At the corner of Uh-Oh and Oh-No

I’m going to get right to the point with this blog. It has to do with dangerous intersections in Fayetteville, Peachtree City and intersections outside those city limits.

Last year, the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) released a traffic crash profile, for the metro Atlanta area, which included Fayette County. The numbers collected were from 2002-2004. This is an excerpt from the agency’s introduction.

“Every year, about 550 people are killed and another 68,000 are injured on roads in the 18 counties around metro Atlanta. Another 140,000 crashes result only in damage to vehicles. The cost to society, in terms of medical bills, lost productivity and congestion delay, caused by all these crashes is staggering, an estimated $4.7 billion annually. It’s also estimated that over 50% of all congestion in the Atlanta region is a direct result of crashes and the ensuing backups they create.” In their study, they listed the top 10 intersections with the most crashes. Number one on the list was the intersection of Ga. 85 and Bernhard Road with 270, located on the south end of Fayetteville.

Next was the intersection of Ga. 54 and Ga. 74 in Peachtree City with 180.

The third was Ga. 85 and Ga. 54 in Fayetteville at 164.

If I could have a vote in the matter, I would put the last one, the Ga. 85 and Ga. 54 intersection, at the top of my list. Whenever I get to that intersection, no matter what lane I’m in, I double and triple check oncoming traffic when the light changes. I do that because inevitably, someone will run the light because they think they can or because they don’t want to wait for the traffic light to cycle through.

I don’t mind admitting that I’ve driven through a few yellow lights, but I never block an intersection because I know how annoying and problematic it can be.

Do you have an intersection you avoid like the plague?

Worst intersections within City of Atlanta limits: Ponce de Leon and Clifton Road OR Ponce de Leon and Briarcliff Rd/Moreland - PLEASE PUT IN SOME TURN LANES!!!

You think things are bad now? Wait until the DOT turns on the traffic-limiting lights on the I85 onramps. If drivers simply understood the concept of leaving a car-length ahead of them, and also, if they understood that onramps are designed to allow vehicles to accellerate to the SAME speed as the interstate traffic and be ready to slide into that car-length gap… I would guess that fewer than 35% of drivers understand these concepts.

The worst intersections are all over Cobb County. Cobb County has THE worst traffic ever!!

Stine, I totally agree. Would like to add one thing though. Slower traffic keep right. I honestly think a lot of people do not know this despite the signs posted.

North Decatur Road at Emory Village!!! I pray every time I step off the curb there. The scary thing is that it is actually better than it used to be!

so more atlantans have been killed by cars than americans were killed by terrorists since 9/11/2001

why no war against cars?

if the feds had poured money into commuter trains / light rail instead of Iraq, America would be safer

instead we continue dying in cars and sending oil money to those who wish to kill us

brilliant

Another to add to stine’s list of concepts - the long-lost “Take Gap Give Gap”. If you’re in the right lane at a ramp and traffic is trying to merge, watch that traffic and either speed up a little to take the gap in front of the merging car closest to you or slow down to give it. If you’re the merging driver do the same (just remember you’re merging and must yield the right-of-way to cars already in the lane).

There used to be “Take Gap Give Gap” signs at every interstate entrance ramp when I was a child but IIRC they were pretty much gone by the time I started driving (34 years ago) or not long after. The modern method, though, appears to be “Up yours, Jack, I do what I want to!” from both sets of drivers.

anywhere that n. druid hills road intersects in the area where it crosses 85. they have the lights so screwed up on that road it’s ridiculous. the minute you get off the interstate, you hit 3 lights, the first of which turns red and backs traffic up across the bridge all the way back to lenox road while the other lights are green w/absolutely no traffic going through them. it’s just a giant bottleneck. the exit ramps on both sides are constantly backed up to where traffic is sitting on the highway at a standstill trying to exit to n. druid hills. and just wait until this stupid Atlantic Station Jr. goes up in the middle of all this.

400N and Windward Parkway. They are doing construction and have a avenue of orange barrels which seem to cause people to slam on their brakes for no reason and cause fender benders almost daily on the exit ramp. You think people would remember to slow down a bit since they drive it everyday. I do and people still ride my @$$ then freak out when traffic stops and they have to swerve not to hit me.

The orange barrels will not jump out and get you. Just drive!

Traffic sucks all over Atlanta, partly because of the sheer number of people who live here and partly because of an inadeqate traffic control system that hasn’t been updated in 50 years. I’m referring to the traffic lights, not the interstates, which is another issue. Useful public transportation is minimal. I live less than five miles from my work, but still have to deal with congested surface streets that are backed up because of traffic lights that are out of synch. I can understand why people want to run lights in this city, you know if you run this one, the next one will be green and you can keep moving. Until this city/state fixes the lights, people will keep running them.

ON Friday my husband and I left Marietta at 3:30 to see our granddaughter in Lawrenceville. TWO HOURS AND THIRTY MINUTES later we arrived. Two stalls, one wreck and drivers waiting till the last minute to get in the I-85 exit lanes created bedlam. Wasted time - wasted gas - what a mess!

400S between Mansell & Holcomb Br Rd. Traffic has to merge left to stay on 400 and merge right to get off at Holcomb Br. This was a really bad idea!!!!!!!!!! Love the DOT :()

I’ve never understood why the City of Atlanta cannot synchronize the traffic lights. Other cities do it. Peachtree Road, Spring Street, West Peachtree, North Ave., Ponce de Leon Ave., etc. are all so screwed up by traffic light madness. I’ve lived here for 25 years and there has been numerous statements from the city about all the traffic lights being computer controlled and synchronized eventually. Was supposed to happen before the 1996 Olympics. I guess they’ve had “other priorities” like Shirley’s latest trip to Switzerland.

