Why move to PTC? Students tell you why
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
As part of a lesson on the local community, the third-grade class at Peachtree City Elementary School recently identified 100 reasons for people to move to Peachtree City.
The class, led by teacher Roderick Bailey, spent two months researching the history and culture of the city to come up with a list.
While some of the third-graders’ reasons are subjective — “Peachtree City has beautiful scenery” — most are based on historical facts—“Peachtree City is a certified City of Ethics.” And while the students were a little off on a few facts — such as the number of middle and high schools in Peachtree City (it’s technically 1 of each) and when the city will celebrate its 50th anniversary (2009) — the basic premise of the exercise seems to be a good one. I think it’s important for children to know about their community and what makes it unique so that they might take pride in its preservation.
“As they worked on the project, I heard ‘I didn’t know that’ a lot,” Bailey said. “They learned that every city has something to offer, but Peachtree City is not like most cities.”
Check out the list at www.pces.org. Do you agree with the students’ assessment? What would top your list as reasons to move to Peachtree City?
