In favor of PATH trails through neighborhoods?

Are PATH trails through neighborhoods good idea?
Some people love the trails that provide access through neighborhoods for running, walking and biking. Others oppose trails running along their property, citing safety concerns and the loss of green space.
Recent trails built along Tanyard Creek in Buckhead were both praised and panned.
What do you think? Are trails through intown neighborhoods a good idea? Bad idea? Please explain.