Peachtree Rd. and Lenox Rd.! If either road is backed up, the spillover causes a huge jam at the intersection as well. There are so many lights in the stretch of Peachtree from the Lenox intersection to the Piedmont intersection, and each one has the potential to cause a backup. If cars on Peachtree are backed up to the Ritz-Carlton on the corner, no new cars can squeeze in whenever one of the multitude of lights turn green. Hence, I had to sit through 4 or 5 green lights one afternoon before I could turn left onto Peachtree. Argh!

It’s gotten better since then (and when these afternoon thundershowers stop happening every day, I think I’m going to start walking to work. 2 miles each way), but I shudder to imagine how much worse it’ll get when the new high-rise condo buildings are finished. TWO new tall buildings between Lenox and Piedmont. Yikes.

I-285 and 141/Peachtree Industrial Blvd especially after 4pm going North on 141. The lights are so out of synch at that intersection. I am just glad I don’t have to get on 285!

Traffic problems are a direct cause of too much development, and not making developers resonsible for road improvements. On the main street to my neighborhood, they have added 6 new subdivisions. Not one improvement has been made to the roads or the traffic lights. You have to wait approximately 3 to 4 lights to make a left onto Highway 20 coming off Sycamore in Buford. Let’s make the developers pay for road improvements and make them contibute to new schools also. I just returned from Seattle, and they have the best bus system inside city limits. The fairs are free every day from 7 a.m to 7 p.m. You can hop on any bus, and it will take you where you need to be. MARTA people should make a trip out there and see for themselves how public transit really works. However, Seattle is pedistrian friendly, unlike Atlanta, and we walked all over the place.

The biggest problems occur at the intersection of the DOT, our money, and the monopoly authority to design and maintain the roads.

Privatization of the roads is, has been, and always will be the best idea. It has been way too long since this country has seen how well this works.

Anyone in Kennesaw knows the worst intersection is at Barrett Pkwy and Cobb Place. The light to turn onto Barrett from Cobb lasts literally maybe 10 seconds and allows 3 cars to get through and to top it off I-75 merges right next to it so people constantly run the light and are trying to get over all at the same time. And god forbid trying to turn left in front of On the Border…youll become a skeleton before you have an opening to go…horrible

Anywhere in Duluth on Peachtree Industrial Blvd, especially at Pleasanthill Blvd. Traffic flows on Pleasanthill for close to two minutes, and Peachtree Industrial gets 30 seconds. Duluth needs to time their lights on Peachtree Ind. If and when you get through the intersection at GA120, then you have to stop at River Green, then you get stopped at the Kroger Shopping center at Pleasanthill, then you get stopped at Howell Ferry and then again at North Berkeley Lake. If you can get through all lights without stopping, you are in luck or driving very early in the a.m.

Ga 400 and Abernathy Road (Dunwoody) When you get off the exit and want to take a left on Peachtree Dunwoody Road. You have to cross three lanes of oncoming traffic within 1/8 of a mile. It is nearly impossible, but I have to brave the intersection every weekday.

For the south side, which seems to be lacking in representation here, I nominate the intersection of Cleveland Ave. and Metropolitan Pkwy. If you are heading west or east on Cleveland, you have a blind hill, combined with the Metropolitan Avenue River that runs into the intersection due to a 7-yr. hydrant water leak, this makes it particularly tricky during the winter months.

Also, all of the N. Central Ave. intersections in Hapeville, most notably the intersection of N. Central and Virginia Avenue, you have train crossings, a variety of stop signs in lieu of stop lights and it’s a disaster waiting to happen. DOT will come out once someone is killed, I’m sure.

when you are on a bicycle, the worst intersections are when a right turn lane (or two or three) spring up, putting your straight bound butt 20 feet out from the edge of the roadway with cars buzzing by on the left AND right acting like they are better than you and thinking they have more right to the road due to the inefficient and polluting mode of travel they selected for themselves

the more inefficient and polluting a road user is, the lower their priority should be!!!

Apparently no one read my blog yesterday. There was at least 1 accident yesterday at 400N and Windward, the sight of which caused the 2 cars in front of me to nearly collide into themselves and into the accident. The people on the side of the road pee’d in their pants. It was nothing but screeching tires and 2 cars swerving out of control directly at them. Luckily I was far back enough not to get sucked into the mess.

The problem isn’t with intersections. It has to do with volume. All states need to step up their driving requirements, and make it much tougher for people to obtain a license. Having a higher standard would prevent bad drivers from being on the road in the first place. Also, it would force more people to use other means of transportation. Where does it say that everyone has a RIGHT to drive a car?

316 west to 85 south is known as “Graceland” for Athens residents because its only by the grace of God you make it through that merge alive, especially since the idoit slow drivers are doing 40 flippin’ mph in the only lane we can merge to. And I agree it is long past due for both lanes on the 316 ramp to 85 south re-open. At least open both lanes on the weekend since DOT crews don’t ever work Sat or Sun.

The intersection of Peachtree Parkway and McIntosh Trail/Kelly Drive in Peachtree City…you should watch constantly while crossing Peachtree Parkway by car or golf cart. The stop sign seems to be invisible to many.

I agree with the folks that plead for the slower traffic to keep right, but if I’m in the left lane doing well over the speed limit and you’re tailgateing me because you want to go 100 mph., I’m not moving right for anybody! ….go around.

By ED

August 1, 2007 3:06 PM | Link to this

Why, “King Fish?” It is more dangerous for everybody on the road for them to have to pass you on the right. Please do the right thing and reserve the left lane for passing. You are accomplishing nothing good by trying to impede traffic in the left lane, and you are making it more dangerous when the speeders have to go around you in the lane to the right. You are also making yourself a target for some psycho who has finally had enough of childish antics like yours. You should not be in the left lane at all unless you are passing somebody.
