What do you miss most about your hometown?

I would be unfaithful to my roots if I were to write about anything today without acknowledging that it’s Mardi Gras Day.

If you grew up in New Orleans, as my husband and I both did, you know that Mardi Gras is one of those truly cultural events that never leave you, no matter what city you presently call home. Throughout the day, I’ll be mentally transporting myself to the crowds on St. Charles Avenue, where families are enjoying a day of costumes, parades, music, dancing and, of course, great food.

Since we moved to Peachtree City, my husband and I have tried to recapture our fond memories of Mardi Gras by sharing king cakes with our children’s schools and Scout groups, tossing dozens of beads to neighborhood families and even hosting parties with Cajun and Creole fare. Yet nothing beats being there.

Since Peachtree City is a suburb of the cultural melting pot known as Metro Atlanta, it got me thinking that there might be special days and holidays when many of you feel like my family does today. You long for an annual tradition or celebration that was unique to your hometown. Or maybe you just miss a particular food or dish that can’t be found here.

Where are you from and what brought you to Peachtree City? What do you miss most about your hometown?

4th Of July golf cart parade. That is Peachtree Cities tradition. Though laetly it has become more of a parade with the local golf carts stuck at the end. In the old days it was the local people on thier golf carts that was the focus of the parade. They should go back to that more and make the parade more of a local event for local participation. If not the tradition will be gone. May already be gone. Maybe they could spread the local golf carts through out the parade instead of just throwing most of them together at the end.

Charleston, S.C., is my adopted hometown & I miss the Spoleto Festival , which is gearing up now. Because I was a local, I took in a lot of Piccolo Spoleto events, the less-expensive performances, many held outside. The whole pennisula was a 2-week culture fest.

I miss my hometown…Riverdale, GA. Although it has now become a victim of urban blight, in my childhood it used to be a sleepy little suburb with a nice touch of country. The streets were safe and the schools were good. The town shut down after 9 or so…except at the local Krystal where the high school kids would hang out on Friday nights. There used to be some woods near our neighborhood where we’d play as kids/teens. These woods seemed almost primeval…with old-growth trees and ferns growing along the hillside. We’d end up at a place a creek known as “Slippery Rock” and just sit and chill out on the rocks.
