Let’s be smart about retail development

Do any of you remember the now closed Hollywood Video store in the Fayette Pavilion?

It was inside the shopping center, but visible from Ga. 85 and was empty for well over a year.

Well, I drove by yesterday and now it’s a mattress store.

I don’t mean to be critical, but really, do we need another mattress store? I wish somebody would have opened some sort of mini Harry’s Market -or maybe a Whole Foods Market kind of place.

Better yet, I would have loved it if it was a Trader Joe’s.

For me that would have been the perfect space for the perfect place. If you could have chosen a business for that space what would it be?

I have no problem with a mattress store- either should you. sleep is a major contributor to health and mattress stores will pay its fair share of taxes and help the community by providing jobs and stability without impacting traffic, noise and potential crime

Another mattress store is just part of the “shlocking up” of the whole area. One, or better yet none, are all we need. Go to the mall or some “mattress retail zone” (like they have for carpets/rugs, cars etc.) I agree Abby, a Whole Foods, Trader Joes or Fresh Market would be nice, however, all three already said NO to the new retail area by the Hampton Inn. They must know something about the area that we are not seeing or are refusing to see (read-believe). I guess a Patagonia or REI would also say the same. What a shame.

Ms.Brunks:

You would probably be much happier living in Gwinett County. Then the rest of us can enjjoy the new mattress store in peace and keep our front porch lights off.

It is not so much that it is the mattress store, I think it is that it is another mattress store or another nail place or another mexican restaurant… I think what she means is that there is no diversity of types of stores or places to shop… it more of the same. There seems to be a persona that people on the south side of Atlanta will not shop in certain stores therefore they will not come.

I don’t think it’s a persona of the people on the southside per-se, but more of basic business acumen.

Fayette County doesn’t have the population density of the northside suburbs, nor is it easily accessible to an interstate. High traffic areas are desirable to any business.

Also look at recent operations that were here but failed: Hi Fi Buys, Seasonal Concepts (I think that was the name) in the Pavilion, etc. Some marketing research companies will indicate some businesses to stay away based on that alone.

That’s not to say I’m looking forward to another mattress store. But I guess something needs to fill the void now that Southern Mattress is closing.

Like everything else, it’s give and take. I live here for less congestion and development. Although that indeed is changing.
