OK with Dunwoody skate park?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Paul Lowry is among those who aren’t happy that Brook Run Skate Park is opening near his Dunwoody home.
“The reason I moved here was because of the quiet and the trees,” Lowry told a reporter recently. “That (skate park) needs to be in a commercial area.” Stadium-type lights and loud speakers are installed in the park, which will be open until 10:30 in the summer.
But others are pleased that the park is opening.
What’s your opinion?

Jones is a loser. He forced this “park” on the local community against its wishes with late night, 7 day a week operation. He got his handpicked Parks Dept. employees to force this major, Pro type Skate Park, into a local neighborhood that will not be able to handle the traffic, the noise, or the nighttime operation. Just more evidence of why Jones must go and why we need our own local city to control operation of parks, police, and many other things.

Jones and his Parks Dept. CUT DOWN FIVE ACRES OF TREES to put this Pro Skate Park into the neighborhood. No one wanted any trees cut down. We wouldn’t want a developer to do it, but our own CEO and County Parks did it. That’s why ne need change. We need local people in charge of their own neighborhood. Jones runs for Senate on greenspace - well here’s an example of how he does greenspace in the middle of a quiet tree lined neighborhood.

How soon till the first lawsuit is filed because someone’s “precious, darling” thug wannabe falls and breaks something?
I hope the DeKalb PD is planning on keeping an officer stationed at the park 24/7. It’s will definitely cut down on response times to local crimes that will surely increase.

You should be thankful there’s a place for skateboarders to go and have fun (not to mention EXERCISE). Skateboarding can cause all sorts of damage to property. I know this from first hand experience. If no skateparks exist, everything that is paved becomes a skatepark by default, particularly places that are impossible to supervise and usually dangerous.
I agree that the loudspeakers are over the top, though. There should probably be a music curfew or decibel restrictions so the neighbors can get some peace and quiet. Besides, Skateboarders tend to have crappy taste in music. Always have. (Again, I speak from first hand experience.)

Additionally, look at the photos in the article. ALL the kids are wearing pads and helmets. Skateboarders NEVER wear protective gear when they are skating on the streets, parking lots and loading docks behind warehouses. Your kids are much, much safer using this facility than they are if they have to scout out skate spots on their own.

My son skateboards and while he is my darling, he certainly isn’t a “thug wannabe”.
Your attitude is outdated and prejudiced against a sport that is very mainstream now-a-days.
I suppose a football field wouldn’t have raised so many objections. But then again, that would’ve made all the dog owners very uncomfortable ;)

More reasons why Dunwoody and Tucker need to become cities.

All you naysayers are right. Why should kids be allowed to be at a skateboard park getting aerobic exercise until 10:30pm when they could be at home sitting on the couch watching TV or playing video games and eating bags of Doritos and chasing it with sugary sodas.
When I was 15 there was a local skateboard park and I’d go out there and skateboard for hours and hours. Great exercise and a great way for kids to keep in shape. At 41 I wish I still had pads and helmet, I might actually join them.

It is completely amzing what gets communites crazy these days. A recreation area where kids can skate is an outrage to you people? Relax people. Understand that this culture has changed since when I was a young pro with my first contract. No longer are these kids social outcasts. This is big business and now has most kids willing to committ to this sport just as the they do for soccer, baseball and basketball. Embrace and keep open.

I used to live on E. Kings Point Circle in Dunwoody North, and all I have to say is that my Alpharetta neighborhood looks better every day.

Well I graduated from Marist in 1978, not far at all from Brook Run. I wish the park was there 29 years ago, but I’m so glad that it’s there now. I had a great time in the pool Sunday and am looking forward to many many days of fun at what is a top of the line skatepark. Way to go Vernon. I’d say it’s the only thing he has done for our county that he can be proud of. I hope the community is able to look at what IS happening at the park and not let their prejudice linger for too long.
PS if anyone has a pool in their backyard that they want drained, I would entertain skating at your house rather than Brook Run.

Brook Run used to house a large number of disabled DeKalb citizens. Does anyone know where they have gone and how they are fairing? I can’t help but think that the ultimate losers in this were the disabled people who were displaced by a skate park and a dog park.

The skate park is a waste of taxpayer money as it appeals to a limited number of citizens. More productive use of the land would have been to leave it as a park for walking and picnics.

how is this park a wasteof taxpayer money?and i dont see hundreds of kids(and adults) going to a park for walking and picnics every day and besides, we already have things like that, one of the many lakes arround here serve just fine for your purpose and the point is to appeal to improve our community in more ways because the only other skatepark i can think of arround this area is pickneyville and how many people want to send thier children to a park surrounded by drugs and no suppervision at all, anyways, i think this is a great improvement

I am so sick and tired of reading about the skate park and how awful our neighborhood is by having this park in our community. Just because you or your child doesn’t own a skateboard or enjoy watching this sport doesn’t mean the rest of us don’t enjoy watching. It is a sport and growing every day. Get over it Dunwoody the skate park is here to stay!!!

Ok let me get this straight…The dog park might have displaced disabled residents???Do you even know where in the park the dog area is? Its at the very end.Its also located in a heavily wooded”gulch” with no water available. I was looking at bringing my chainsaw to their dog”park” clean up last weekend and really help them “clean up” hehe
