I like living in Fayetteville. Do you?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In the 10 years we’ve lived in Fayetteville, I have to say this town, for me, has been the nearly perfect marriage of subdivision living (which I had never experienced before), shopping and comfortable living.
Before we moved here I did my research trying to find out home prices, amenities, school info, crime stats, and places to worship.
As far as I could tell at that point, Fayetteville seemed to have everything I wanted and needed to live easily in a suburban setting.
Now, while my children have grown and the requirements aren’t the same as they were 10 years ago, I still like living here.
And simply put, Fayetteville met and actually still meets my expectations. There are more places to shop and there are more restaurants for dining.
Yes, I know the traffic has worsened in recent years, but honestly, it certainly is bearable compared to other places like in Cobb or Gwinnett County, don’t you think? So I guess you can tell by this blog that Fayetteville is still very much working for me. What about you?
For however long you have lived here, has Fayetteville met your expectations? If it hasn’t please explain.

I have lived in Fayetteville since 1988. I still remember when we had a two lane road, one traffic light and the only grocery store we had was Kroger. I could walk anywhere I wanted to. I didn’t have to worry about getting mugged, we had the best restaurants and Fayetteville had the best reputation. Now fast forward to 2007 and Fayetteville has turned into Riverdale. Ever since the Pavilion was built the quality of life in Fayetteville has gone away. It takes me 10 minutes to turn out my neighborhood, there are now “suspect” people walking around everywhere and it’s not safe to take your kids out anywhere. Fayetteville has just turned pure ghetto. There are so many foreclosures in my neighborhood that it’s not even funny anymore. If we can get the city to stop building all these buildings and cutting down the trees maybe we can get some quality of life back. Until that happens I am moving on…

Couldn’t agree with you more, Yeahright. It’s been on my mind so much lately. The Pavillion is horrible - it’s a nasty mess and the stores are starting to look like something you would expect to see in Riverdale, not Fayetteville. It’s sad to say but I am hoping to be in PTC by this time next year if my house sells quickly. There are still some really beautiful areas of Fayetteville to live but what’s the use in living in such nice areas when your shopping and dining choices are so awful?

I have lived in Fayetteville for the last 4 years and am loving every minute of it. Shopping, the daycare center and schools are in close proximity from where I live. I love the subdivision where I live as well as the people.

I began my life in Fayetteville in the mid 60’s. Went through the school system(s) there - Fayette, Tyrone, Peachtree City. Enjoyed the country life (as it was called). A few horses, lots of land, good stuff. Like every other city in America that is loved and cherished - Fayette grew and grew and grew. Our planners did not plan well - leaving us to wonder if they had planned at all for their own children. Suddenly, there was just too much of everything in the same county. Competition is great - but to a degree. When you have more than one of the same thing in the same county - it’s more than enough. I returned there briefly after college and was sad to see the changes did not allow for horses on the same patch of land that I once cherished. Hwy 54 became a NASCAR commercial - except it wasn’t a good one - as many friends and neighbors lost their lives and loved ones to car accidents on that road. Too much of something brings in the negative and I moved away to Cobb County. Surprisingly enough the patch of world I now live in is not as busy or challenged by growth as Fayette. I’m sure it will come there too - but hopefully I’ll be retired to somewhere else by then. I suggest to those that can and care about Fayette now to hold your city officials, planners, etc., etc accountable for what is happening there. It’s not possible to reverse what has happened in terms of growth - but some of it can be cleaned up so that the people who care about the town/county and who want to contribute to its success will be the ones to call it home. The rest will see it as an invitation to go somewhere else. Be a part of what is good, make it better - or leave…that’s my motto.

I am looking to but some land in the near future in Fayette county, so I can build a house with some acres. Which is the best city in Fayette to start my search?

The amount of foreclosures in Fayette County is very concerning to me. Why are these people losing their homes? Did they get easy loans from questionable lenders and now their balloon payments are due and they are bailing? This is not the Fayette County from years past. Not sure if this problem can be fixed and it’s very, very troubling because Fayette County, as a whole, is a great place to live. I don’t want to see all my friends leave and it seems that’s what they are doing.

I left for college in the early ’80s and never came back, living first in So. Ga., and now Panama City FL. The same development mindset exists here also, “Sell out and give the money to the grandkids.” Then LLCs grab properties and sell or rent them to anyone and anything, or bail out and leave half finished condo canyons, or a string of forclosures. About the ‘grandkids’ mentality; as you have observed- there’s nothing left for them. They burn throught the money and end up in trouble, or go buy a place in a gated community somewhere and shrivel up of ennui. No sense of purpose or connection- trash this area and move on. That’s what’s being explored at www.southsideatlantamemories.typepad.com . Please listen to ‘lovethesouth’ and BVI and do what you can to help your neighborhood be its best. Who would have ever thought Kirkwood or East Point would come back?

I have to agree with yeahright and Elizabeth. I’m closer to Fayetteville than PTC or Newnan, but I choose going to either of those cities before I ever go to F-Ville. My husband and I have been in the area for just over a year and after a few months of traveling to the Pavillion for shopping and such, we stopped going because of the increasing crimes and the “ghetto” atmosphere. We now have an infant and I do not feel safe taking her with me to Fayetteville. That is sad to say because it has the potential to be such a nice city, but I’m not buying it right now.
interested - I recommend Tyrone. You have the opportunity to have a little more land and not be right on top of your neighbors, you have a grocery store and a few local eating establishments, but you are also less than 10 minutes from PTC, which in my preference has every amenity that you could want in a very safe environment for your family. Good luck and join us in Fayette, just not Fayetteville.

I’ve lived in Fayette since 1991 and I say the quality of life is the same now as it was back then. I love living there so much. I think a lot of people hate Fayette County, for the values we have and nice the county just look period. The reason why I say that is because on your other blogs, somebody always have to say “Fayette County is next Clayton County.” I know our elected officals have learned from the mistakes Clayton has made and they are NOT going to let those same mistakes happen here. But overall, I love Fayette County just as much as you do Ms. Abby.

I agree, 100% that life is good in Fayetteville. However the traffic has gotten worse in the 8+ years that I’ve lived here. But certainly the traffic in other areas of Atlanta and the world (like Rome) have become unbearable. Se la ve.
