County budget dispute: What’s the problem?

DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones on Wednesday kept alive a nasty power struggle with the County Commission by vetoing a series of budget amendments approved by the board a day earlier.
TThe amendments would have cut $2.1 million from police spending to eliminate 50 new police positions, nip 1.8 percent from most departments to save $7.8 million, and put more than $25 million for capital improvements under commission control instead of the CEO.
Four commissioners had voted for the amendments.
Jones peppered his veto announcement with words like “hypocrite, stupid, narrow-minded and ill conceived.”
Commissioner Burrell Ellis said the board was trying to act in the best interests of the county.
