset if she called and said she had eloped, or was p.g. Engaged, these days, means absolutely NOTHING.
